I think feeling is what matters most when it comes to music, I know "soul" is a cliche at this point but Ian wrote and sang purely from the heart, his lyrics, his vocals, his dancing, it was all the culmination of his lived experiences and I think that is why it works. Human beings evolved to pick up on subtle social clues in language and body and I think someone that legitimately is putting pure emotion into what they are doing, people naturally feel it. Obviously you can't be off key and singing like a seal but I think Ian is the perfect example of soul goes a long way.

JD’s catalogue, while not voluminous, doesn’t contain a single duff track. “Transmission” is definitely one of the greatest post-punk tracks. Then there are phenomenal JD songs such as “No Love Lost”, “Shadowplay”, “Disorder”, “Dead Souls”, “Digital” etc. I know “Love Will Tear Us Apart” gets all the press (and it is a wonderful song). Ian Curtis was a huge fan of The Doors and you can definitely hear Jim Morrison’s vocal influence on Ian. And while Bauhaus often gets credited as starting the Goth genre, JD probably deserve at least a co-credit in that regard.

I was living in NYC at the time, so you'd find more people at a gig, but you'd never hear these groups on any radio station besides a college station or a non-commercial FM station. I went to shows by the Fall & Gang of Four, Flipper or Bad Brains and a few other groups, and they were played in clubs, and the club would be packed for these bands, but if there were 500 people there, they were probably all of the 500 people in NYC who had ever heard of them. These groups might have been popular in the UK, but were pretty obscure over here. The biggest name band I got to see was the Clash when they played at the Palladium on 14th Street, which could actually fit a couple of thousand people. It caused a lot of tension between the London and Manchester scenes as some of the guys from This Heat and some of the London bands took Gen's side as when Gen tried to contact people in Manchester the response they got was "he's just being dramatic" when he tried to get people to go and check on Ian.

Years down the line Gen went on to release I C Waters with PTV - in tribute to Ian Curtis. People often overlook how young all members of JD were. Unfortunately, they were young and trying to deal with all sorts of new pressures. This was a group of young lads. They were enjoying the success that was breaking through but that also is a pressure - to do more gigs etc. They weren't worldly wise and they were in the moment - they didn't have the benefit of hindsight to dissect lyrics and think whether there was any underlying message. I can fully imagine Gen trying to convey his worry over Ian and being told he was just being dramatic - that's exactly how most would react at that time.
@lewisb853 жыл бұрын
@@simonparker7066 The other thing as well is that Gen was a little bit older and had been round the block a few times as far as coming from Manchester originally but having lived in London, Hull and a few other places due to education and also due to his fathers work. it's almost like gen could see what was going on more than the others due to his little bit more worldly wiseness, apparently he told curtis about if he didn't like being in a band he could just stop doing the band etc, but curtis would have seen that as him letting everybody down.

When I hear stories like this, it really makes me sad. As a nurse, I feel like this man's pressures and precarious mental and physical situation should have been recognized. Hindsight is 20/20 as they say, but this death seems preventable. Being in a touring band was not a good professional fit for this person. Nowadays a creative individual like Curtis could probably have put his music out without such a risk to his health and welfare. When you're 23, hanging around with other 23 year olds, you just don't have the life experience to put this situation in order. I hope that he enjoys whatever comes after this life.

Often the brightest lights are brief and spectacular. I was 17 0r 18 when I saw the video for "Love will Tear Us Apart" here in Canada. I remember just being mesmerized by the doors and their sound. Had no idea who Joy Division was but that song made me into a fan. Even now in my 50s, those 2 records always put me into a special place whenever i listen to them. Just beautiful.

Ian Curtis was so unbelievably talented. I get goosebumps every time I hear Joy Division play

There is a fantastic Joy Division live CD called "Les Baines Douches" The CD's first 9 tracks were recorded for French radio and have fantastic sound. Those live songs are powerful and the live Joy Division is unlike the band on their studio albums. If you can find it, Bono spoke of recording U2's debut album "Boy" down the hall from Joy Division when they were recording "Closer."

Gosh! I was in Paris with some friends that night. We had to choose between two gigs: Joy D at the Bains Douches or XTC at the Bataclan. We went to XTC, but Andy Partridge was sick and the show was shitty. Later, I listened to the Bains Douches CD: the best JD's live recording by far. I will regret my choice for the rest of my life.

sad part of this story is it shows "specialists" then much like now don't know what the hell they're doing and just want to dope you up. i know from experience.
@taffy53374 жыл бұрын
Well I sympathise with people with conditions like epilepsy but I got call you out for the specialist don't know what they are doing, it is a unfair line. If you said the research or medical science has got gaps in its knowledge that is a accurate statement. I admit my bias, I have family members were and are nurses who from my experience are trained within framework of the knowledge we have in medical science. Anyway I do hope whatever you are suffering from, you one day find it easier or better still there is a cure for it.
@RogueBoyScout4 жыл бұрын
yeah, nah. You had a bad experience, my sympathies. But I have seen so much lives transformed by "specialists" for the better ( As a "consumer" LOL). Plus I have found that when it comes to these things, it's usually the patient thinking they know better that has a way more detrimental effect. But yeah, let's put it all on the "specialists",. Not the drug use, party lifestyle, the shitty house life, ect ect.. It's always the doctor's fault... (My comments are a generalisation. I wasn't hanging around Ian Curtis to give a proper insight into his story, but let's be real here. He didn't die from Epilepsy. JS)

They were the worst possible seizures too, what's called Grand Mal seizures. It's a fucked up coincidence too because when he was working his desk job helping people with health problems find jobs, one of the women he was helping and was friends with ended up having a seizure in public and passed away as a result. That's what he wrote the song "She's Lost Control" about.

Quite a few errors on this video. Love Will Tear Us Apart doesn't appear on Closer. Ian wasn't childhood friends with Peter and Bernard, but they did know of each other from the local music scene. Ideal For Living was an EP, not an album. Alan Erasmus didn't even get a mention? Still, thanks for the video.

The amount of money they were living off of does get converted to approximately $450 in today's value. Still extremely rough, but not as bad as it could have been. Likely, that was one of the few nice things in his head space. They were finally on their way, able to quit the job he hated. Depression grabs at a person without rhyme or reason. Devastating. Absolutely devastating.
