Kurt and Dave's relationship had strains, but that's common in any relationship where two people care about each other. People fight, but it doesn't mean they don't love each other. It's the opposite. In an interview, Dave was asked what one item he would save from his house if it caught fire. He said a letter Kurt wrote to him in 1992. "Probably this letter I got from Kurt in 1992. That sounds terribly melodramatic, but it’s true. I lose everything: passports, wallets, car keys, credit cards, but that letter is absolutely irreplaceable. He wrote it to me when everything was going nuts. We were all living in different places- he was in Los Angeles, I was in Virginia and Krist was in Seattle- and some decisions were being made without me. I got really bummed out and Kurt sent me this letter about my role and stature in the band. It was all, ‘I love you like a brother.’ It was just before we did ‘In Utero’ and it said, ‘I can’t wait to get back in the studio and make a record so we can whittle ourselves back down to a comfortable level,’ Which of course never really happened.” Even through ups and downs, I know they cared for each other.
@nopulpapple991

Yeah, they were co-workers. Kurt's description of Dave just sounds like frustrations I might have sometimes with the people I work with - just venting. Like Kurt, I would never directly bring it up and it doesn't mean anything. It was a very hard working band and Dave was just learning how to hang.

@@nopulpapple991 I agree. I also think that they Kurt really did care about Dave. But I also don't think anyone should judge their relationship besides the people that actually knew them. But to me, from watching interviews, they did really like each other.

When Nirvana played in Belfast, N.Ireland back in the early 90s, my brother's friend was helping his disabled brother into the Nirvana concert as they didn't have proper disabled access at that time. My brother waited outside with his friend's dog. The security guards were prejudiced, and didn't like that my brother and his friend were punk rockers. They decided that my brother's friend had stayed inside too long (he wanted to check out the start of the gig) and the security came in, dragged him out and beat him. Dave Grohl and Krist were outside having a smoke, and they saw this happen. They brought my brother, his friend, and their dog backstage, and Courtney Love ended up looking after the dog while they enjoyed the concert. My brother came home and bragged about it to me, because he knew what a massive Nirvana fan I was! Mean! He said that Dave and Krist were really nice guys, but that Kurt wasn't that friendly (I think he was suffering from withdrawal and had a 'sore stomach'). I still have the 'sell the kids for food tour' all access pass from that concert. Apparently Courtney Love really liked my brother's friend's wooly jumper, which he had bought for a few quid in a thrift store in Belfast. She bought it from him for £60 to give to Kurt. It was a red and black striped wooly jumper. You know the one.

Dave spends a good chunk of the year at his bungalow at 4 Seasons, Hawaii island - which is the island I live on. Whenever he needs gear, he usually comes into my music shop. He's always been really, really nice to us. The first time he came in, I said "Hey! I know you! You're that judge from American Idol!" and he laughed his ass off. One time he even signed my Kurt Cobain signature Jaguar guitar for me. ..and I randomly found out later that he usually has a "no autographs" policy due to e-Bay sellers. He didn't have any attitude whatsoever. He just commented on how beautiful the guitar was. I obviously don't actually know the guy, but in my personal experience, he's a really nice, down to earth dude. (Unless you're unvaxxed, apparently. Lmao)

Not a fan of FF myself but all I've ever seen from Grohl is a man that has gentleman class and is very friendly and grounded. All bands fall out, that's the world they're in and choose to be in. Imagine touring for months on and off stage, partying, lack of sleep, missing your kids and being homesick etc and gotta put up with 3 or more other guys feeling the same way LOL. Ultimate tension.

@@JackMcLeodJr the closest I've came to that was numerous deployments while in the army. You get no sleep, hardly. You're constantly having to readjust your daily mission agenda and objectives, for both of those dynamics each change from moment to moment making the battlefield in an even greater state of flux than what it is by its own nature alone. You see the same guys day in, day out... and some of them you suddenly know that you will never see them again after being dazed by a bright flash and a magnitude of sudden energy that knocks you into the next week... and once you come to your senses, you realize that some of your guys are dead So now everyone has to pull up their slack, despite being down 3 or more men.... you get the idea. I'm so glad I left that shit when I did. Everyone I was with on those deployments... we don't speak to each other. But beginning in basic training, they love to pump everyone's heads up bY talking about the "inseparable indivisible brotherhood" of the infantry, and how you will always benin contact with each other... But the truth is that the moment you leave the unit and go elsewhere... you're quickly forgotten about, despite how many years you had spent with that particular company and battalion. And as the years pass... you realize that each of you just randomly happened to work together and were forced to get along with each other. The ones who were your "people", perhaps, they despised you deep in their subconscious... but because of brainwashing techniques, you all got along really well

~~ except if you're a junkie - there have been plenty of successful musicians who mostly - if not completely - avoided drugs - even if they never made a big public thing of their disdain for it. Frank Zappa was known to not put up with it at all. Roger Daltrey once flushed a bunch of Keith Moon's dope down the toilet and was nearly fired from the Who for it - but Cobain was the primary songwriter in Nirvana - so he could not really be fired from that band ..

I eventually built up the courage to approach him and ask him for a picture, and he said “no sorry”. I was mortified and embarrassed, but I just told him ok sorry, just wanted to say you’re the reason I play drums and I’m one of the biggest Nirvana fans, and he said thank you and shook my hand. I get where you are coming from but at the same point you gotta realize that he probably gets photo requests from people ALL THE TIME. So let's say you have 15+ random people a day ask for a photo with a side bit of small chat....All that adds up in a day/week. I have met some professional musicians and the trick is to NOT ASK for a photo. You introduce yourself, extend for a handshake, and say what you want to say real quick and let them go on their way. I have had musicians ask ME if I want a photo just because I could tell they appreciated that I had respect for their time and didn't draw unwanted attention to them. Sometimes you don't get that photo but that's okay....If you get to say "Thanks for being an inspiration...Keep on rocking!" and a handshake, that's still an awesome memory to have. :)

So for a few years (96-2000) I worked at a bar with one of his best friends from high school. She, Jennifer, used to tease me about how much I looked like Dave (long brown hair and brown eyes) so she’d make us sit next to each other every time he came in. (He always came in to visit when he was in town or passing through.) I played for her wedding reception. Was really fun and cool because they paid a rancher to basically have a 2 day wedding reception that was like a festival. (Rural Northern California) He would come in, usually with Taylor and a “road manager” Jimmy.. I think that title was an inside joke because I never saw his name anywhere with that credit but who knows. My point is we used to get zooted. Close the bar early , drink (a lot) and do lines right at the bar for hours. To me when I hear him or someone say he didn’t do drugs what he was really saying is he wasn’t an addict and he never was into h or downers in general. Dave was always telling war stories about the antics the foo fighters got up to on the road and rarely ever talked about nirvana and I didn’t ask. He told this story about how Kurt went with Dave to his mom’s house in Virginia and Kurt shot up in her bathroom and nodded out in there and really embarrassed Dave. He’s a good person, especially for being a “rock star” but we are all flawed. Kurt’s death hurt him and Courtney only made things worse by being an attention seeking, clout chaser parasite.

He is a top-flight drummer. He knows the songs, he is responsible, he doesn't do drugs, and he draws attention. He's an obvious choice. At the end, experienced bands are like any other employer. They want someone reliable who they know will get the job done properly. Dave always does. His reputation as a professional performer is impeccable. Guys like Sterling Campbell and Kenny Aronoff are the same way. They always get the calls, not because they're the best drummers around, but because they are the most reliable.

He’s still the nicest guy in rock, because he should’ve fired the first drummer he hired for the Foo Fighters if he wasn’t happy with his performance in the studio but the fact that he kept the guy on two tracks and was willing to tour with the guy is proof he was being nicer than most people would in his position. Cobain was in his death spiral, and it wasn’t really Grohl’s fault he was pushing people away and alienating people who didn’t do drugs. Taylor Hawkins, same as Cobain with the way he was spiraling out of control and when he OD’d Grohl’s friendship was also a factor in bringing him back from the brink of death and keeping clean for most of the time he was alive. Their bromance went on to become legendary after that near death experience. The only real feuds he had were with Courtney Love, which I don’t even count because that woman pisses off everyone at some point and is a polarizing figure. She didn’t just inspire songs from Grohl either, because NIN recorded Starfuckers Inc. and then there’s Tori Amos Professional Widow, STP Too Cool Queenie, Primus Coattails Of A Dead Man, and several by Smashing Pumpkins-none of which were positive. So, that was a case of Courtney being Courtney. Noel and Liam Gallagher are notorious dickheads who talk shit and get into fights with people who just like their music and want them to be a band, but those two are famously the worst when it comes to their egos and attitude when it comes to their feuding and I think Noel perceived Grohl as taking his brother’s side and disrespecting his current project, so I see why he would have gone off on him for something as innocuous as trying to mend his relationship with his sibling that he knows brought them the fame despite him writing the songs, because his brother was the front man and lead singer and he hated doing all the work and getting 50% of the credit. I wouldn’t consider this a real beef, because it’s Noel being Noel and he was friends with Liam likely as a result of that little squabble, and because Liam liked Hawkins’ solo record with Range Rover Bitch-hence the reason he played the recent tribute show. Ian Astbury is the only one of these that is 100% because Grohl acted like a dickhead for no reason, and then he made up for it the first chance he had so at least he’s a decent guy who knows when he fucked up. I chalk that one up to Dave being undiagnosed with ADHD and having a microphone in his face more than is healthy for any normal person, because anyone with ADHD knows that on a long enough span of time, you are going to say some shit on impulse that you don’t mean that is probably offensive to at least one person. I give him respect for not burning more bridges, because I’ve probably burned more running my own ADHD mouth and I don’t happen to be one of the biggest rock stars of all time who does interviews that are seen around the world. That said, has anybody ever taken a listen to that album or seen that tour that could speak to whether or not Grohl was throwing out valid criticism or not? I’m sure that by that point in their career they were going at things a lot harder and doing more than they had before they as well established because they finally had some money behind them. Dave being a punk rocker and likely fan of their earlier work probably wasn’t too far off in his assessment. He shouldn’t have said it in an interview because that would likely influence a lot of other people who hadn’t heard them or their new album, and that’s why you don’t shit talk other people publicly, but I’m sure there are fans of The Cult who agreed. So, not too bad if you ask me because there are guys like Marilyn Manson or other more polarizing figures in rock history that burned way more bridges than Dave Grohl, and if that’s your best list you can come up with having been in the business over 30 years-I’d say he’s doing alright.

Glad you had the guts to put some truth out there on Dave Grohl. Can't understand how people think he has talent. His songs are mediocre at best. I think most of his fans are not GenX like me who are contemporaries with musicians like Cobain or Vedder et al. I find a lot of his fans were 9 and 10 when Nirvana and Grunge were being played. For some reason this is their way to connect with that time that is now over. Dude speaks at Lemmy's funeral?? WTF is that? Tom Petty wants him to be his drummer after subbing in for him at SNL. Really Tom? You need a hard rock drummer for your easy going middle of the road music. Cobain was not happy with Grohl one single bit. He hired him to do some extra guitar work, singing and songwriting and he did nothing. He was intimidated by Kurt and he would bring up a song in the studio, Cobain would say "Ok, let me work on it a bit" then Grohl would say "Nah, nah just forget it". Kurt was fed up by this and he even stated it in an interview when someone accused him of dominating the band creatively and he talked about the "other guys" not pulling their weight. The final fuck up the ass for me was the Grohl signature Gibson guitar. So, Gibson knew that Cobain was married to Fender so they had to do something fast. So they copied the Trini Lopez signature 335 and call it the Dave Grohl signature guitar and sell it for......$18000? After all, many rhythm guitarists are known for their strumming patterns. And get this, it has diamond cutouts instead of F holes. If your band is called Foo Fighters wouldn't it make sense to have the two F holes? I guess if you have more money than brains and talent then this guitar is for you! Lastly, I'd like to say that as a young 22 year old that heard Nevermind and Straight outta Compton for the first time it was an absolute game changer as far as OUR generations music went. The only boomer rocker who had the guts to tell the truth was Sammy Hagar who admitted that grung scared the fuck out of every rock musician up to that point because they knew that sound was beyond anything they could come up. 80's rock bands looked like straight up bozos next to these guys. Why do you think every classic rock musician except those with integrity like Tony Iommi or Jimmy Page didn't give a flying fuck about some drummer that played with one of the 21'st centuries greatest rock songwriters.

I've only watched a small part, but can already tell you that they're taking things out of context and blowing things out of proportions just to create content and discussions. For example, Taylor Hawkins was Dave's best friend, has said so many times. This video's saying he hated Dave because they had one fight 20 years ago, but they made up shortly after and became even closer- so saying they hated each other is ridiculous to say the least. If you want, I can send you links to videos/ interviews where Taylor said himself how much he loved Dave, as proof.

Let’s take watching Cobain become a full-time junkie, marry a fuller-time junkie, try to be a good father while realizing he married a psychopath, and then having that psychopath murder Cobain out of the video. That aside… these incidents represent almost nothing in the way of “issues” with spend a great deal of time with each other 24-7 while being in a wholly unhealthy environment - especially touring (see the stats on musicians contemplating suicide vs. the rest of the populace). In fact, I’m unsure as to why the video was made. Relative to the few people mentioned here, many of whom had and have more serious, lasting personal and/or interpersonal problems, Grohl is, comparatively, quite stable.

I've never, ever gotten that impression from him. Nirvana was a relatively brief time of his life long ago, and while it was obviously massively important and an undeniable catalyst, it was never the be all/end all of Dave Grohl the person or the performer. He's a tremendously accomplished songwriter and musician in his own right, and in no way can he be said to be leaning on his Nirvana days.

Few people have been as inappropriately named as Courtney Love. Nobody loves her and she seems to hate everybody, Dave Grohl included. Everlong is one of the most iconic songs of the 90s and the drum track is by far the best part. That was Grohl. The drums on the Colour and the Shape are awesome though. You don't have to like what happened, but you can't deny the drums turned out awesome. And Taylor Hawkins joined as a result. His drumming completed Foo Fighters. I was just marveling yesterday at how powerful the drums make "The Best of You." Everything about the song is balls to the wall intense and the drums set the tone when they kick in.
