I cite my sources and they may differ than other people's accounts, so I don't guarantee the actual accuracy of my videos.
Soundgarden, Courtney love, pavement,
The smashing pumpkins frontman and leader billy corgan has feuded with many bands and musicians over the years. Today let’s take a look at some of his more notable feuds that don’t involve ex-bandmates and if i’ve missed any put them in the comments section below.
Collective Soul
Collective Soul ascended to prominence in the mid 90’s with their 1994 hit single Shine from their debut album. The song was a huge hit topping the US Mainstream rock charts and it was also a crossover hit peaking at number 11 on the US billboard hot 100.
It was during that the time that Shine took off, The Smashing Pumpkins frontman Billy Corgan slammed Collective Soul in the press referring to Frontman Roland as a "shameless rip off artist" According to Cleveland.com Corgan was upset over how similar the song sounded to the smashing pumpkins track, Drown. Corgan was so upset that he sued Collective Soul in the mid 90’s but Roland was able to produce a demo of the song that dated back to 1989, which predated the formation of the Smashing Pumpkins. It was rumored that Collective Soul for their second album, which was self titled and came out in 1995 wrote a diss track about corgan in 1995 called Smashing Young Man. While Corgan isn’t named in the track there are lyrics like "synthetic-like," and saying he lives in a "self-lit spotlight
And as recently as 2020 Ed Roland gave an interview to Cleavland.com where he clarified what the song was about saying
everyone thought that because he was busy smack-talking about us all the time -- which didn't bother me at all. It's just a fun song, and the next thing you know Billy starts coming at me again and I'm like, "Dude! No, no no..." And finally, there was one point where I just said, "Yeah, it was written about him, sure. Whatever he wants to think, I don't care." But I love Smashing Pumpkins. If I ever met Billy, I'd tell him what a great musician, great songwriter he is. I've got nothing negative to say. I've got other things to do in my life than to bitch about people
The Smashing Pumpkins would surprisingly cover “Shine” at a show in 2010 briefly and heres what happened..” Whoa, heaven let your light shine down. I hate that song. What a rip off of my band. Fast forward to
2019 and Billy Corgan was answering fan questions on Instagram when one fan asked the frontman if he ever made peace with collective soul to which he responded ‘F*** Collective soul, now and always.’
Soundgarden
Billy Corgan gave an interview in 2012 with Philstar just before playing a show in the Philippines where he singled out the band Soundgarden who he labeled as a nostalgia act for making money off playing their old tunes. Soundgarden would reunite in 2010 after a 13 year break. Corgan would say there are bands that are essentially coming back to only make money playing their old albums &maybe somewhere in the back of their minds they are thinking that their might be a future. I'm not in that business obviously. .I condemn anybody whose in that business, but doesn't admit he's in that business. When Soundgarden came back and they just played their old songs. Great! Iwas a fan of Soundgarden. But call it for what it is. They are just out to have one more round at the till he'd say.
The same month Corgan appeared on a a radio station and seemed to indicate that it was Soundgarden frontman Chris Cornell who started the feud the frontman told an interviewer in 2007 that he didn't consider the Smashing Pumpkins reunion at that point in timeas he put it to be legitimate. In 2007 Corgan had reunited with original drummer Jimmy Chamberlin but not the rest of the original band, leading many in the press and in their fanbase to criticize Corgan. Corgan would claim in that same interview
An Cornell would retaliate a few months later in 2012 telling ABC Radio
"When Billy Corgan was completely broke, I got him a movie deal with [director] Cameron Crowe where he made $40,000. He was very happy about that, and he was specifically happy about the $40,000. So

I don't know Billy Corgan personally, so I cannot state what he's like personally other than what I've seen since I was a teenager in high school (44 now....) Many great artists are eccentric and can come off as rude, but fact is there is always another side of the story and context which quotes from people that have had negative run ins with him doesn't really tell the whole story. Low key, this post is a cope. You can't have this many negative accounts from regular people, bandmates, and fellow rockstars, including outright feuds with people and just chalk it up to "there are two sides of the story". Corgan probably *isn't* the bad guy in every dispute, but especially *given the history of his own freakin' band* at the minimum, he's conflict-prone.

Anderson Cooper was trying to puff himself up with some contrived macho attitude, essentially saying rockstars should be throwing tv sets out windows, not showing compassion or sensitivity. I don’t know what century Cooper thinks he’s in, but the whole point of being a ‘rockstar’ is doing your own thing without conforming to expectations. I’d love to hear Cooper pick a fight with Type O Negative frontman Peter Steele for rescuing cats, or Ronnie James Dio for rescuing dogs.

Back in high school - we were about sixteen I think so 1996/1997 - I had a friend whose brother saw Billy Corgan here in Ottawa at the Rideau Centre. Smashing Pumpkins were playing Edgefest or some music festival we had going on, and my buddy's brother went over very nicely and said "hey Billy, I'm a huge fan - would you mind if I got your autograph?" and apparently Billy just gave him an exasperated laugh, brushed him aside and walked off. An hour or so later, still at the mall, he sees Billy with a group of young girls signing all these autographs and being flirty and is justifiably hurt. This guy never got pissed about anything, but he walks by and as he's walking he shouts "HEY, FUCK YOU BILLY CORGAN!" and embarrasses Billy in front of the girls. Simple story but it just cracked us all up hearing our friend's sweet brother put Billy in his place so loudly and succinctly 😂 . I saw Smashing Pumpkins a few years later and they were fantastic, but yeah...fuck you, Billy Corgan 😋.

Nobody looks at Smashing Pumpkins as a current ongoing group, making new relevant music. For most of us that listen to them it’s the era from the basement jam sessions to Adore that we really reminisce on and want to hear songs from and to be honest it’s really the Siamese Dream/Mellon Collie era songs that people really want to hear and there’s nothing wrong with that. Billy’s self-importance has always been the curse of this band and Jimmy ‘s always been the musical backbone. Billy is one of my favorite songwriters of all time and I’ve always loved his distinct voice, but the man should just let the music speak for itself and stop alienating people and try considering his bandmates as equals for once.

It would be cool if he did a concert with Ricky scaggs and Julio Iglesias where they sang each others songs

I saw SP for the first time in 2017. For the entire show, Billy had stylized pictures of himself being projected on a giant screen behind him for 3 hours while they played. In some of them, he appeared like some kind of messiah. I finally understood why people don't like the guy.

I think it’s more like an autobiography photo album style… if the pics weren’t huge then no one in the back could see them. But I get how you got the impression you did

Billy also feuded with The Used's frontman Bert McCracken or whatever his name is

Oh really?! I'd love to know more, where did you learn this? I love both Billy and the Used's music, so this really interests me

@@TheSpecsShow It was around the early 2000's. Bert was dating Kelly Osborne and Billy was beefing with Sharon at the time. Billy and Bert ran into each other at some festival or something, and got into a fight. I can't remember exactly.

The only musicians that don't make at least some enemies in the industry are pushovers. It is VERY difficult to navigate that industry with integrity and commitment to ones art and not ruffle feathers. There are exceptions, but they're few and far between.

I'm pretty sure there was some beef with the Breeders back in the 90s - I remember one of the Deals saying something like "I need the pill - the pill that makes him so f**king important." Don't know why that stuck with me.

I watched Billy Corgan in an interview he was cordial but it was still obvious he was difficult at best.

There are plenty of people in the music industry that are not well liked. Doesn’t mean they’re not talented. Which he is.

He's a really mean guy. My friend was a big fan rang up to talk to them on some radio show. And they teased him for his name. He then went to the gig and got yelled at by Billy saying all you people suck, f you all. He was so confused he paid $ and loved them. And they were just jerks. Especially Billy

Billy is very talented and intelligent. He also has a tendency to come off as arrogant , snarky. Not sure if that’s always deserved. Seems like he’s just very focused and gets irritated by others not on the same page.

The fact that Billy Corgan has controversy around him proves he is a legitimate rock legend.
