I grew up in Chicago, and in the 90's I owned a valet parking company. I had several accounts at night clubs and billy showed up one night, I believe he had a Ferrari, we talked outside for about 10-15 minutes, he was genuinely very nice to me, I play synthesizers and I asked him about his gear, what he likes, etc... He was super chill about all of it and it was something I will always remember.

I live just outside Chicago, and I've visited his tea shop, Madame Zuzu's plenty of times. I've never spoken to him, but I've seen him there on plenty of occasions. Despite Smashing Pumpkins playing a pretty important role in my life, he's always seemed incredibly busy or with his family, so it just never felt right. It was enough for me just to be hanging out in the area. Most of the time I see him ordering from his own place, chatting up locals, being a very nice person. After the tragedy that struck Highland Park, the town where Madame Zuzu's is at, he went right to work with charity work to help the town. He could have chosen to build some cash-in franchise style restaurant in the heart of the city like Michael Jordan, Mike Ditka, Jimmy Buffet, etc, etc. He could have cashed in on HIS name for himself. But he chose to build a small little shop that helped build up a community. I'm sure he could easily do both and it wouldn't be an issue- but the point is he could have just chosen to NOT do any of that. But he supports local artists by USING his name to get people to check out bands/singers/artists that others might just walk right on past. I don't doubt that Billy Corgan has probably ruffled some feathers in the past, but to me he seems like quite the class act.

I've loved Billy since I was about 14, he's a masterful musician and brilliant songwriter. He's been in the music business for decades and never had a sex scandal, drug or rehab scandal, has always been gracious to his fans and is a devoted father and husband. He took his little boy on stage and asked the crowd to sing happy birthday to him, that was so touching. What he doesn't flaunt in everyone's faces is all the charity work he's done and shows he's done for charity that he didn't boast about. He's a good person and he's got balls of steel. Lots of people thought they could bully him and push him around and that's why he had to be a dick sometimes, same with Thom York, he had to stand his ground and I respect that. If you don't think he's a genius listen to Starla. If you don't like his music it's cause all you've heard is the hits.

He was standing next to the bar with his arms crossed (dude is TALL, if you haven't ever met him). I wanted to tell him how much I loved Gish and what I thought of him as a performer and he just yelled at me "Yeah, Man - whatever." Nobody looks at Smashing Pumpkins as a current ongoing group, making new relevant music. For most of us that listen to them it’s the era from the basement jam sessions to Adore that we really reminisce on and want to hear songs from and to be honest it’s really the Siamese Dream/Mellon Collie era songs that people really want to hear and there’s nothing wrong with that. Billy’s self-importance has always been the curse of this band and Jimmy ‘s always been the musical backbone. Billy is one of my favorite songwriters of all time and I’ve always loved his distinct voice, but the man should just let the music speak for itself and stop alienating people and try considering his bandmates as equals for once.

1994 Lollapalooza. I was really looking forward to seeing Smashing Pumpkins. I really enjoyed the studio work done on Gish and Siamese Dream. Not sure if it was Billy, the band, or the sound crew, but most of the crowd tuned out after the second song. Nothing sounded good. What was produced in the studio was hard to imagine that was who was on stage that night. Billy started yelling at the crowd. "FU." "If you haven't noticed, we are the number one band in the world." The crowd went from disinterested, to booing the band off the stage. It got so crazy. The crowd wouldn't let up after Billy fueled the fire with slurs of how horrible the audience was. Billy and the band walked off the stage. Ten minutes later the band came back to play a few more songs and call it a night. I felt bad for them. Some nights things just aren't going right. Rising to the top at that fast of a pace can take a toll. Billy and Chamberlin hardly spoke to each other. Depression, alcohol, drugs; none of that really helps that much. It just lets time go by without a flinch.

Jimmy is great but Billy use to have major talent back when he was Influenced by Jimmy Hendrix, Led zeppelin and Thin Lizzy now he tries to hard to be like Depeche mode or black sabbath and it just comes out sounding really lame with no sense of melody or talent in any way he wont even let Jimmy play to his strengths on records any more.

@@JP-zi9mr I agree Billy was a talented songwriter and guitarist, a perfectionist at that but without the kick ass drumming to distract from his grating, monotone singing, the band most likely would've never gotten off the ground.

Sounds like Corgan is not politic and just too honest for his own good. But he doesn't sound like a hateful guy. Doesn't sound like the kind of guy who'd say sweet things to the press to make himself look better, then passive aggressively try to destroy those he doesn't like.

Back in high school - we were about sixteen I think so 1996/1997 - I had a friend whose brother saw Billy Corgan here in Ottawa at the Rideau Centre. Smashing Pumpkins were playing Edgefest or some music festival we had going on, and my buddy's brother went over very nicely and said "hey Billy, I'm a huge fan - would you mind if I got your autograph?" and apparently Billy just gave him an exasperated laugh, brushed him aside and walked off. An hour or so later, still at the mall, he sees Billy with a group of young girls signing all these autographs and being flirty and is justifiably hurt. This guy never got pissed about anything, but he walks by and as he's walking he shouts "HEY, FUCK YOU BILLY CORGAN!" and embarrasses Billy in front of the girls. Simple story but it just cracked us all up hearing our friend's sweet brother put Billy in his place so loudly and succinctly 😂 . I saw Smashing Pumpkins a few years later and they were fantastic, but yeah...fuck you, Billy Corgan 😋.

Paws Chicago isn’t just a ‘cat magazine’. Anyone who’s involved in animal rescue knows how much work they do saving abandoned & abused dogs, cats & domestic pets. Anderson Cooper was trying to puff himself up with some contrived macho attitude, essentially saying rockstars should be throwing tv sets out windows, not showing compassion or sensitivity. I don’t know what century Cooper thinks he’s in, but the whole point of being a ‘rockstar’ is doing your own thing without conforming to expectations. I’d love to hear Cooper pick a fight with Type O Negative frontman Peter Steele for rescuing cats, or Ronnie James Dio for rescuing dogs.
