They did such a great job teaching those kids how to dance and you can tell that some of hem really do feel the music. Just a shame that so much of the dance scenes ended up on the cutting room floor and the film ended up being about some lads who were heavily into drugs and just happened to do a bit of dj-ing and go to some Northern Soul venues

Would be great to get a complete track listing. These are amazing. Are these motown songs that did not make the charts in America?
@tollyt74655 жыл бұрын
Some are Motown, but many are on small independent labels that flopped or were B sides that people never listened to before the Northern Soul DJ's from venues like The Twisted Wheel, Mecca, Torch, Wigan Casino, Cleethorpes etc imported from the US.. As an example the original recording of Tainted Love by Gloria Jones was on the B side of a flop single called "my bad boys coming home" in 1965 on the Champion label.. NS dancers loved it, she re released it in 1976, then Soft Cell released it in 1982 and it was a hit.. Many great songs like this would have been lost without the Northern Soul scene.. You can also see the evolution from NS dancing to the Bboy breakdancing scene from early videos of the great venues..

Did the Stoke Newington NS dance club and scene continue after the hit film was made?
@thecut79373 жыл бұрын
No unfortunately. Those sessions in Angel and Stoke Newington ran for 3 years and people learnt to dance by watching, and talking, listening to the music and dancing with each other. They became addicted to the music just as we did in the heyday. Friends were made and bonds that still remain today. It really was a unique monthly session that the young dancers travelled for from across the Uk. It was a club that inspired and had an unbelievable energy because many were hearing this music for the first time as we did in the 70's and it electrified them.
@Pulsonar3 жыл бұрын
@@thecut7937 thanks for responding, I always wondered what happened, it seemed like a great little revivalist club. I was stunned at the energy and passion of these young and keen dancers for this old genre. It’s a pity that it didn’t continue with the next generation, but I think the NS revivalist spirit kicked off in many parts of the U.K. over the last 7-8 years or so since a few NS documentaries were aired on TV and a few good film dramas about the 70s NS were released. I think a great many are still keeping the faith in their hearts if not on the dance floor 🙂

They had the fine qualities which bore me - thrift and industry and long-faced holiness, and the young women are mostly great genteel boisterous things who are no doubt bedworthy enough if your taste runs that way. (One acquaintance of mine who had a Northern Soler's DJ daughter described it as like wrestling with a sergeant of dragoons.) The men I found solemn, hostile, and greedy, and they found me insolent, arrogant, and smart.”
