Steve reviews the GunVault SpeedVault SV500 and demonstrates some of its features. The default password of "1 2 3 4" is for demonstration purposes. Of course I changed it after shooting the video. And yet... I'm sure people will still comment on it. :)

Oh my god. I'm so glad that you mentioned Amazon! I was stupid for not thinking of that in the first place. But just as a tip for anyone out there- I went straight to the actual website to find the product when I first heard about it and they have it priced at like $230 dollars. Little did I know that you can find one on eBay for as low as $77!!!

Thanks. I saw another youtuber video that had an issue, and it turned out to be that Lithium batteries do not work well with this unit. (May or may not have caused a failure. The manufacturer told him to NOT use lithium batteries).Just FYI.

I love this idea in every way except for one thing. I wish that there were an option for the mechanism to work fully mechanically. Something about it being battery operated and electronic just bothers me a little bit. I know that it will warn you if the battery is low and there is even a key if all else fails, but I just think for sheer reliability and ease of use, it would be very useful for it to be fully mechanical. To get an idea of the type of mechanism that I'm talking about, look up the Fort Knox PB1 Original Pistol Safe. If they could somehow implement that into this product I think that it would be 100% solid for what it is.

Nice review. Can't stand that damn noise. Glad it can be turned off. Another idea I had for an in-wall conceal: Cut hole in drywall about shoulder level... fasten gun holster to inner stud about 2 feet lower than hole. Make sure reaching through the hole in the wall that a shorter arm (like a kid's) cannot reach down and grab the gun. Screw a fake painting on the wall over hole with only construction paper thin paper - so in case of emergency you can punch through the paper and grab gun. Can also put a very sturdy metal lock box face-plate at lower gun level to take gun out for any other reason. Don't tell kids it's in the wall! Faster to get the gun out and kids can't reach the gun. Emergency happens, just punch through the picture paper and you have your gun.

+YakMan NC - Great idea, but that would put this out of the proper price point for something like this. As a safe and vault technician my recommendation would be to go with the keypad version and not the biometric version. The inexpensive biometric units tend to be either too finicky or just the opposite and end up letting in people that should not, neither are ideal in a break in situation. And while this is a light duty unit that offers minimal security, it is really an ideal product for it's intended purpose.

It's good that you didn't get the finger print reader, because it could defeat it with a chewing gum foil wrapper. Check Handgun Safe Research. I'd also be a bit leery of the tubular lock, but I'm leery on almost all handgun safes that have a backup key lock. Anyway, thanks for sharing. Do not recommend storing any weapon in these for long-term since they are easily defeated...read on (!). Good for overnight storage to keep you kids out, as the reviewer states. All these tubular, barrel or round 7mm-8mm keys are easily opened using a pen barrel! That is how I opened a used one I purchased for $10 that someone locked themselves out. The keylocks are best replaced with a $12 Combi-lock which requires 999 attempts to open (3 dials). Basically, all these pistol vault or lock boxes are accidents waiting to happen...go ahead, try the pen barrel trick. You will open yours in less than ten seconds!

These lock boxes are designed for planned obsolescence. Figure out how long the warranty is, and ask yourself if you are ok with the price of the unit knowing that it is only guaranteed to work during the warranty period. The motorized unit is embedded, and cannot be repaired or replaced. A quick Google search for “GunVault Reviews” reveals that they fail, and quite frequently. I wish that I had searched for reviews before spending a lot of money on mine. When the motorized unit that opens the vault fails (and it will) you can only open the vault with a key. Customer service will not offer you ANYTHING other than an apology, and instructions to use the Vault with a key from now on.

Here is a link to a review of another similar model from GunVault that can be opened with a bit of foil gum wrapper. the fellow does a lot of research and reviews on gun safes. Many he proves to be much less secure than you think and of course he approves many, as well. There are a number of pistol safes around that have the approval sticker form the California DOJ but are NOT on the DOJ's list of approved safes. They come from China with that sticker in place. GunVault has fixed some of the security problems associated with the design they are using. Other manufacturers use variations on the same design that have many security problems. Including two small holes on the left side (left if facing it" that allow you to open it with a bit of coat hanger wire. He is worth checking out, I think. He is not anti gun, just anti bad gun safes. kzbin.info/www/bejne/gZWkXq2LoLJmac0 Sometimes people are paying a lot of money and getting only a false sense of security. Avoid Stack On products, they are trash and carry the fake California DOJ approved sticker. The California DOJ will give you the list of approved gun safes. Stack On never even tried to get approval because they knew they would be denied.

Some guy on KZbin made a "fail video" about this safe, using a paperclip to pull the cable inside and disengage the latch/lock. He turned off the comments, so I couldn't rebut and offer a solution to the problem, so here it goes: The problem is, most of the cable is covered by a metal strip with two small holes, which is where he managed to slip the paperclip in, and grab the cable; going through the crack between the sidewall of the safe and the drop door, and then up through the small hole in the metal strip, protecting the cable. The simple solution being to weld or solder or glue a metal or wooden cover over the holes on the metal strip. Problem solved.
