Today I review every S-Rank in Zenless Zone Zero. I'll be going through the units one by one, even Ellen and Zhu Yuan, and talking about how strong they can be, who they can work with, and why they excel at what they do. I think all of them have a place in ZZZ as the game and meta are still early on, and some of them hold some strong future potential. Let me know your thoughts on this review / guide!

Koleda is invincible when she's in the air even with out Ben Bigger. Just need getting used to. What I'm not sure of is if she has more s with Ben

There's a lot of characters that become invincible during the end of their basic chain, I know Piper and Ben both do. Not downplaying Koleda tho she's my favorite S star lol

I've been playing Koleda with Ben for a couple days now and I can tell you right now that she does not have s when she hits the ground after jumping, this can be really annoying since she can get stopped just before the big explosion that happens when she lands. With Ben this is not a problem since she's invincible throughout her entire 4th attack.

The entire animation until the final hit is invincible, but changes if you swap to Ben and get hit while. I like the comp alot because Koleda really does ramp up stun values while applying Burns at a pretty decent rate imo. I like that these standard characters all have solid application.

@@FineUser I never have this issue, never been hit in his animation once however i imagine it's timing and takes practice for some people to get use to it ( i prefer to not use ben )

Koleda is a master class in follow through animation, which is why i love her so much. When she blasts an enemy on her trigger points during the combo, she gets blasted back by the explosion, cartwheels midair, and also crunches her hammer down for a second impact showing the weight of her strikes. The only other characters in the game that appropriately do this are Anton who has heavy but snappy impact and brace frames and Piper who uses her entire body's momentum to carry her battle axe and swings on it upon the release of her EX. A runner up would be Ben, because the weight of his piston driver slows him down but has some weirder conveyance of weight. When he slams it down to brace fpr impact, it has a nice weighty crash to the ground... but when he counters with it, he holds it by the end of its length and swings it as if it was light as a feather, which is not at all how he maneuvers normally. His ultimate is also pretty nice.

That only happens when you counter, so I took it as he's using the hit he tanked to help swing the piston

@@AnakinFury Yeah, but it still doesn't match it the conveyance of its weight because he then has to fully pick it up be the end to swing it horizontally while also gaining momentum to spin forward, which is still does not match the rest of his movement.

@@PixelleHearts Not entirely though. Consider that during the combo when you do his finisher his piston turns on and he Jumps so high for his size. Maybe the force going outwards helps fuel the centripetal force of his wild swing, which if my math is correct would still require a lot of strength to pivot that much force going outwards into a rotating motion. Then again, Ben is a bear, so he could be packing that strength naturally and conditionally due to his occupation.

My S rank team needs to time properly the dodge and then on the third frame of the second chain of attacks I can get an increase of 0'5% output to my damage by investing heavily on this W-Engine that I can get by sacrificing 3 chickens to an ancient god and then I c-🤓☝ Billy Kid: 🔫😎

Hi Guoba, just wanted to note, Zhu Yuan's core skill actually synergizes with Support characters (and Faction), NOT Ether characters, so her team flexibility is way higher than only Nicole. Lucy with Koleda / Rina with Lycaon or Anby are just two out of many possible options for Zhu. Not many people seem to have noticed this yet, as she's the only one with this in the game so far.

​@@Variusn For real! I didn't play any of the CBTs but it may have changed for release. You can see and test it in the Trial Story (assuming you have not done it already) I've yet to see any CC take note of it and talk about it, but I hope the information for this gets out for those excited for Zhu. Tried make a video about it but the chance of having my little thrown-together low-quality video being seen as a 0 subscribed person definitely isn't probable 😂

​@@Kuddochan The defense reduction and Ether boost are nice, but they're only 3.5 seconds long. With Nicole you're almost bound to play Anby as well, because none of the other stun characters we currently have gets their core skill. I'd argue Koleda & Lucy, Rina & Lycaon are both better options, if you have them.

about soldier 11 (and maybe nekomana too): the cn players have found ways to time soldier 11's attacks based on various things (one of them being a children's song) and they can consistently give fire infusion to her basics i tried it a bit too, but unfortunately i can't always remember the rhythm (skill issue on my part) but soldier 11 feels better even with fire infusion 80% of the time

You just have to hit as soon as the slash make contact with the floor or surface it hits because the sword is like a real world flint striker. She ignites it by friction.

I think 11 works best with stun teammates. Her core passive makes her deal more damage to stunned enemies. So quicker the enemy get stunned the bigger damage she deals

This 100% - most people have shown that Soldier 11/Koleda/Lucy or Soldier 11/Koleda/Ben are S11's best teams for this reason and more.

I'm using 11 with koleda and Lycaon. this team is good for fast stuns, dmg buff on stunned enemies, and quick burn with 2 fire based characters. they basically melt everything.

My main team is Koleda + Ben + Soldier 11 and man the amount of damage she outputs against stunned units is absolutely insane. Koleda stuns an enemy, gets assisted by Ben and then Soldier 11 and then Soldier 11 ults for the extra 25% attack increase from her 4 piece relic set into her EX skill and you just absolutely melt bosses.

Neko with Lucy and Piper goes hard. Lucy starts battle and can instantly quick assist to Piper with one single press of the ex button, piper spins to build her damage stacks and assault then Neko speeds in for her EX attack which gets boosted damage against enemies inflicted with assault two times before the boost disappears . Add in Nekos dodge counters and being able to “phase” thru an enemy to be behind them for back attacks (which also get a boost and when you get one of her mindscapes anytime you hit stunned enemy it counts as a back attack) and she can dish some awesome physical damage numbers

If you watch high tier clears right now you will see it's really about disorder/anomaly, Rina is good but not because she pairs well with Anton, but because she enables the shock disorder team for example. Same with many other units in this list. This MIGHT change in the future as crit scalers catch up in gear but it doesn't really look like it...

Guoba pierced my heart with the Koleda shilling. I honestly thought my account was done for when I pulled koleda and she was said to be a worse stunner than lycaon, until I noticed she oneshots the bar off of one combo or EX special. Although Lycaon's passive of more dmg to stunned is better, I think Koleda is going to definitely raise in ranks when a character releases with some chain attack damage mechanic.

Tip for Zhu Yuan now that she’s out: her suppression shells do increased bonus damage to stunned targets by a lot. As such giving her energy regen so she can use her ex special for more shells and pairing her with a good stunner can lead her to having a massive burst chain for bosses.

Would love to get Ellen especially since I have Lycaon, but I'm a dolphin on a budget so I'm saving for Zhu so I can continue working on having multiple teams with specific elements with a flex slot. Zhu Yuan is alot different to other agents since she does'nt have sinergy with agents of the same attack type and instead gets synergy with support class agents (Nicole, Lucy, Soukaku and Rina at this time) giving her the most variaty when it comes to possible team compilations.

The game gave me c1 Grace and c0 Nekomata in pretty short order, as well as Grace's signature w-engine, so... Grace! She's fun and I'm always a sucker for DoTs and debuffs. Though I'm absolutely going to pull for Zhu Yuan. I love the visual of ether and corruption and playing as her in the story was a blast.

Lycaon was my first S rank draw. Utility-wise, he is my favorite one so far. Pairing him with Ellen and Rina, even though Soukaku might make more sense. Ellen does great damage with her w engine. I have about 70% cr when doing the dash attack, and the health bars melt away. Once I'm done building my S ranks, I will start building designated teams around them.

I was kinda mad at first since I really wanted Lycaon to go with Ellena, but now I really enjoy her playstyle and the story made me love her character so the outcome for me is still pretty good. Soldier 11 was the first S Rank I got and I paired her with Lucy and Ben. They're especially effective in Hollow Zero. When you get enough Fire attribute cards with them, the constant fire damage is absolutely disgusting.

I am currently running a Piper - Lucy - Nekomata team and it feels okay since nekomata is my first s rank and i'm f2p Piper helps prok assult which boost nekomata ex special plus her power passive boosts everyones damage I think you can switch lucy with other support or a stunner

Of the non-limited S rank characters I'm finding Nekomata to be pretty versatile. Rina is a lot of fun to use too and Soldier 11 really packs a punch. Of the ones I don't have I'm excited to get Lycaon next and maybe potentially Grace someday. I did have a lot of fun unlocking Ellen however I can tell with Zhu Yuan I'm starting to run out of content to keep up with the polychrome supply needed for the rolls especially having lost the 50-50 on Yuan's banner. My plan is to make the most of Yuan's banner for the guaranteed unlock and then start saving up polychromes for future characters. I'm pretty confident with Ellen and Yuan on my team, I should have a decent cohort of strong characters to get me through to the end-game.

I'm reaching chapter 3 so I haven't tested everyone "in context" but the game graced me with 2 koledas (beginner banner + losing 50/50) so I play her even though I dropped Ellen today. I'm still having issues figuring out if there are any damage differences when you play her with Ben but I love to have a bear team 🐻

I've got a similar story - pulled Nekomata twice on the standard banner, then a third time after losing the 50/50 once for Ellen. Now I have the shark, but also zero excuses not to build the cat. I only got 2 S-ranks TO build after hitting pity four times... why'd all my luck end up going to the bangboos?

Fire team is so underrated 😅 Ben daze multiplier is literally almost the same as a stunner unit which help the enemy stun more. with soldier 11 she can 2-3 cycle shiryu def 8 tru 10 with 4pc fire set with that insane 28% free crit bec how fast they stunning the enemies. koleda basic attack almost uninterruptable with ben, bec ben animation can shield kaledo from attacks on ground while at the top of ben, without ben shes really interruptable. I would say the wolf guy is better stunner at buffing teams but id say kaledo/ben is more comfort bec of the shield and ben's blocking which give him free immune/daze/dmg counter to the enemies.

My favorite S rank is Rina but I still don't have her T.T early on I tried them all out in the VR training and she instantly captured my heart. It's taking so much willpower not to pull on the standard banner to choose her on the guaranteed 300 because I got Ellen and also want Zhu Yuan, so I'm saving. I'm not very interested in the characters that will come after, except Miyabi, and given she won't be for awhile I feel I can focus on the standard after pulling Zhu Yuan. After playing her in the story mission trial tho, she could very well become my favorite because she's really cool and fun to play. Martial arts, a handgun, and a more useful ether unit? What's not to love!

Koleda and Grace are my favorites but thats mostly because i have a heavy bias towards the Belobog faction. That being said, in terms of "fun factor" Grace is still pretty high up there with Nekomata on top

Favriote s rank by design is either Ellen or Rina but the only s rank I have so far is koleda who's pretty fun and paired with anby stuns like crazy

I am testing out Ellen- koleda- Ben. I have Ellen t1 with signature w engine and I play her on field pretty much 100% of time. My account is inter knot level 36. I do my chain attack and go right back into Ellen again. I dropped soukako after I realize I never give her the feild time to let the flag fly. Lycaon is amazing and I will inner swap him out maybe for enemy weakness purposes. But I really like Ben for support. I’m pretty much playing with one life total because of my plan style just keeping those frost stacks going with Ellen at all times. Her daze build up and damage is so good before the chain attack it feels bad to be fielding any other character. Nicole is another one I’m building because putting her in third slot feels very good as well. I want to add piper and Lucy but I already stretched my self thin. All resources need to be used carefully at this time. I’m risking progression trying to build a second team so soon.

Same here I would love to run her with nekomata and Lucy but whoopiee doo all I have is Lucy and a nekomata engine so got a long way before I can do that lol

Nekomata is actually quite unique in the sense that she's "Speedy" type (if it ever become a thing in this game). By speedy I mean she have tons of i-frame and she can teleport for her dodge counter. Basically she'll always end up close and personal even against ranged enemy on the other side of the map unlike other melee unit who have limited range on their counter attack, She excel at closing distance and dealing with spread out enemy which is important for saving those time in Shiyu defense. OAlso sometimes just warping around attacking enemy all over the place just looks cool. She's definitely the easiest DPS to use right now since a lot of her attack is not punishable.

I was today years old when i realised Nekomata was S Rank lol, ive played the game every day since launch and it never clicked! The way my pulls went i did commit to Ellen and got her in about 120ish pulls (got a M1 Lycoan and M6 Sokaku on the way) That and a Soldier 11 / Piper / Lucy 2nd team has me set for now. I have a soft spot for Soldier 11 but i think Lycoan has to take the top spot for best standard S Rank as any team can use his easy proc Stuns

People are sleeping on S11, Piper, Lucy team. Disorder damage is crazy. The damage is comparable to the meta ice team now, the only drawback, it's harder to use.

For the Soldier 11 Team (mono Fire) - shouldn't Koledo be placed in there for the Stunner role since stunners are arguably more important than Defense or Support at this point in the game? It seems like CN cc's have been saying her two best in slot teams are Soldier 11/Koleda/Lucy and Soldier 11/Koleda/Ben.

Ben is actually halfway decent at stunning, though I think some CCs are still thinking of the CBTs where you could put impact w-engines on him. Without that benefit, he really falls behind the real stunners. Mostly though I think Guoba just wanted to show an F2P-friendly team. At this phase of the game, it's rare that players will have two synergistic S-ranks unless they got lucky. If you've managed to pull both S11 and Koleda, then congrats, that's a very strong duo.
