The general standard of tuning is CDFGACD (lowest open string to highest). However there are many different tunings that can be used and in general sometimes the tension of different strings (silk or more common nylon strings) can make it difficult to reach certain pitch thresholds. Say you asre dueting with another older Guqin that doesn't match your instrument and can't reach your instruments pitch threshold. So in this case most Guqin teachers teach students to tune using harmonics. This means you match the open 5th string then use harmonics to tune the remaining strings by pressing certain hui (the dots ) rather then just tuning each string individually. This allows for the instruments to march and sound in tune even though they are not adhering to the standard tuning. Hope this makes sense.
