The more i learn about Gurps. The more it becomes clear why Gurps is both loved but also not likely to ever become anywhere as popular as Dungeons & Dragons or Call of Cthulhu. It's the simple fact that gurps is less of a unified system. An more like a highly customizable tool box for building systems.

You sparked my interest and according to GCS bears claws are a thrusting a attack that deal crushing damage. While I know this follows the rules for unarmed attacks. It does seem more "true to life", IMO, that a bear claws would be a swinging attack dealing cutting damage. Of course with GURPS you're free to make these kinds of changes. Thanks again for the videos they bring up a bunch of great points and get you thinking!

A bears claws are failry blunt for claws. Comparable logic to a flanged mace. Still, not only does a bear swing with his claws it will also throw it's weight behind the blow, so they should do doing swinging damage.

Good presentation, but I disagree about all the strength vs swing/thrust stuff. The weapons tend to be different enough to make up for it. Thrust usually has reach and can hit vitals, and a halberd is simply superior to a spear (at least in many cases) Mushing it all up is what makes it lose flavor, in my opinion, anyway.

I'm new to GURPS but as I learn, I've started to view it as a TTRPG "game engine" in the same manner as video game engines such as Unreal Engine. You can make anything with it, it's really easy to use, but it has SO MANY tools, that as a result, there's a steep initial learning curve. But also, you only use the tools you need; but it can be intimidating at first figuring out what you need and what you can ignore. However, the system does load the majority of the workload on the GM which, while it's a burden, it's not really difficult. And it's not too much effort to set up a game for players with minimal explanation. Much of the rules can be taught during the character creation stage and first session.

The thing is that most thrusting weapons are Impaling which means x2 damage modifier period. Whith some hit locations making it even nastier. Yeah you can get impaling damage on a swinging weapon but it comes with some major drawbacks. I can see the rational. That being said swinging does ramp up way to quickly, and strikers like a bears claws should be able to allow for swinging damage, even if that might make it more expensive.

Thank you for the video. I'll definitely re-watch as I'm pretty new to GURPS. I feel as though the wounding modifiers were overlooked (I'll see on my re-watch). For example, thrusting weapons tend to do impaling damage which has a x2 wounding modifier. Were as swinging weapons tend toward cutting damage with a 1.5 wounding modifier. So at ST10 against opponent with DR0 (for simplicity) thrust would do 2-8 damage while swing would do 1-9. At ST14 against DR0 this would be thrust 2-12 and swing 3-18. At ST18 against DR0 this would be thrust 6-16 and swing 4-27. I know differing DR's will have an impact but you also have to consider that thrusting only weapons will tend to have reach and don't become un-ready. Overall it seems to play pretty balanced while keeping interesting differences and strategies between weapon types.
