Finished Kill La Kill today. I feel empty. I got the same feel after i finished Gurren Lagann years ago. Both of them are amazing with over the top action scenes, really good OSTs, VA and overall style. Both of them were good and re-watchable. Both of them gave me goosebumps. I don’t know too much about Japanese history, but I did notice a few parallels between KLK and WWII: - What are the students always learning about when we’re inside classroom? Right. The perpetual World War II lesson. - Ragyo’s theme (Blumenkranz) is full of symbols pointing towards eugenics, such as the symbolism of picking out the “best” flowers and turning them into a wreath. Plus, the song is (supposed to be) in German - This one is looser, but I was thinking that the mass-produced clothes are somewhat similar to the “non-Aryan indicators,” such as the yellow Star of David and pink triangle for Jews and gays respectively. - The Tri-City Invasion (I think that’s what it was called), as well as the rest of the schools taken by Satsuki, represents the expansion of Germany. I had more, but I can’t recall them at this ungodly hour.

14:57 Oda Nobunaga is not a Shinto God. He was a shogun who started the unification of Japan, thus a very famous and significant historical military figure in Japan. He is often referenced in pop culture as a “demon” who is motivated with strong political ambition. The use of Honnoji in KLK is to emphasis Satsuki’s political ambition to overthrow her mother’s authority by echoing Oda Nobunaga’s ambition. So it’s not a Shinto reference, it’s a historical reference.

I personally think Gurren Lagann was better. Not knocking Kill La Kill, it was great but I personally found Gurren Lagann to be better. Definitely liked Simon as the main character a lot more, seeing him grow up and mature was amazing. Also loved the connection between Kamina and Simon, they honestly where like blood brothers and the anime showed it multiple times throughout its run time from the limited 8 episodes and in future episodes after. Especially during that flashback Yoko had with Kamina saying Simon gave him strength to move forward and made all his big talk real brought a tear to my eye, because that showed us that they do rely on one another for support more than we realized. It showed us their “brotherly” love so to say, it felt a lot more passionate. Even though Kill la Kill had its fair share of passion and epic moments I felt Gurren Lagann’s had a lot more better handled epic moments and that’s probably because of the main characters of their each respective shows, Simon and Ryuoko. In Kill la Kill we are immediately shown how badass Ryuoko is, sure she fell from grace a few times throughout the show and had great character development but with Simon’s character development it was better, because when Simon is shown to us we immediately see that he’s weak and lacks confidence so seeing him grow into having those qualities and the show keeping on showing us that he can do it if he only believes in himself, it felt a lot more heart warming and meaningful. But, with Ryuoko she is shown automatically to be a badass and completely confident in herself till later on but seeing Simon grow up compared Ryuoko growing up definitely didn’t have that same impact. In the end I do believe Gurren Lagann to be better but Kill la Kill definitely isn’t meant to be looked down upon, it’s still a damn good show and there’s a reason why it’s compared to Gurren Lagann, that means it’s that good.

Yes I totally agree with the build up of the hero’s journey definitely goes way more to gurren lagann I felt it right at the first episode and stuck to the end of the emotional epic growth journey and I didn’t regret it from a development grown character stand point gurren lagann has it all and even has the morale that teached me no matter how bad things get in life and what you lose you have to develop and move on for the better gurren lagann help me with my depression after I lost my father 4 years ago😢. I love Simon and how he develops as a character who went on as a weakling of just digging holes looking up to kamina and idolizing him then thrust into the hero’s journey of adventure and it changed simon forever he lost his best Bro he then Had to deal with his depression of loss as other did then in which Nia snap him out of then lost others on the way and in the end He even lost nia the girl of his life yet he still went on we all can relate to Simon as a character gurren lagann had a moral of life is F up but you still go on I found gurren lagann to be the anti optimistic counter to Evangeline when you look at the parallel context I can never stop making that comparison Now don’t get me wrong I love kill la kill satsuki is my badass waifu let me just get that clear ok LOL 😂 but to be honest kill la kill just didn’t have that same feeling growth impact on me that gurren lagann did. I think Kill la Kill beats it out for me because of character economy. Kill la Kill makes every character memorable and worth being on screen. They are all fun in their own way and evolve with the narrative, while also not taking too much screentime away from the main characters. On the other hand, Gurren Lagann has a supposedly main character, Yoko, who can be taken out of the story without much alteration, quirky but unimportant side characters that I feel nothing for when they all die in the end, and bland side characters that are technically important, but aren't that memorable. So, while I love both of these series, Kill la Kill has the edge for me.

Kill La kill is one of the most unique animes what I have watched, that made me feel like I was watching anime for the first time again. The work is action packed, has enough nudity that you don't need to watch anything nudity related for couple of years. In today's anime world. There are a ton of isekais, or something related to high school where main characters are in love put don't do about it for 2 seasons until they say I love you, and the series ends. The Kill La Kill brought back to me the thing why I watched anime. What it brought? Uniqueness, fun and going beyond all expectations. It was fun to watch. It will be remembered, by many.

I rewatched Kill la Kill for the second time recently. I'll say it here: I don't think Ryuko is a particularly strong or compelling protagonist. Her aim essentially amounts to "I want revenge for my father, and screw everyone who gets in my way, except my closest friends". She recklessly plunges headfirst into every fight someone picks with her, and the show actively rewards her (for the most part) for taking part in these aimless fights. She gets ludicrously strong very quickly, at no real cost to her. In the series, she has the least to lose if she fails, and is often swept up into the events around her outside of her own volition. Think about it: Senketsu forces himself on to Ryuko, forcing her to get stronger without an real understanding as to why. Ryuko's "losses" result from something Ryuko could not prevent or foresee. Ryuko didn't understand her familial situation at all, but it doesn't matter, and it doesn't change any kind of relationship dynamics. For the most part, Ryuko plays along with Honnouji Academy (go figure, when her best episode has her having some agency and CHOOSING to take part in Honnouji Academy's power structure, enriching the lives of Mako & Family). Satsuki, by contrast, is a MUCH more compelling character, driven by a set of deeply-rooted ideals, who doesn't always end up on the winning side of her fights. By the end of the series, Satsuki is a largely changed character from the beginning of the story, due to her experiencing failure on a fairly massive scale, something that she had dedicated a large portion of her life to. Ryuko just beat the main bad guy. That's it, really.

Kill La Kill has better pacing and is my personal favorite of the two. It has a really weird lighting-in-a-bottle feel to it, the way it seems so loose, messy, and all over the place, yet comes together to create something more than the sum of its parts. Gurren Lagann feels so stiff storytelling wise (by comparison), even though in my logical brain, I feel like it is technically "better". It's an excellently told hero's journey that escalates beyond imagination, but in the end it's just a hero's journey. Kill la Kill, on the other hand, is just something that feels completely unique. It melds all types of anime stories together to create something that feels fresh. And I think its antagonists (Satsuki, Ragyo, and Nui) are what really give it the edge over Gurren Lagann. I love everything about those 3 characters. Satsuki in particular being one of the greatest, most badass anime characters of all time, in my opinion.

I like the characters and animation in Kill la Kill more and the story and pacing of Gurren Laggan more. That is all

The themes displayed in each series are so different the only comparisons I made were baseline story beats, Like the 4 generals trope and both having a big twist reveal about halfway through.

Did it make your understanding deeper, or did you just adopt someone else's half-baked ideas about the show because he conveyed them in a really official sounding manner via a KZbin video with tons of views and likes?

If you wanna do it the Japanese way, It's Shimon. シモン literally reads Shi-mon. The problem is how he pronounce it, as most people who doesn't speak Japanese do. Kiryūin Ragyō will be pronounce as Ki-RYU-in RA-gyo if you don't follow the Japanese way. Japanese pronounce their R as a light tap, whereas others make it a hard tongue-rolling R. The problem is the same in Gurren Lagann. it becomes Gu-REN Lagann.

Gurren Lagaan and Kill last Kill are some of my favorites because they gave me that same feeling as the first time I watch FLCL just something so different than want most people I know are watching it feels like I'm the only one watching such a great anime and that's what defines good anime to me. if it makes you feel like it is amazing then dammit it's amazing
@dashman84995 жыл бұрын
Personal opinion, I think there are points in which Gurren Lagann surpasses Kill La Kill, but Kill La Kill is better as an narrative. Lagann s first half is great but suffers technical problems, while the second half suffers pacing and narrative issues. Kill La Kill felt completely in tone and fluid the entire time and really broadened my scope of what animation can be. Both of these shows really inspire me though
@foop1456 жыл бұрын
I know this video is pretty old, but I watched it recently, and my initial reaction was "there's a debate on this? Gurren Lagann is clearly superior." However, with your video in mind, I went back and re-watched Kill la Kill, and I just wanted to say thank you. Maybe it's because I'm older now, but I liked it 10x more than I did when I originally saw it. It really does a fantastic job of working contradictions in all over the place and blending it all together. I don't know how I didn't pick up on this theme in my initial viewing, Satsuki's opening line something like a minute in is "Fear is freedom! Subjugation is liberation! Contradiction is truth!" Again, thank you. This anime went from maybe a 7.5 to a 9-9.5 in my book because of the points you make here.

I never knew that both shows had the same people. I watched Kill la Kill first then was somehow drawn Gurren Lagan. Watched both back to back and completely fell in love with both, but when it comes to impact. Gurren Lagann has made an impact on how I think. Yet I think that both are equally amazing.

DIGIBRO i need to understand something real important about Gurren Laggan, the question is: what should i take from Simons story in general due to the fact that even though the story suggests that Simon is an individual of his own ideals after his growth, and yet he still feels like nothing more than a Kamina clone??? im not even joking seriously, the problem is that after Kaminas death everything Simon does is done in the way that it feels Kamina could have done later, so please hear me out. my main problem is that i honestly loved all the characters from the beginning, Yoko, Simon and Kamina especially, and once i got to episode 8 i was hoocked, yet once Kamina dies and i get completly shocked by shuch events i thought i was going to see an even more amazing show than i could possibly imagine, and the truth is, after that, there is literally not ONE episode that i enjoy or feel like it works good for the shows itself. I DO feel like i get the show but once it ends i cant help but feel dissapointed, i dont feel like i saw Simon grow, i felt only that i saw a clone of Kamina show up that never quite became as good. Now heres the thing, i do believe this could have been more amazing if instead of Kamina dying the group would get split apart, this way Simon would have had to learn to handle himself while protecting Nina, and now Yoko and Kamina would have to learn how to handle things while searching for Simon while at the same time feeling like Simon could be dead and it could all be their fault. This way, not only would we see some growth from SImon but as well Kamina, who i was really hoping would have been the one leading the whole thing through with someone that would later be amazing as well like Simon, and even Yoko (im really sorry if im not explaining myself properly) so the thing is, how do i deal with this? how do i deal with a show that in order to show me a coming of age story gave me a character that by the end of the series didnt feel as rewarding like it indicates that it is suposed to be and that i feel like the story even though feels incredibly epic it doesnt feel AS epic because of this? p.s: yokos part on becoming a teacher felt incredibly obsurd in the way it was delivered or am i the only one that feels like this?
@GigaDonk997 жыл бұрын
Simone didn't really grow into a new version of Kamina, though. Kamina was a headstrong manly man who never ran away from a fight, even when his life depended on it, and it got him killed. Simone's relationship with Nia is what made him into a more well-rounded leader than Kamina. She taught him that while there is a place for assertiveness and manliness, it's still important to take a step back and think things through when the situation calls for it. Don't always charge in blindly, and don't always go with whatever crap your mentor fed you. Challenge other peoples' ideals, and assess whether they're worth anything on your own. Simone's not the same as Kamina by the end. He's better. Kamina never had anyone like Nia in his life. Simone took the best ideas that Kamina and Nia had and was molded by both of them. He's a smart dude that knows when to let things take their course, but he's also brave and never gives up the fight. I also see no issue with Yoko being a teacher. I don't fully understand what led her to doing that, but I found it charming and didn't really question it.
@danbark46037 жыл бұрын
see this right here what you just wrote is EXACTLY my problem, because i feel like i understand that, i really really do, BUT, by killing of Kamina and having Simon make so many of his gestures and yells as part of him kind of felt like ripping of someone elses cool sense, and i GET that it makes sense, BUT AGAIN it doesnt FEEL right, never through the series did it feel right, i wanted Simon to grow up by having Nia be his main motif for development and i also wanted to see Kamina develop into a better character, but once they kill Kamina there is no more place to develop him, only the people around him who were affect by him during the time he was alive, and i thought that was brilliant, BUUUT in the end we get a Simone that i honestly did not like to see, i mean yes he matured into a badass, yes he became the savior of the galaxy, but its a Simone that never left Kaminas shadow no matter how much better of a person he actually turned out to be, because of course he would turn out better than Kamina he stayed alive and the possibilities were endless, even Kamina had a lot to learn that he never got the chance to because he died, and that for me is what i feel like the problem is. It doesnt have to do with "oh are these characters good?" no no, it has to do with "what happens when a character that was really amazing dies and then is replaced by someone who has its mannerisms? will you find this character enjoyable to watch even if the story makes sense to its character?" i never found Simone interesting to watch ever since Kamina dies, I never found Yoko to be interesting after Kamina dies, i never found any other character to be interesting to watch after he died, and its not because the story doesnt make sense its because the story became unappealing to me once i figured out what they were gonna do with Simone and i was shit scared that it was gonna be really uninteresting and it turned out to be no matter how amazingly epic that series animation and OST is, without Kamina developing with the rest of the crew the show just felt empty I dont like the fact that Kamina becomes a symbol, i wanted Kamina the character to keep living and learning to become a better person because YES his logic was flawed and by the end of the series i realized i wanted to see that far more than whatever else i had seen (and we did see that but through SImon) because i believe not killing him would have given more characters place to grow by using other methods of story telling, heck they could have just have him out of the picture for a while or be serious injured and Simone would have to grow up as a leader because Kamina would be off for a while and then he could get a chance to see Simon grow into a possible badass and he himself would change thanks to that i just thought that would be so cool to see each other influencing one another through the series and possibly yoko having some of her character develop into an even more enjoyable person to watch to make it simple, imagine if in One Piece Luffy died and in order to finish the series youd have to have another member of the straw hat be the captain or simply have the crew split apart and later regroup to finish the journey luffy started, do we think that would be fun? who knows, but best guess is no, because one piece is written to be the story of how awesome this pirate group is and you'll get to see them be badasses through a long epic series and for such an epic looking show i was incredibly sad to find out they decided to not do that because im pretty sure i would have enjoyed a lot more the last scene if it was not only simone but also kamina and yoko beating the crap out of the anti spiral boss ( and yes i know the scene is somewhat like that but im pretty sure if kamina was alive youd see both of them standing there being all bro love to one another and bare fist fighting the guy, and im sure that would have been epic as fuck ) edit: also i forgot to say it, but i do appreciate your answer because ive been living in a gurren laggan dilema ever since i watched it and i really wanna love it but the Simone problem doesn't allow me to, again, i appreciate your input

I like Gurren Lagann, but KLK's characters grabbed me more. The animation was more appealing to me, and the plot connected with me more. I do have bias, as KLK was the first anime I watched, but looking back, I really do feel that KLK has a more impactful plot, with more memorable characters.
