Wiyathul Lyrics (English Translation):
Two scrub fowl crying out
Looking for Gulwalŋa
The calls like women crying
Looking for Murrurrŋawu
The cries returning his mind
To the jungles at Mutjmutjŋa
Oh place Gulwalilŋa
Warraḏika
Yumayŋa
Oh the old man cries, from this drink
Oh dad Kampa-Djuŋadjuŋa
Home Mayaŋ-ŋaraka bright in his mind
Oh my two mums, beloved mums
Hold Ruypu Milinditj
Oh my two mums, beloved mums
Cry for the sacred spring Burarrapu
Oh the place Gulwalŋa
Warraḏika,
Yumayŋa
Gurrumul performing Wiyathul Live in 2008.
About Gurrumul:
Born blind, the Indigenous Australian singer/songwriter Gurrumul grew up as a member of the Gumatj clan on Elcho Island, off the coast of tropical North East Arnhem land in Australia’s Northern Territory. Gurrumul’s songs speak of identity, spirit, connection with the land, the elements and the ancestral beings to whom he is related. His fragile but uniquely emotive high tenor voice and aura-like persona elicit feelings of peace and longing in listeners.
Gurrumul first came to the world’s attention when his self-titled debut album Gurrumul was released to international acclaim in 2008. His angelic voice connected with fans the world over, including such notable names as Elton John, will.I.am, Sting, Gary Barlow, Quincy Jones and Stevie Wonder. Half a million copies of Gurrumul have been sold worldwide.

I saw gurrumul at woodford folk festival long before anyone had heard of him. I was walking through the festival and heard the most beautiful voice I had ever seen. I went into the tent and there were aboriginal dancers doing a corroborree. His voice was so beautiful I had tears running down my face and I wasn't the only one.

It's the colour of our heart, not the colour of our skin that matters. I know aboriginals that are more aussie than some Aussies & I know Aussies who are more aboriginal than some aboriginals. I'm both & I found in my experience skin colour doesn't count for much. I've been accepted & rejected by aboriginals, & I've been accepted & rejected by Aussies. I know aussie farmers & Aussies in general who care more about the land & native wildlife than the local aboriginals. I have a personal rule I follow which is walk away & try to avoid anyone who can only see the colour of mine or anyone else's skin.

In my 70 years I have listened to many beautiful songs - and this one absolutely tops the list by miles - many, many ! So haunting, so beautiful & just makes you reconnect with the earth! I don't know how to say this - but when I listen to this, I feel like I'm sitting next to God.

I had the privilege of seeing him live in Sydney in 2011. Sadly he isn't that well known in the UK where I come from. Went to the Opera House and wanted to see a show and thought he sounded worth listening to. Boy was I right. Sitting in the gods listening to him sing and play is something I will never forget. May your spirit rest easy you great bloke.

So beautiful that the other instruments, as beautifully played as they are, seem to intrude on the majesty of Gurrumul's performance.
