Agree with Gus. 1. An NRL player can't sign with another club 2 years out, but can somehow do so with another code. 2. During that time, the player gets ample resources thrown at them (particularly if young), for learning and development. It would likely deprive another player in terms of time, effort and finance. This is relevant if the skill set required is close to that of another sport. 3. If you magnify no.2 above and find that under-18 players start to do the same, the economics can start to be exponential to the detriment of feeder club, the NRL team and the NRL itself. It's different if the player shifts to another NRL club, because arguably the players "stock/profile" is still within the NRL ecosystem. 4. The player managers (like in most sports), who's only incentive is the green dollar, will look to exploit ever cross code opportunity to get their client (and thereby themselves) a large payday. We've already seen this with AFL, and Union. Don't expect this to change anytime.

29:28 they did the same thing in the NFL to protect quarterbacks. Since they did that, what used to be a career year is now the bare minimum. Guys used to dream of throwing 300 yards 3 tds a game now that’s pretty much standard for the good ones. 5000 yards and 35+ touchdowns used to be a dream season. Now virtually everyone does that. Can’t over protect playmakers it ruined the game.

I’ve got no problems with Joey going to union. The real problem is that Australian athletes are paid peanuts. It’s ridiculous the fact is $1.6million a year should be a rookie contract. Guys like Joey and Alfie or more recently JT and billy slater should have earnings that classifies as generational wealth. Their kids don’t need to work. If you’re in a top 25 in the nrl you’re inside the top 1000 players on earth in either rugby league or union. Can anyone tell me a single profession on earth where you can be the top 1000 on the entire planet and your bare minimum pay isn’t in the millions.

Gus is acting like he was the only one that had an idea that Suaalii would eventually leave 🙄 Suaalii has been transparent with the Roosters and has been candid in the fact the he'd like to represent Samoa for League and Wallabies for Union from the very beginning. Gus is arrogant and ignorant and he thinks his opinions are superior. Players are not your property to discard at your will. Contracts are signed for players and clubs mutual benefit, it's a two way streak. Don't disrespect this young man by undervaluing his contribution to Rugby League/Roosters or his Potential in Rugby Union.

20:55 rugby might be the major sport in the pacific area. However the Tongan and Samoan success is changing that, and while the Tongans s and Samoans are being successful in rugby league they’re getting pillaged of all their talent by the all blacks. The ones that stay with their national team, have to pay to play. More than a couple Tongan players have admitted at their last tour of Europe they had to pay for their own flights and accommodation for that tour. That’s ridiculous. Rugby league needs to get into those areas turn the likes of toumalolo and co in to gods among men and build up the schools and the local communities to turn rugby league into the major sport there. Then guess what. Rugby has Australia, New Zealand, France, South Africa, England and Ireland. While rugby league will have Australia, New Zealand, England, Tonga, Samoa, Fiji and PNG. Which makes rugby league a far more legitimate international game, and virtually all the talent in the all blacks and even the wallabies comes what will be rugby league strong holds. Which will weaken rugby is Australia and New Zealand
