2 little hints: 1 - pressing X will cancel any missile/super/grapple etc selection you have and restore the beam to the currently selected shot. I acc rebind X to Select and vice versa in the game’s options menu 2 - the hint for exploding the tube in Maridia is another already exploded tube in the adjacent room. It’s a little cryptic, and I think even a small crack in the main tube could’ve helped signal it a bit better, but a hint does exist I hope these help!

Another hint for the tube is in the demo for waiting on the title screen. It shows you that you can do that at all very explicitly. By todays standards it may not be the best way but it certainly gets the job done and it may have been better closer to the games release.

You actually don't have to repeatedly press Select in order to reequip the beam; On the standard controller mapping Y cancels your item selection, which lets you shoot with the beam immediately. But yes, following titles address the whole item selection hassle and let you quickly swap between beam and missiles. I think Super Metroid is pretty great but I have two main issues: 1. Doors aren't marked on the map, making it unclear which rooms are connected and which lead to dead ends. 2. Having Jump, Shoot and Run all on face buttons is extremely uncomfortable because you might want to use any of the three in any combination (pressing X and B at the same time sucks). For my second playthrough I mapped Run to R and that was way more enjoyable but now I couldn't aim diagonally down anymore. The controls just are to complex for the SNES controller and work better on one with 4 shoulder buttons. Anyways, looking forward to your thoughts on Fusion and Zero Mission!
@LukerYT3 жыл бұрын
Wow I never even thought about checking or doing that, goes to show I need to keep looking at the games a little more in-depth in case, so thank you for the correction! I'm also glad someone feels the same way about the doors, I've played Fusion in brief and already I feel that the map in that game has been perfected (as well as now learning about the different item selection system on that game too). Thank you for your continued support!
@Flea_ip3 жыл бұрын
@@LukerYT Your face when one of your biggest complaints about the game was already solved by the developers with a single button press ;) I do agree that the map system in Fusion and Zero Mission are much better than Super. But, to me, this feels like the same type of comparison as comparing Super to its previous installments. I'm sure in 1994, when those of us who are old enough (oh... wow... I'm old), CELEBRATED the fact that we had a map AT ALL and found that to be SO MUCH better than the no-map of Metroid and Metroid 2. So, it stands to reason that Quality of Life improvements will happen in future games over previous ones. Honestly, my biggest issue with the Super Metroid map is that you can only view the map of the area you're currently in, as opposed to being able to look at any area's map at any time. So yeah, Fusion's map is truly excellent, and has a lot of QoL improvements over Super, but that is to be expected. Still loved the video though, been looking forward to this one for weeks!
@Darkkfated3 жыл бұрын
@@LukerYT It's funny because it's actually a really important button - being able to select either missiles or super missiles with 1 or 2 quick button presses then swap immediately back to your beam with the single press of a different button makes combat so much more fluid. Unfortunately, when you're looking at the Button Map settings BEFORE YOU'VE EVEN PLAYED THE GAME, like most people, you don't really know what "Item Select" and "Item Cancel" do or where they're going to be most comfortable to use for you personally. Most people also don't realize you can make a save, reset the game, and go back into your save file and edit the buttons whenever you want! Also, button map settings ON AN SNES GAME is pretty incredible, how many SNES even let you do that? Not many. Lastly, you're in luck: every game from this point on came up with a much better control method for both swapping to missiles/power bombs AND diagonal aiming. This was mostly due to the necessity of needing to find a way to make Super's controls work on the 2-face-button, 2-shoulder-button GameBoy Advance (for Metroid Fusion and Zero Mission).

This game has many secrets to it. Some of them you can find out by sitting at the title screen and letting some footage of the game play, some of them have been addressed in other comments, such as electrocuting Draygon. The three little aliens are somewhere near Brinstar, they teach you how to wall jump. You get there by doing what the emu looking alien does and speed boosting in the room he's in which will make you run over a set of tiles, dissolving them. You'll fall down into a seemingly inescapable hole. The three little aliens will be there and will teach you how to wall jump. Also, use the X-ray scope everywhere. Super Metroid is one of the few games that doesn't under utilize an item like that. The speed boost can actually be stored and be used to boost jump. After you've gotten up to speed, crouch. That'll store the energy and you can jump in any direction, which causes Samus to more or less fly. You can utilize this ability in many different places, especially outside near your ship. Super Metroid was a massive part of my childhood. It's always great to see people experience this masterpiece work of art for the first time.

Even if you miss the initial broken tube in Maridia that hints maybe you need something strong to break it, curiosity should always be your go-to skill in any game. And that means trying everything in your arsenal periodically to see if something has changed since the initial discovery. 13:07 I- It has never occured to me just how cryptic that might be. As a kid, despite being born in the 2000's I only had an nes and an atari to play for my early gaming experiences. One of these was Zelda II, which is easily the most labrynthian game I've ever played. But most importantly for my Super Metroid experience, is that before playing *any* metroid games (the nes version being my first and least favourite by far for 2D metroid), I had played through every zelda game out at the time (which I believe the latest release at the time was Spirit Tracks on the DS) and particularly due to the original LoZ and oracle of ages, I'd developed a habit of bombing just about everything. Good catch as I'm sure lots of others who played super metroid-especially on release likely also had this ingrained into them somewhat by the era.

And it doesn't feel like a SNES game to be honest, the game's world is huge (I found myself to be constatly surprised by "oh...There's even more??" every single time I found a new area of the map), the duration of the game is quite high if you don't make use of guides, certanly quite longer than most games back then and long enough to be acceptable for even new games made in 2021. Great job m8! Also, little note: When you talk about Draygon and how you have to learn to dodge his attacks, there's a much more easy way to kill him. If you get grabbed by Draygon and use the Grapple Beam to attach yourself to one of the opened electric blocks, you will electrocute Draygon to death in a few seconds. Another nice detail from the developers rewarding smart gameplay.

There are actually a number of hints in the game about power bombing the tube in Maridia. 1: The game forces you through it a number of times, telling you it's important so you commit it to memory (it's also the only glass tube in the entire game). 2: There's a room you are forced to travel through a little earlier, not too far away, which has a broken tube, dropping a massive clue. 3: If you look at the map, you can see that room has explorable areas directly above and below it. 4: At the point in time when you are required to break the tube, the power bomb is your most recent upgrade, so you should already be thinking "okay now where can I use this?".

I'll be honest, my impression of Super was tainted a bit by later games. I wanted to play the most up-to-date versions in timeline order, so I started with Zero Mission, then played AM2R after that (Samus Returns wasn't out yet). In comparison, Super feels kind of dated, janky, and slow. In particular, the movement was just generally unwieldy, the map was just vague enough that you never quite knew if there was more to find or not, exploration through Lower Norfair was super confusing, and more than anything, the way Samus turns invisible when hit, basically destroying any chance you had at accurately maneuvering out of your potentially deadly situation, was absolutely teeth-clenching at times. It's a remarkable improvement over its predecessors, and is excellent in comparison to what came before, and in the context of its time. As a modern game, it's a pretty good retro experience, and a gem of gaming and speedrunning history, but I hesitate to give it too much more than that.

top notch vid m8. u can press the Y button to get back to ur beams when uv got ur missiles equipped. Also Maridia is where the game stops holding ur hand and becomes a little more confusing, respect the opinion tho. Also the animals teach u how to walljump and shinespark. I would love to see u sequance break the game because thats where the fun comes from on 2nd and third playthrougfhs. (Im currently on my 18th playthrough lol)

Ah thanks for the correction! I can't believe I didn't once even encounter that at all about the item cancel haha Yeah Maridia is definitely a lot more open-ended, I tended to get lost quite a lot in there :P I believe I encountered the ostrich-style animal who taught me to Shinespark, but unfortunately I didn't meat the Wall Jump creatures - I dind't even know how to wall jump until Zero Mission haha But I'm definitely looking forward to coming back to it at some point! You think Super was great? Imagine having grown up having played both the NES Metroid and the GameBoy sequel (on an original monochrome GameBoy to boot) extensively. As in, having beat both games multiple times and having gotten the best endings for both, having hand-drawn maps on a pad of graph paper for reference, and so on. Then Super Metroid comes out and you and your dad go to Toys 'r' Us and pick up a copy on Saturday, and you sit down at suppertime to play it and next thing you know, it's 9 AM the next day and everyone else is waking up and asking, "You're still playing? When did you go to bed?" I didn't. I played that game for like 15 hours straight and only quit because my Dad wanted to make his own save file, not because I was tired of playing. I don't care what anyone says, Super Metroid is one of the best games ever made. Not just "one of the best SNES games". No caveats, one of the greatest of all time. Are there some niggles with the controls? Yes. Is cycling through your arsenal a bit cumbersome? Yes. Do some people prefer the snappier jump physics in Fusion/Zero Mission? Yep. Does any of that matter much compared to the amazing soundtrack, immaculate sprite work, the challenging and screen-filling Bosses, and near-perfect map design? Absolutely not. The only real "problem" with Super Metroid is that it's so good that they've never been able to do better. Hell, you can argue that there are only a select few Metroidvanias that even come close to matching it at all (Symphony of the Night, Hollow Knight, Ori maybe?) so most post-Super Metroidvanias end up disappointing you in some way once you've experienced this one.

You have an awesome sense of humor and a good perspective, so I did like Jerry and grew oregano!... and subbed, of course. I'm relatively new to metroid (two to three years ago) and i just... love the franchise with all it's faults. It was a good gush video, and i also respect the fact that you left time to acknowledge super's issues (though the one with the marydia power bomb access? apparently foreshadowed by a room nearby with a pre-broken tube.) I just beat samus returns today so I'm much looking forward to that (and, I'll admit, to AM2R, sorry not sorry)
@LukerYT3 жыл бұрын
Haha thank you so much! Glad Jerry could be a trendsetter for so many people :p That's a good point about Maridia's foreshadow, I saw it in the footage after I'd written the script but still somewhat stood by what I said - your point is very true though, I'll have to get a bigger brain for next time :P Oh wow, hope you enjoyed that one! When I eventually get to it & the other remake, I'll certainly be interested to see how both of them do :D

Yayyy!! Been waiting for this one! But feels bad when the solution to your complaint about the weapon cycling was already included in the game, and you just apparently hadn't realized/found it. But man this game is NEAR perfection. I recognize there are a few things about the game that are objectively bad, but I find it very easy to wave off complaints about the game from people who only played it after the later installments, or that are actually solved by in-game features that the player just hasn't found yet. But man I love this game, it's an absolute masterpiece and I can hardly believe how well it's aged. This game has aged far better than even a lot of games from the GameCube or Wii era. Really a testament to how amazing it is (though it was sad to hear about the crunch development... that super sucks)
@LukerYT3 жыл бұрын
Gahhh that's so frustrating! I really need to take a step back and look before I write because that would be such an easy thing to check, apologies! I agree for sure though, the SNES is in the perfect point where it's the pinnacle of a generation that never necessarily ages, & I imagine it + others will live on for the betterment of it too! And yeah the crunch culture is something still sadly so pervasive in the games industry, I really hope we see some pushback from employees/developers being exploited for their passion for gaming as games as an art form is truly one of the best!

Judging on your comments on lack of hint to break the tube to enter Maridia I think your review missed an important point that you just skimmed with Old Mother Brain room locking you up to force you to grab morph ball. Like someone else said there was in fact a hint when you enter Maridia through the east ocean after defeating Phantoon and getting Gravity Suit. Super Metroid is in fact littered with context hints and other narration / tutorials through gameplay only. When you get into Green Brinstar there is a bridge that collapse if you don't sprint while traversing it, this room is meant to teach you to use the run button, you can't go back because there is a wave gate blocking you, you have to know how to sprint to progress. When you reach the top of Red Brinstar you're locked between yellow doors, you can't progress or go back, you're meant to find your first power bombs there. The entrance to Lower Norfair that you can just peak through by using morph ball but can't enter until you have Space Jump is a huge Ridley's head statue. The escape from Grapple Beam room that require you to experiment with the item right away, similar to the Speedbooster Lava Trap, or the Ice Beam exit. And you should really try to encounter those animals you saved at the end during your playthrough, they will teach you a few other tricks ;)
@LukerYT3 жыл бұрын
I actually struggled with a lot of the additional things you mentioned at first, I was just too embarrassed to share some of them (like the bridge collapsing thing, which took me a while to learn what to do) :P But I really appreciate how Super Metroid does mitigate a lot of unnecessary 'exploration' by closing off sections so you can't find yourself completely off-base from what you need to be doing or where you need to be. I'm looking forward to coming back to it at some point and taking it in for a second run-through :D
@kypdurron3 жыл бұрын
@@LukerYT I think the game is made for a second playthrough, you're meant to sequence break some of those obstacles once you learn how to wall jump and shinespark. You can circumvent areas where you should use High Jump Boot or Grapple using both these tricks and reduce the need to backtrack. Then there is still a few tricks that can open other areas earlier and are clearly intended like Infinite Bomb Jump, Wall Jump into Morph Ball airborne, Crystal Flash to replenish health in heated rooms. Some of those tricks are only demo'ed in the intro gameplay sequence once there is a save file with the ending cleared.

When you get around to the Prime games, do yourself a favor and play them via the Prime Trilogy version. They add a lot of quality of life features not in the gamecube games.
@LukerYT3 жыл бұрын
I have that on the Wii U thankfully! Though part of me wonders if I get the most 'authentic' experience playing the original over playing the refined version, I'll sit on it and think about it, thank you!👍
@JacobNintendoNerd993 жыл бұрын
@@LukerYT Generally speaking, the Trilogy versions are all closer (though not identical to) the Japanese releases. And this is crucial since during development of Prime 2/Prime 3, the previous installments’ international releases were disregarded and they were based on the lore and gameplay of the Japanese versions. So there’s a good chunk of things that just aren’t gonna make sense with the gamecube releases, especially when you get to Prime 3. And there’s some other things too like the Spring Ball being added into the Wii releases, and Samus Returns/Dread taking a few aspects specific from the Wii primes.
