From the new work: "Fantasy on Six Early Gustav Mahler Songs" here is song #1, Fruhlingsmorgen. This could be considered an exceedingly liberal orchestration, in that there quite a few added measures (including transitions) and msc. counterpoint added to the original. The ending is also different and longer. Working with Mahler's writing is always an act of love, and though he was young when he wrote this work (about 22 yrs.) the music handles perfectly. In general, I don't like orchestrations originating from piano work, because the music becomes so much larger and fuller, it requires changes in the pacing--so that transitions, introductions, endings and whatnot require much more time to evolve. Therefore an "orchestration" becomes a "Fantasy." That is the case here. Obviously, in a work like this, all of the new work should fall completely in line with the old, so the presentation becomes seamless. The listener cannot tell original from new.
