At my local elementary school, the PTO replaced the much-needed walkie-talkies. There was a mandate to put metal detectors in all of the schools as a safety measure. However, the ability for faculty to maintain communication is not a high priority. It makes no sense.

I worked 25 years in the public school system. Students were on their phones CONSTANTLY. Teachers did nothing to stop the phones being out during classes. I saw teachers doing little teaching in classes because they couldn’t compete with the phones. I’ve been retired for 8 years now. I totally can understand why students learn nothing in school anymore and I’m glad to be retired. It’s so sad what the schools have become: just a daycare service, regardless of the grade level.

When I was in school, I seen many teachers passing students who shouldn’t have passed onto the next grade level just so they wouldn’t have to deal with them. I’m talking about the kids that never did work or were almost never in school. Some were in school but were always extremely disruptive.

I see this happen with truly so many kids, countless kids in my area, and they attend the only good schools in our area where you have to beat the lottery system to get into them, and many of them are not even legal citizens or are first generation and the horrible aspect of this is that American kids, white, black or Asian cannot get into these schools because they are full of the Hispanic kids, and the regular schools are so so dangerous because of the gangs and toxic culture. So the only good schools your kids cant get into and the kids that are there don't even deserve to be there going off of merit and citizen status at least. The whole system is corrupt.

After being in the education system for 25 years, and being raised as a low social economic status, my mother did not have high school diploma but everyone of her six children have degrees. I can assure you it’s not poverty that keeps students from excelling. After teaching high and middle school for 15 years, it was becoming more and more difficult to teach because the disciplinary action for students with serious behaviors, was no longer being implemented. I saw students, threatening and cussing out teachers and destroying things, and the principal could no longer expel or suspend the student. Because California laws protected these defiant kids. Teachers no longer felt safe at the school. kids would come to school super high on drugs, and there was a little to nothing that they could be telling about it. I can go on and on and on about why schools are failing. I believe that states need to be made accountable if they fail in the education department. Who would be monitoring whether or not schools in that state are doing their job?

I’m a retired Indiana teacher. You are absolutely correct about the scores declining. Programs that were working (Reading Recovery) and other researched-based curriculum were scrapped for being “too costly.” Meanwhile, the district found $$$$ to hire a DEI consultant with a doctorate.

Our school, like many others, gets funding according to attendance. Rather disgusting, add to it the way they conduct teacher/student relationship, the heads of boards that create the lessons, it's all BROKEN! Is it TOO MUCH to ask the states to pick up the slack BEFORE we abolish the DOE? Abolishing the DOE without a plan is going to be disruptive to millions of families across America. Pell grants, FAFSA, student loans, Special Needs funding, and others. A LOT of people will be affected. Now...I KNOW that some states will NOT be able to absorb all the benefits the current DOE dishes out, but we need those states advertised. You can guess which states can and cannot make room for education funding.

I agree with Chris Como on parental influence on child's educationmore than schools. But, good teachers do play an important role in steering the child in the right academic fields,especially sciences. The emphasis on hiring highly qualified teachers needs to be prioritized plus re- considering about text books will help to come up with a better option.

Parents need to be given the states’ common core standards when their child is born. Most parents think kids just need to learn letter names by the end of Kinder, for example. No, now you’ve started their entire academic career with them being two years behind indefinitely.
