I could see it going well with cheese for sure. This flavor was so good. I know we are basically at the limits for year round outdoor growth in our zone, but I think overwintering indoors could make it work in yours. :)

funny story for you. Years ago we were in the car and a friend's little kid saw a bag of figs my dad had. He asked "What are those?" My mom said "They're figs" He looked at her and thought for a minute and then said "What do you have against the Newton?" hahahahah he was probably 5 or 6 at the time ahahhahaa.

Ha! That is awesome. You know, I don’t actually care for fig newtons very much. Lol But these figs, on the other hand… :)

Wow I’m so amazed that you are growing fig tres. That is one of the main and abundantly present fruit trees in the coast lines of Croatia, where I am from. You just walk along the Village streets and you can pick them. When my husband came with me for the first time many years ago, he couldn’t believe it. Thank God we came right during the time of harvest so he was eating figs all day and we prepared in many different ways. I wasn’t even thinking that I could successfully grow here in South Florida because of all the humidity year-round around. But you have got me inspired and I will buy to grow it on my small balcony. Thank you so much for your inspiration

Fresh figs ARE the best! I'm hoping to get some eventually from the 2 trees I have growing. But one of them needs to move to a better location.

I was so surprised by the taste. It was nothing like anything I have had from the store. If we had just a little warmer climate, I think multiple varieties here would be a really good thing. How long have you had your figs?

@@GutenGardening One has been in the ground since about 2005 but never produced. BUT, in 2007 Hurricane Matthew dropped a big oak tree on it and it took a month with a chainsaw to find it. It hasn't been the same since.

We have a Chicago hardy fig. We brought it inside last fall all the leaves fell off while it was outside last summer. Thinking maybe it didn't like the full sun we bring it side keep it in the house all winter strange the plant started to grow like crazy, but I moved it to a different spot around the Christmas holiday season so it would not get knock over but it began to look dead now the leaves dried up and died and the branches are brown now. Help not sure what to do now.

That fig tree probably though 'oh no! something's happening and I might die! better ripen up these first 2 fruits asap just in case.'

We didn't take our Chicago hardy Fig tree indoors last winter, but in retrospect, I think we should have. It died back all the way to about an inch from soil level and now it's finally putting out new branches and leaves, it grew so fast last season and at the rate it's going it will be a decent size by the time the leaves turn yellow and fall off, but this year I will be sure to have a place for it in the indoor winter garden. *WARNING* the critters raided our fig tree several times last year just as the figs were ripening. At least we did get to harvest a few, I like the strawberry jam like flavor/consistency.
@GutenGardening
@GutenGardening 3 жыл бұрын
That is the exact consistency! Thank you for putting into words what I couldn’t. We will definitely protect it then, thanks to your advice. I think you are right. With a good mulching, it might be fine, but even so, we will bring ours in at least to the garage, I think. Thank you so much for the advice! Have a wonderful evening!

My two Chicago Hardy figs are a year old now, but both seem to be branching out at soil level instead of growing upward. They have both suffered from fig rust, which is currently being treated again. What would you do to encourage more vertical growth for better airflow?

So…a Chicago hardy fig can’t actually be planted outside? What do they call it that?
@GutenGardening
@GutenGardening 2 жыл бұрын
Hello Liz, Yes, it can be planted outside, if you plan to mulch it deeply over winter, but we don't want it to grow too large, and so we keep it growing in a container. :)
