I’m a subscriber to the millennial Gardner as well. I haven’t cut my figs back. They aren’t as tall as yours. I’m going to look at them again. Not feeling confident.😬

When I watched that Millennial Gardener video, one of the things that stuck out to me was that he talked about how (when the plant is dormant) you are looking at a plant that is strong and will take a good pruning well. But I think you can definitely decide in the next year as well. :)

Sensible pruning advice for your climate, of course we have to do it a bit different here as our summers are generally too short and too cool for main crop fig production so we have to prune for brebas 😁
@GutenGardening3 жыл бұрын
Yes, I remember you talking about some of that from your earlier videos, and I can definitely appreciate the need for different pruning styles. The main crop we had this year on our first year plant really surprised me, so I think our summers are a good fit for that. I hope all is well and that you had a wonderful Christmas.

Is it better to get a seedling young plant or one that they sell in a 3 gallon pot?

Good information here…did you root the cuttings? If you had the space, you could’ve waiting until early Spring to prune, and root the cuttings then…that way you don’t have to maintain them all winter. Figs are so much fun to grow!

Hello Bill, Yes we did root the cuttings. That is a video that won't come out for a while though as we want to share the process and the results all in one video. :) They are so much fun to grow. Since we are already growing all winter long, adding them to grow room area is pretty straight forward for us. :) Have a wonderful week, and thank you for the comment!

I have an attached garage in zone 5 (near Madison, WI) but it isn't fully insulated. Could I put a hardy fig in a pot in my unheated garage?

I still haven't found the right spot in my yard for my figs. But on the bright side, they seldom go dormant. (They also seldom produce fruit).
@GutenGardening3 жыл бұрын
Now that we have two figs, we are going to have to do a little more in the way of calculations as to how we want to place them, but we are going to keep them at a size we want for sure. Do you prune yours every year?
@geekygardens3 жыл бұрын
@@GutenGardening So far mine haven't gotten big enough to prune - they've had a hard life. A few years ago the original was under a fallen oak tree for about a month, til I found it again.

I’m in West Bend. Where are you at? I got 2 Olympian early summer. I’ve got a detached garage. I’m worried they’ll freeze out this winter.
@GutenGardening2 жыл бұрын
We are in southern Wisconsin, so you are somewhat north and then east of us. I don't think it will freeze out in your garage, but we have not grown Olympian figs before. I believe they have a somewhat similar hardiness to Chicago Hardy figs.

I moved them to the basement. I’ve got an old cistern converted to a room. Put a vent in the window. The room stayed in the 40’s. Took them out March 15th. Full of figs and leaves bigger than my hand already!

When you keep it in your garage are you providing lights or is it OK to just leave it in the dark? Thanks & may the force be with you.
@GutenGardening3 жыл бұрын
Great question! You don't really need light since there are no leaves during dormancy. We will have a little bit of light from a window, but the cool temps will keep it dormant. Have a wonderful rest of your week!

@@GutenGardeningHow cold does your garage get? Mine is attached to my house so two walls are insulated but the rest is not. I am worried that is too cold. I am zone 5 near Madison, WI.

How was your watering schedule over the winter for this fig? I got a Chicago Hardy late summer of 2022 and I’m not confident in my care over the winter. I’m in northern IL zone 5 as well so I am happy for your videos. So many are not my same zone!

What happened to this beautiful fig after pruning it during dormancy? Did it fruit the following year/summer? Btw, I love your videos😊

I really want a fig tree but ughhh. I have no space to bring it in during the winter.
@GutenGardening3 жыл бұрын
The Chicago Hardy Fig can survive pretty cold temps (in ground) with a good mulch, so you might look into that as well, but you would definitely have to keep it well pruned depending on how much space you had outside as well. :)
