How to KEEP ladybugs Alive in your Garden | Ladybugs eat APHIDS
Ladybugs are an amazing addition to any garden space, and in this video we address some of the ways you encourage ladybugs to enter your garden, and perhaps even more importantly, to have them stay and thrive in your garden.
We provide you with three easy steps to keeping our ladybirds happy and healthy using supplies that you likely already have around the house.
We answer the question, "What do ladybugs eat?" We show you how to build a simple ladybug habitat, and we show you how to keep the ladybugs hydrated.
These simple steps will help to encourage the ladybugs to stay in your garden (indoor or out) and continue to eat the aphids and other soft-bellied pests that attack the garden.
Thanks for watching.

@@GutenGardening 8:28 lady bugs are absolutely not invasive, Asian lady beetles are. The ones taking over people's homes are Asian lady beetles. Even looking at a pic it can be hard to discern, so anyone saying they know it was lady bugs is 95% mistaken lol All of the ones pictured from your garden photos were lady bugs btw, I just meant the people you spoke about having complained about finding them around their house haha cheers for some great info! Currently snagging a bug house off Amazon cuz I'm lazy, and already have some nectar from nature's good guys haha did you use store bought or raw honey? I'm gonna see which they like more. Funny enough, natures good guys recommend honey in an email to me after I contacted them 🤣

Thanks for your informative video! I just released a few hundred ladybugs because of mites and followed your instructions with a couple of modifications. They seem to be staying on the plants that I sprayed with water, but in addition I have pollen that I dusted on the plants, and instead of a toilet paper roll I used small hollow bamboo logs and hung those on vines (just for aesthetics). One thing that I noticed though was that when I added pure honey, they got stuck in it and couldn't move! So I watered down the honey and they flocked to it readily.

When my nieces were 3 and 5 years old, they were both on a soccer team. One day as they played, one of the little girl players squealed with delight, "LadyBug!!!!!" All the other little girls from both teams ran to see it. They all crowded around the Ladybug and all competition was gone in lieu of LadyBug appreciation, wonder and awe. I love what you presented here. Super informative. I have a very mild mealy bug situation here and my ladybugs are arriving tomorrow. We had a terrible huge aphid invasion on our young cherry tree (it produces lots of dark red cherries). last year we used chemical pesticides and result was actually perfect and got lots of fruit but later we decided not to use chemicals ever (when noticed their harms) and the result was quite disappointing at first with tons of aphids and whole curved leaves. But when I was about to start thinking checmicals are a must, I noticed a small bug on a leave near an aphid colony. seemed it wanted to attack aphids but ants were disturbing, then after some search, I found out these are ladybug larves (tbh, it's very different with adult ladybug). Now after about a week, there are larves all over the tree and I think fall of aphids empire is very close :)
@GutenGardening
@GutenGardening 3 жыл бұрын
That is a fantastic story. We don't use pesticides either, and I know the pests can be frustrating, but when the ladybugs come to stay, the end results can be outstanding. I will also say that I think the ladybug larvae look alien-like. The first time I saw them I was shocked. I couldn't believe that they would be able to eventually transform into ladybugs. If you check out our short on the life cycle of the ladybugs, it is a really neat process to see. :) Have a wonderful weekend, and good luck taking down the evil aphid empire! :)

My daughter bought me a lady bug house! I've released 2 containers of lady bugs in a plant right below it. It had aphids on it. Watching your video l now know l didn't release them correctly. If l get more lady bugs should l put them inside the house with the food,water and shelter like you described or find another plant with aphids on it and release.l believe a lot flew away because l didn't do my research before they came. My granddaughter was so excited when l told her about getting the lady bugs and when she came there were only a few for her to see. I think l also saw some mating if that's possible!😅 The plant,pot and the lady bug house are on the top deck. There's plenty of shelter in the large pot. I was wondering if it could have been too hot. It's a large verbena. Thank you so much for your video! I told my husband no more lady bugs till l went down the rabbit hole of being a good lady bug parent 😅 lf you respond about my LB house that would be great! Thank you for the great information. What brought me to YT to search on "How to relocate lady bugs:, is; my yard is filled with weeds that the lady bugs love. I am pulling the weeds in preparation to mow. While I am relocating the ones hokding on to a weed, i noticed many are also in the grass. I don't want to kill them. I was thinking of maybe starting the mower and then turning it off and wait for them to scatter, but what if they don't scatter, but crawl deeper in the grass instead? After watching your video, I will hang honey in the area they can live in forever, to try to attract them to that area. I am moving the weeds they love, to that area as i pull them. I could use suggestions for a more assertive, technic i can feel more more confident about.

We want to use this on a small, potted Japanese Maple that is outside. How do you keep flys from going after the honey if we make the little house for them or misquotes from the constant moist paper towel? Any ideas?
@GutenGardening
@GutenGardening 3 жыл бұрын
Hello Gail, Thank you for the question! From what I have seen, you may have some issues with flies, but from also read about other's experiences, it isn't supposed to be too big of a problem. As for the mosquitoes, as long as it is just a moist paper towel and not pooling water, you may have to change the papertowel out every week or so, but you should be okay. I know that ladybugs don't typically eat mosquitoes, but I have also read that many flowers that attract ladybugs repel mosquitoes, so that might also be something to keep in mind.

How do u keep lady bugs from flying away on an outside patio? Do I just make shelter, give them water on a paper towel and provide them with extra food ( will they then stay where I release them?) I have lost 3 plants to aphids and mites. And now I have them on my marigolds which I thought were bug resistant. Most of my plants our but I lost gorgeous petunias to aphids and a tropical to them a couple of weeks ago. I’m against pesticides 1) bc we have a bunch of wildlife that I love around my patio(lizards, frogs etc) so I’ve been using Neem Oil and it says that that would help kill them but it’s not working. So I’m at a loss. And I would love to get some more flowers but I’m scared bc I can’t lose anymore bc I consider them my plant babies. ( I just had a 6th stroke and my second heart valve replacement) and my patio with my plants and wildlife bring me so much joy. I went off a little there..main question is if I release them on an open patio will they stay around as long as I provide them with everything u mentioned in this video…

How do we maintain the aphids' ecosystem on our plants if 1. the next door neighbor has a pool that are collecting our drowning ladybugs and 2. we have sugar ants that also live on/under the affected trees that are attracted to the honey/raisins/bananas?
@GutenGardening
@GutenGardening Жыл бұрын
The pool is a problem we have not had to face before, and the ladybugs will definitely be attracted to that water. I really don't have a good solution, other than to say that if there is food and water readily available in your yard, some of them should stay. If only you could convince your neighbor to cover their pool, though I am sure that is unlikely. As to the ants, there is definitely going to be some competition there. I think the ladybugs will likely be feeding more on the aphids at first than the honey anyway; however, I have been reading up on ants a bit, and I found this article to be interesting about dealing with ants separately. www.organiclesson.com/cornmeal-ant-remedy/#:~:text=Cornmeal%20is%20one%20such%20ingredient,by%20swelling%20their%20digestive%20system.

Hello. We hope this message finds you are well and thriving in good spirits! 😊 Great video and gratitude for taking time to make & share with us. However, would i add honey re aphid infestation brought about by ants harvesting for food? Every year for the past 3 decades the sweetcorn, sunflowers, and nasturtium plants take a hard hit from the lil blighters; mean them no harm but got ladybirds here yet found we had to bring in some local larvae (tiny!) and apparently the ants that make it past the thick layers of vaseline will most definitely seek out the babies for destruction due to the sole purpose of protecting their food source. That much i can confirm as fact ✌🏾🐛🦋 I digress! What we're wondering is would honey or banana or fractions of dried mulberries soaked in distilled rainwater be wise as a food source for the beneficial insects if there are ants that we miss still around/on/in the/any plant that is a more black tone with few green areas, obviously loaded with their harvest/food source? Surely, that's going to draw them toward any/the larvae hideout inside their cardboard save haven? Have just released 10 in a paper envelope high up on plant with some paper shavings inside. Want to try your method though. Just glad am keeping 40 aside before making any other moves... your time is are valued & precious. Apologies re long interjection ✌🏾💫🐞🐌🌻🌾🌿🐝💐🍀

Great question! We have not tried to breed them to sell, and I believe you would need a good bit of space to do so in that large a quantity, though I know you can breed them in smaller numbers pretty easily. We have had lots of larvae from the ladybugs we have purchased online. I searched around a bit, and it seems like a good option might be to contact a place like Natures Good Guys to see what they might recommend. I hope that helps.

How do you get rid of the Asian ladybugs and bring in more native or convergent ones? Also try and bring in mealybug Ladybug destroyer. They are brown and with a copper head and a bit smaller.
@GutenGardening
@GutenGardening 2 жыл бұрын
Hello Rita, I have heard of the mealybug destroyer, and they look like they do a great job and would be helpful with citrus for sure. We have not really had a problem with Asian ladybugs in the past, so I will have to research more about the best way to get rid of them. Providing a good food source, though, I think is the best way to start attracting the convergent ladybugs. Since most of our issues with aphids have been indoors, we have had to import these ladybugs.

The asian ladybug/ 21 spot ladybug will do the same job as native lady bugs. They however do like to get into homes, have a stink about them if you squish or stress them, and can bite. Sadly there are so many and are here to stay. They have very similar needs so keep that in mind

Why does the purslane that I purchased at Lowes say not for human consumption
@GutenGardening
@GutenGardening Жыл бұрын
That's a great question and an important consideration when it comes to consuming purslane. While most varieties of purslane are edible and highly nutritious, there is a toxic look-alike plant called "spurge" that can be easily mistaken for purslane. This is why it's important to always positively identify any plant before consuming it, and to only consume purslane from a reputable source that specializes in edible varieties. Additionally, as you mentioned, some purslane plants sold at home improvement stores like Lowes may not be intended for human consumption, so it's important to do your research and source your food carefully. We hope this helps clarify the issue, and thank you for bringing it up!
