I lived in Manhattan for two years of college in the late 80's/early 90's and LOVED that city. As you wrote, it truly *was* "fun and exciting," and for a long time whenever I was required to list my favorite city for password backup questions & such, I've always put NYC. It brakes my heart to hear about what's become of that once-great metropolis. I'm not sure I would go back now even if I was paid to do so. I fear that it would be like seeing the love of your life from back in high school, forty years later when she's now a disaster and a life-depleted ghost of her former vibrant young self. A fond memory shattered.
