I'm realizing more and more that it's all a fun puzzle, and just a question of knowing and creatively inserting the right "pieces" (scale and chord tones) in the right places. The hammer-ons, pull-offs, use of open strings where possible, and vibrato are, as Guthrie put it, the "spices." Guthrie is a master of this (and I have to say, he made a fashion statement with that outfit and guitar together). Thanks so much Brett and Guthrie for this super-valuable lesson.

Great lesson. As I understand it since they are using the G mixolydian mode, that means that the parent scale is C. The G is the 5th note of the C scale and you basically use all of the notes of the C scale but you begin and end on G. This gives it a distinctive sound as the F is natural as opposed to being sharp in the G scale.
@karlwilson20215 жыл бұрын
Pretty much, but you can highlight any note in the G7 chord, the root, third or fifth... Also the flat seven (works really well going to the 4 chord)

I really, really like this video for so many reasons. First it's just nice to see a great acoustic jam - don't get me wrong I love my electrics - but we don't see acoustics jamming like this near enough. Second, it takes a simple concept of 3 chords and lets you play something cool over it - easy to make a loop and jam at home with those same chords. Third, it's modal - so it immediately sounds more interesting to your ear. It also made me realize there was a hole in my understanding of modes. Lastly as always I love how CAGED is always tied in as fundamental. Awesome job guys - I love how there are so many nuggets in here you can replay and follow along and learn so much.

Special thanks for these Trapp/Papa lessons. I've been breaking down Trapps solos looking at the CAGED inversions and the scales within them. I feel things are really opening up for me, wish I would have studied this stuff decades ago. Kinda confused about the chord progression F-C-G in the key of G. I've seen if before but never quite understood it. Don't want to over complicate things but I noticed G is 5th note from C, Mixolydian is 5th mode and Mixolydian shape is the same as the 5th major scale shape, related to the 5th major pentatonic shape. I understand modes are basically the major scale, just with certain "starting and ending" points. I'm just trying to look at it from different angles to make sense of it all. For now, I'll stick to the CAGED inversions and scales. Just wanted you guys to know I've been self taught, I love my guitar and have been stuck for so many years. I feel like I'm really learning something here. I might add my theory sucks but I think over the years of tinkering with the guitar I have developed a pretty good ear. Hoping with the ear and these lessons, my playing will take off. Thanks Papa, your playing has always amazed me.

I was watching some shredder video the other day, and to me at least, that isn't 'music,' it's fretboard calisthenics. If you aren't making the sweet notes prominent, you aren't making music, just showing that you can play fast. Guthrie is *the man* when it comes to melodic soloing.

Thanks Brett and Guthrie for the beautiful playing and ANOTHER fantastic lesson. I was struggling a bit to understand why if the progression contains C F G, why it wouldn't be considered to be in C major instead of G major, as C major scale has the F note in the scale. So is the reason you'd think of it as mixolydian simply because the way you're playing the progression makes G the tonal center instead of C?
@BrettPapa10 ай бұрын
Sure thing! Glad it helped!

So would you use the mixolydian in minor as well ? Just simply moving it up three frets. And also how do you know its the G mixolydian scale when you're not starting with the G chord, I showed this to a lot of people who have played guitar their whole life over 30 years and wouldn't have known to do that or even know how to know when you need to lol I thought I knew a lot of theory until I saw this lol

Isn't this scale just c major/a minor.
@aylbdrmadison10515 жыл бұрын
It would be C Major if the root was C, and A minor if the root was A. But the 1 chord (or root chord) here is G. Modes all work that way. If you know the key of C Major in all 7 positions, then you also know all of the modes in that key. www.efoza.com/postpic/2013/10/bass-guitar-major-scales-chart_323587.jpg
@garygowland47385 жыл бұрын
@@aylbdrmadison1051 ok but it's the key of G. And G has 1 sharp F#. And floating F# to F. That's the same as C major or you can call it C ionian. So G mixalydian is the same scale as C major why not just call C major which everyone knows rather than bring up modes which confuses most people. I understand moral theory I don't understand why they tried to make it more complicated.

I'm a little confused on why this would be called key of "G" I would think of it as "C" 4-1-5 with "G" Mixolydian being part of "C" Major. Just as D Dorian or A Minor are part of C Major. Maybe I'm overthinking this. Thanks for the Lesson, love it when you two get togerther. Chords=foundation, scales=shingles, penatonic=framework Ok I get this part
@billycockrell24705 жыл бұрын
I'm guessing because it seems to resolve to the g chord Everytime instead of the c. But, not sure. Fmaj isn't a cord tone of g. The f chord tone is supposed to be diminished in the key of g. Which is a Trainwreck. The progression they play sounds like a key change to me. But it's really cool!
@rizzymizzyspizzy5 жыл бұрын
I don't understand the extra leg work in thinking of being in G mixolydian mode (or any mode).... The progression is in the key of C major, the notes of G mixolydian mode are the same notes of C major.... Why not just look at it as playing in C major and target the chord tones for each chord?
@mbaaden5 жыл бұрын
Why is it G myxolydian?
@riwajrai5 жыл бұрын
Becoz Mixolydian is 5th degree of major scale as compared to the key, so in the key of C- G is 5th degree n it is a G mixolydian, also u can call it maj scale wid flat7.

Grt lesson papa n guthrie; but if iam not wrong, u guys must b in the key of C, as G mixolydian cant b played over G based home key.

If we're talking modes, I believe the key center is C, and they are actually playing F lydian(over F major chord) C major(Ionian)(over the C chord) G mixolydian (over G) which is all a C major scale.

Regarding the last portion of your comment. Yes you can play G mixolydian over G as a home key. In a blues in G for example, G7, C7 and D7 you can use G mixo over G7, C mixo over C7 and D mixo over D7. A lot of players do this, Matt Schofield comes to mind.

This kind of tons usage of mode makes it confusing n complicated. 😏🙄

@@riwajrai In can be, but learning how to use modes really opens up a lot. Many guitarists think modally and don't even know it. They just find the tones by ear, which is what Guthrie has done, and learned some theory afterwards.(to my knowledge)

What you should ask him next is how to develop the ear instrument connection.

I want to thank you for beginning with the flat 7 on the Mixolidian. That will confuse somebody that has no idea what you're talking about, but to me at least, Modes only made sense when I thought of them in terms of Interval differences. The good news is, it only takes ten minutes to memorize your Intervals. I strongly recommend it to anyone that hasn't done so. Once you know your Intervals, Modes are kind of self explanatory. Every other way of introducing one's self to Modes is a completely confusing clusterfuck, in my opinion. Once you understand that you are typically playing in a different Mode in order to account for an unnatural Chord/Note in a Chord Progression, it's really pretty basic. Why are we playing in Mixolidian? Usually because we've substituted or added a chord that doesn't typically belong in that Diatonic Chord group. In this case, G Major has the Chords, G, C, D, Em, Am, Bm and F#dim. Not F Major. So in order to account for the F Major, you're adding Natural F to the Scale, which happens to be a flated 7th, which happens to make it the Mixolidian Mode. It might take a several hours to memorize your Modes, but if you know your Intervals first (which, again, takes minutes not hours) the Modes won't be such a mystery.
