Another helpful video ...please keep these coming. Along the exact same lines of anticipating the III of the upcoming change, I like to notice the root down a half step to Nat 7 connects a I to V turnaround, and the fifth to sixth melody carries a I to IV chord change. In all those cases, it’s really great the way you point out the ways to look around, then, for the neighboring chord shapes, or fragments of those shapes, to orient on the other side of each change. (hope that’s not rambling and confusing)

I keep coming back to this lesson because I love how it is bringing the resolutions down to a simple one note change to keep an ear out for. At 9:33 you say you're in the "D position" of the A chord, but technically you are in the C position, are you not? In the CAGED system, a couple of the positions overlap very closely and every note is in two different chord shapes. I like to simplify the CAGED system to just ACE. Then only the tonics overlap and occur in two different chord shapes, otherwise any note belongs exclusively to either the A, C, or E pattern. By and large that includes all chord AND scale tones from any of the 3 positions. The D position and G position are still seen to exist, just as slightly less important combo positions drawing from two shapes (D position draws from E and C and G position draws from A and E). Just a little monkey wrench to throw your way! Always love your lessons and when I hear your playing I'm like, "Is he really just making all these sounds out of these simple chord shapes? OK, I'll go back and start there!"

This video has signal-handedly just showed the importance of using your ears to play. I have been looking for a book or something that would explain what you have in this video . Thanks Guthrie this was an amazing lightbulb moment for me and an answer to a part of the question I’ve been asking for so long. Are there any other books or videos that you have used to pickup these concepts? I have been interested in using more of the major7, major9 , and more “jazzy” sounding chords, but haven’t found a way to integrate chords other than trial and error. Any recommendations for that? I know your probably busy, but we sure appreciate the few minutes you take to break this stuff down into something palatable.

It adds so much flavour and a jazzy colour but i dont find the easy way to solo over this change .I mean i dont want to play a long diminished arpeggio all the time. Maybe there is a chord tone to play over this short diminished moment ? Hope you get the idea.....

Hi Guthrie, thank you very much for sharing your experience and your knowledge, your vision of the guitar is very precious and inspiring. I would like to ask some questions. When you improvise on A D A E, do you really think A D A E or I IV I V? I'm asking you this because I feel pretty comfortable on A D A E, but if I have to play for example Bb Eb Bb F, which is also I IV I V, I lose a lot of my landmarks . Furthermore, I realize that in addition of knowing the forms of chords, triads and arpeggios, what is important is to think very quickly and anticipate the chord that will happen. Maybe you have some advice to practice our ability to think of the chord on which we must play and at the same time the chord that will arrive? Thank you from France!

He's got a ton of pre-recorded lesson videos and a video exchange platform which is also awesome. It has already made a huge difference in my playing after just a few months. I used to approach improvising by starting with a 7-note scale and then I'd try to pick out the important notes, which ends up being a lot to process if the chords are moving quickly. Instead, Guthrie's curriculum is all about focusing on chord tones and then the rest of the scale follows when you need it. It's a little shift in thought, but the payoff has been big!

Good lesson but if you could break down the fingering on those runs that would be helpful. They look and sound chromatic but i couldnt get all that at the end of the video..

Man I just wanted to say this series of learning to solo over chord changes literally sounded like a foreign language on the first couple you posted. I’ve been watching and rewatching all of what you’ve posted and each one keeps getting easier to understand. I appreciate so much how you really and truly want to give others the opportunity to learn this instrument and to actually take it to the next level. Although I haven’t comprehended too much of what you’re putting out, these are easily some of the most informative videos on KZbin. Thanks man. Look forward to the next video.

This series of lessons is pure gold! Thanks so much for making these lessons for us Guthrie, I can't get enough of them! You're a phenomenal teacher as well. To this day I haven't seen anybody explain this topic so well and on point with lots of tips on how and what to practice to get this down. Thanks again!
