The last time I watched this I didn't know the arpeggios or the major scale shapes. Now that I do know those things I hear and see the way you are using partial shapes to spell the chords. This is what you often talk about, learn the chord shapes (caged), then learn the arpeggios and the scale shapes. The way you are using the major pentatonic and then the major diatonic to cycle the chords just clicked for me right here in this video. I don't have a guitar with me at work as I watched this but I paused the video and went over it in my mind, combining what you said with the Ionian licks and excercises I've been working on over the past two weeks. You are right of course GT when you said that it won't happen over night but repetition of these things that you HAVE to know will unlock the more interesting things that the guitar can do. Thanks again GT, I'm getting it finally after a year and a half of working on this stuff.

Genuinely, this is the lesson KZbin was missing. Thousands of vids on arpeggios Even more on scales Following video is always “now use these to solo (write melody, etc). How to connect chords, actually CONNECTING the chords and how to use scales and arpeggios in conjunction with each other.... this is what I needed so badly. Thank you so much man.

I wish I could give this video multiple likes. Usually people who are among the best players in the world seem (understandably) to struggle with distilling the underlying core concepts. Even if they can do that, it's another thing to be able to convey them clearly to people who are way below their level, using practical simple examples that make the point stick - that's the teacher's gift not the virtuoso's gift. Guthrie seems to have both gifts. Thank you!

Guthrie, there is a saying that those who can do, do and those cant, teach. You can do both. Those online doing teaching are okay but they lack the practical aspect of a professional who foremost makes his living playing music. This is why you will always win-you are teaching from the point of view of a professional musician first. Everything has value and works. Thanks man.

So for a while now, since the Tim Pierce visit videos, I've watched you fly through chord changes, so melodically, I knew you were arpeggiating, but that's it. And here you show us. Arpeggiates up, scale down. What an awesome pattern. Since the triad video lesson you did, any song I'm learning, I learn the 1,3,5 all over the neck. That was great and way more helpful than I realized at first. This is just more amazing direction to put it all together. Thank you Guthrie! Hey man I’ve been really digging your videos a lot lately. Super informative. Especially the chordal stuff. Can you please make a video about how to go from the very beginning of your approach to learning all the chords/triads and then where one should move to after that? Like a step by step fashion of if you would go learn all the arpeggios next, then scales, then pentatonics, etc...... I’ve been playing for around 17 years and have recently decided to go all the way to the beginning of my playing to fully analyze it all. Start from square one. Putting in a lot of theory work and attempting to fill any gaps I may missed over the years. Your chordal lessons have def opened my eyes to a new approach and I would love to see and hear how you would personally go about learning everything in a step by step fashion. Keep it up man. Love watching your stuff!

Moving fast now Guthrie. 3 vids almost back 2 back. And yes, I agree, 30mins seems just about right Thank you for what you do. With how well you reply to people and more content quickly, your channel is going to take off. You hit 15,000 quickly, now sit back and watch what happens next!

You covered the basics for beginners. A place where everyone starts. The best place to begin one’s musical journey. I don’t think there’s a better way to teach tonic/dominate harmony. I had a piano player show me this stuff. There is so much information. You talking I to IV. The bass intro to “My Girl”is V / I It makes me rethink how I learned music. If anyone gets bored play ‘em one of your original tunes. Great down home approach.

Man Guthrie! You are helping me breakthrough and break out of just using one pentatonic shape. I am just starting to take baby steps. It’s a lot and seems overwhelming at times. Thank you!

Your long videos are appreciated. It might be different if they were lacking in substance, but I can honestly say that hasn't once been an issue in a single video of yours that I've seen. And I do try to keep up with you for exactly this reason. I remember immediately thinking, "YES, finally a channel with practical foundational guidance that I can apply today AND use in various songs, styles, and situations"! You're a gift brother. I'm signing up for your artistworks course.

Question, would you describe this technique as sandwiching the arpeggios with walking up or down the major scale?
@guthrietrappmusic
@guthrietrappmusic 5 жыл бұрын
Fishy Phish Thanks man! I would just call it playing out of the chord shape. But I call everything that. The scale comes from the chord.

Guthrie, you are doing a great job with the content - truly one of the best players of the current era. Business idea: setup a 3 day guitar "camp" in Nashville - get you and 5 other top players to host and do live lessons, discussions, clinics etc. Arrange a deal with a local hotel to host + accomm for non natives

Wow, I hope this isn't inappropriate, but I just got home from partying most of tonight, checked my email and seen that you uploaded a video. I was pretty buzzed but grabbed my guitar and played this video twice. I nailed this lesson but lost my buzz. Oh, well, I can't sleep now... I'm gonna watch more Guthrie Trapp videos...that's for sure! Thanks for posting!
