Great Video!!! One issue that I encountered when I installed my rain gutter system that provided water for my 10 rain barrel watering system I made, was that the screws used to hold the elbow to the gutter and down spout managed to catch a lot of leaves on the tips of the screws, causing them to clog up. Having very large Oak trees (75' tall) around the house forced me to clean the down spouts out every few months. I finally decided to replace the screws with aluminum rivets. I have not had to climb the ladder to clean the down spout opening since then. OK, I still needed to clean the gutters in the Fall and Spring yet, but not for the down spouts. Just a thought. The rivets are still doing fine 18 years later.
@jessehansen104 ай бұрын
That happened to me as well. Though I didn’t think of rivets. I just siliconed the exposed screw so it wouldn’t catch the leaves as well. Thanks for the tip, I’m gonna change mine out pretty soon.

The idea with this is that it's not difficult. There's really nothing to get wrong other than not slopping enough (or in the correct direction) and not sealing enough. If a person can't tilt and glue, well, that's a different conversation. As he stated, the biggest difference with a DIY and professional finish is that professional install has the ability to install seamless gutters. Seamless gutters are good for aesthetics and for less chance of a leak, but overall, it's not overwhelmingly better and can cost a lot more. Even if a DIY job requires resealing, it's not difficult at all.

@@joseph7105 1 year later and I tend to agree with you and all the other comments, but am still confident in my choices. I’ve had gutters, windows and doors, a roof, a garage door with opener, and a new hvac ac/heat pump system put into my living in fixer upper all by qualified companies through the BBB. 3 out of the 5 jobs were subcontracted out to no name guys in unmarked white vans. Most of the subcontracted work left a little to be desired and I will definitely be more picky from now on. I often wonder if they subcontracted it because my house is not a “model” home ala one they could take pictures of before and after to proudly present on their website. One of the roofers dented in my new gutters and they left nails everywhere. The window and door work was pretty abysmal. It has saved me a ton on electric but the trim work was horrible for what I paid. But really, I can’t complain. I don’t have the time to do these repairs by myself. Can I be without a front door for 2-3 weeks once I rip the old one out? Good video. I've done a few gutters before but learn something every time I see one of your videos. I would recommend you add a "Kickout Flashing" where the gutter meets the upper wall. There is a gap between the gutter and the wall there. It is common for water to run down the wall flashing and get behind the siding. When I purchased my house the rim joist and floor had rotted so the patio doors didn't close properly. Likewise the sheathing had rotted away above the door and a frog was living in there. The "Kickout Diverter" made a big difference.

Thank you for the video Jeff. I just wish you had covered more how you put the 2 long pieces together up there, do you use connectors, do you just overlap them, do you screw them together, how you seal them together, etc, as that is usually the hardest part when installing the gutter and usually the weakest point to leak water. Thank you!! Keep it up!!
@CP-nf9my2 жыл бұрын
And where to attach them when you have drip edge over a 1 x 2 on the top end of the fascia. I have contractors telling me you attach by screwing into the drip edge (gutter under drip edge) and some telling me it attaches under the 1 x 2 -never screw into the drip edge (gutter still under drip edge).
@dillwiggle22 жыл бұрын
You should overlap them at least a few inches, use sealant in between and best way is to use aluminum rivets but you can use screws. But the absolute best way is to get it made in one piece cause eventually it will leak from the joint when it expands and contracts enough and the sealant will deteriorate, with one piece you will never have a joint leak ever.

I just did a short 12 foot gutter over a wide entry stair that takes you up 4 feet to a deck with roof another 9 feet up. I wish I had known about the ladder attachment, but even it would not have helped because the ladder would have had too much slope to be safe to use due to the stairs extending out from the deck. I ended up building a narrow platform at about 6.5 feet above ground across the 5 foot wide stairs in order to be able to set the anchors. To give me more safety on my narrow perch I placed two small eyescrews in the facia near both ends of the gutter and used thin nylon rope thru the eyes to lift the gutter in place as well as hold it nearly where it was to be anchored. That worked well. My only two complaints are aesthetically I don't like the steep pitch of about 1.25 inches over the 12 foot lenght I chose. But, I decided on it to minimize over time it becoming a pond for the birds. I wanted to maximize no ice on the stairs in the winter so chose steep pitch over looks. Its not a horrible look, but you do notice that lines are not parallel & over a long length I think it would make the house look a bit crooked. My other complaint is I had a hell of a time getting the Home Depot angle piece for downspouts to connect to the downspout at both ends of the angle adapter. One end was fine. The other end seemed to have the same profile as the gutter and to make the connection I had to slit the end of the downspout a bit so as to be able to get it started in the mouth of the adapter. That did work well & I used rivits through out, not screws and they worked well. One more gutter to go but its over a rear deck and easy acess so it will not be the fight the front has been. If my pitch in the front eventually bothers me I can always rotate the one end up. Its just building another platform which is time consuming and if I used scaffolding I'd have to place a section on both sides of the 5 foot wide stairs which might have been easier than how I did make a work platform.

This doesn't make sense to me Jeff... @16:54 Down spout is going "over top" of the plastic... That would leave a chance to have some water go outside over the plastic. I purchase plastic fittings where the downspout goes "Inside" the plastic fitting so there is NO chance of water going outside the system...
@philshock38053 жыл бұрын
Noticed that as well. Whatever is being attached (going with gravity) should be on the outside of the previous piece, otherwise water can get around the seam. I can't be sure but it looked like that might have been an adapter on top meant for the smaller sized downspout. If so, all he has to do is remove the adapter and slide the downspout into it.
@omgBenton3 жыл бұрын
I believe he put this part in upside down. If you look closely when he's carrying the piece over to the back of the house, it looks like one end comes pre-tapered. That end should've gone into the flexible bottom piece, not the other way around. Still a great video.
@HomeRenoVisionDIY3 жыл бұрын
sorry if that bothers you. the product was not designed to sit on the outside so it is what it is. on the bright side it does take 95% of the water 4' from the foundation. this is more about water management and less about perfection. I personally love the drain system that allows the installation of pea gravel on top of the drain vs having a spout just hanging there waiting to be knocked off by the wind and ice in the winter time. Cheers I gave a little to gain a lot.

Always appreciate watching your videos wish you could see my set up over here you'd get a quite a laugh out of it. I had a guy put aluminum gutters on the roof edge but for some reason he never did the down pipes. So I recently tried to do the down pipes myself. but I didn't put the s-curve at the top. I don't have a proper ladder. I have a drill and brackets but I haven't been able to drill holes into the side of the house, for some reason. So instead of the s-curve at the top I just have the pipe coming straight down. it's not exactly straight because the horizontal gutter is not quite flat, so it's actually coming sort of back towards the house at an angle. Then at the bottom of the pipe I have it sitting on some tile and stuff that I salvaged. So I put an elbow there at the bottom. And the remaining part of the pipe I run out to the street. I might try to do a better job of so it will be more secure in case of high winds or hooligans. Stay off my lawn! Because right now basically all I have holding it in place is the stuff at the very bottom under the elbow. With about 15 ft of pipe above it. But for now it seems to be holding.

Am a recent subscriber so went to you first with my little DIY gutter question. I have about 2 feet from the gutter downspout to the side of the house. The contractor who did the shingles purchased some the gutter supplies. I decided to do the gutter myself. He purchased 3 elbows. I needed 2 and an extension between the two. The very last part of your installation that you skipped was my question. No matter. Not rocket science. Lowe's does sell the extender. Tomorrow I hopefully finish this little project ... little, but not an easy height ... about 30'. Not fond of heights so I did pay attention to your ladder positioning advice.

I used the same straps on my downspout but I attached them differently. I put the strap on top of the downspout with one screw in the middle. Then I bent the wings and screwed it down on both sides to staple it down. The other things I did different was I used unions on the seams but your idea seems faster. Where I bought the gutters they only had a nail system to hang it but your system it seems way better. Also, I attached mine under the drip edge to prevent leaks on the back side. The hardest thing for me was finding the right caulking nothing I saw was labeled specifically for gutters or direct sunlight.

My comment would be to not use an excessively long screw to attach the downspout brackets. You don't want to penetrate the sheathing into the stud bay space any more than necessary, say 1" beyond the inner surface of the sheathing. You don't know how close to the inside of the sheathing a wire or pipe may be at that point inside the wall. We are renovating an 1860s cape for my daughter and some of the "remodeling" involved using 3 1/2" screws for 1/2" drywall. In several places, only the old ceramic tubes saved the original wires from being damaged. (Yes, we are completely rewiring to current codes.) Jeff and his videos have been a godsend for us during this project. Keep up the great work.

Tin snips are a lifesaver. I remember when I had my gutters redone after hail damage, I wasn't happy with the lengths of the downspouts (didn't go as far away from the house as I would have liked) so I bought new pieces, cut them, and installed. I tried cutting with a hacksaw, and that was a pain. in. the. ass. Bought some L and R snips, and damn, so much easier. Random question - 19:33 - Seems like water would leak out between the downspout and the plastic at that connection, no? I would have thought you'd want to crimp the downspout so the plastic wraps around it. Or is leaks not a concern there (or such a small amount)?

It's definitely wrong. The diverter he is using is designed for two sizes of pipe. He needed to cut off the top portion of the unit for his size spout and fit it 'into' the diverter.

its not plastic. its made of thin metal sheet that is bathed/laminated in plastic to make them last a long time.. But yes the fitting sheet should go under the roof plate and down into the horisontal gutter. But I replaced a lot of those while keeping the fittings. You do NOT want to mess with those if they are intact and secured on under old roof plates. Keep them as they are. mount the holders and slide the new gutter it in from the side😉

I love DIY but seamless gutters leave fewer points to fail. The UV will break down sealant and seams will leak.

I’m planning on adding eavestroughs to my 14 foot shed in the spring to collect rain water for the garden. There is no soffit or fascia, the shingles hang over the siding just about 1/2 to 3/4 of an inch. Do you think I could get away with just screwing the trough right into the siding and the plywood under it?

Nice video. It would be helpful to show the viewers how to find the correct angle for the ladder….put each of your feet on top of each ladder foot and extend your arms forward parallel to the ground, adjust ladder position to reach the rung of the ladder then you have the proper angle for the ladder. Always maintain 3 points of contact with the ladder and do not take your foot the ladder rung as done at 9:52 and don’t lean to a side when on a ladder. Never put screws in your mouth, especially on a ladder.

@13:55 do you need to seal the seam so it doesn't leak mid-way? You edit that part so I could see what you do lol

No fascia on a carport which was converted to a shed by the previous owner. It has a metal roof. Only taking water on one side possibly because the other side slopes away. My thought process is to put the gutters and downspout and attach the gutters by some sort of roof straps or hangers. Sound doable?

This is perfect, getting ready to close on a house and should everything go okay, the first thing I need to do on the house is replace the gutters cause they're all old and messed up.

When you install rain gutters should it see the sides a little bit I would say like maybe every 10 ft about an inch or so or should it just be put up level I think of its level it will not drain right?

DRIP EDGE…..make sure the back side of gutter sets up against the facia with the drip edge coming over the top of the back edge of gutter. You may have to grab the bottom of drip edge and pull it outward to slide the top back of gutter up under the drip edge. Is this a correct statement?

You could always go to your local gutter contractor store/place of business and have them cut out specific lengths of gutter for you and you can transport them. Be sure nothing is over 20 feet or else you will need to splice together or just have gutter guy do a cut and drop on your location of need. It will save some money but unless ur already an expert gutterman might as well let the experts take care of it at that point. P.s be sure to measure out exact location of ds holes unless you are gonna do those urself
