When we gutted our GMC in order to have a clean slate to work with, we chased out a mother rat and two babies from inside the vehicle. The vehicle is now a mobile science lab that has a roll off back section in order to expose a telescope which is installed inside the vehicle. The vehicle is used to bring STEM education to schools up and down the front range of Colorado. Happy to send you photos of the completed vehicle is you wish. Good luck on your GMC RV.

Not Sure it is too late or not but it would be best if you take a cardboard template of some of the cabinet sides so you you will have the radius. That way you dont have to guess and it will go back up against the wall and fit great without any gaps. Then you can throw all the old wood away so it can be be built to your liking and have the radius.

Also maybe beef up the insulation. An extra layer will help soooo much keeping the inside cool. (Or warm in the winter)

Brilliant. I’m loving the build. I watched a YT video on the design and engineering that went into these campers and it’s truly amazing the ideas they came up with. Things like the front wheel drive and the odd rear suspension were all done to save space. There’s nothing wrong with a modern fit out, a lot of homes get that and even old cars dropped onto modern frames and mechanicals is common. There’s plenty of restored GMC’s getting around so personally I wouldn’t worry much about keeping the interior original. You’ve already come up with some very good ideas so keep up the great work and watch out for random turds😂. Cheers, Stuart 🇦🇺

No messing about here. That thing is totally torn apart. On the basis it’s only original once I’d think long and hard before taking anything to the tip and would try to reinstate as much of the original cabinetry as possible albeit with updated underpinnings. I’d probably also keep the main bedroom at the back for privacy if I was considering taking long road trips with young kids. Fresh shag pile (preferably orange😂) is a must!

My late wife and I had an old '78 Allegro motor home with that 454 engine. VERY strong engine that pulled a tow dolly with my late wife's car on it. Since you have kids, one word of warning, NO CARPET! Put down a vinyl or faux wood floor as you are going to be getting a ton of sand and dirt being brought in. Just a natural fact if you have kids.

As to the water tank, keep it in a central location, not on the side of the unit. That will help keep your Center of Gravity(CG) in line with the rest of the unit. 🙂

Taking out the grungy carpet was the most joyful thing to see. I could almost smell that gross mold and rat dirt in it, ugh. Great job removing all that gunk from engine too. I learned a lot watching you. Cleaning an engine should be done, but what to cover up? This was helpful. Disassembly is so easy on these rigs. In today's Class C crappy builds, wood framing is stapled onto other parts. Taking anything out destroys it. This was beautiful to watch. This is how assembly should be done. What was super useful to see also was what was behind all the cabinets, the type of spray foam insulation, the substrate on floors, how they were assembled. INGENUITIVE - a new word you created which is a combination of INGENIOUS and INVENTIVE. I like it. Great video, so informative and I love your positive energy. Thank you for a very educational and enjoyable video. The music was nice, but prefer no music for these longer videos as they hurt the ears after a while. Too much sound. fyi - Don't work without a dust mask and gloves and even an apron. Your child should not be in there without PPE gear. There is mold, dust mites, rat poop diseases, bacteria, fungus floating around - a hotbed of disease and parasites. Please don't let children into a construction zone without full lung protection. That stuff could be deadly for their sensitive lungs. She has no goggles, no mask, no gloves, and a bare dress. Full clothing, mask up, goggles, shoes not sandals, hard hat for little kids please. My stupid brother took his toddlers to a construction zone on his house remodel and they were inhaling that dust and rolling in it much to my horror. Next thing I hear is that both of them have lead poisoning. Good luck getting that out of their bodies. Doomed for life by an irresponsible father. Take this very seriously. There are so many chemicals hurting us all the time, that we don't need to actively put any more inside us. 1. How is hantavirus spread? Hantavirus is spread from wild rodents, particularly mice and rats, to people. The virus, which is found in rodent urine, saliva, and feces (poop), can be easily released in the air in confined spaces when disturbed by rodents or human activities, such as sweeping or vacuuming. 2. What are the symptoms of Hantavirus Pulmonary Syndrome? Symptoms begin one to eight weeks after inhaling the virus and typically start with 3-5 days of illness including fever, sore muscles, headaches, nausea, vomiting, and fatigue. As the disease gets worse, it causes shortness of breath due to fluid filled lungs. 3. How harmful is rat feces? Contamination of stored foods with rodent feces and urine may transmit disease to both humans and pets. These contaminated foods may carry diseases such as cryptosporidiosis, toxoplasmosis, leptospirosis, salmonellosis, and listeriosis.

Maybe Bus Grease Monkey can steer you in the right direction for airbags and solar power, and might I suggest, when you install the fresh shag carpeting, that you spend a little more and have your logo woven in? Just a custom touch, because I know just about the whole family is going to have a hand in this retrofit. 👍

What a great camper! Hope you can keep the original interior, that cabinet with the drawers is an iconic piece for it. Gas is great for the fridge, stove and water heater. If you plan any off-grid camping like state parks I would keep it. Solar will not be enough. We have carpet in our 66 Avion, the kids drag tons of dirt in and it gets hard to clean. This reminds me so much of the what I got into when I had to fix the slide on my 1994 Damon Escaper 5th wheel camper. Thought it would be a weekend project, and ended up pulling the slide and rebuilding the whole thing. Then....while I was at it, I ended up remodeling the whole interior since I had it apart. Then.....the inside looked so good, I had to do the exterior. Ended up recruiting a friend to help me wrap it. Also ended up lifting it 6" and upgrading the suspension. Making videos along the way sure helped me with putting it back together! Keep the storage space, you never have too much storage when camping, especially when the kids get bigger!

I restored my abandonded 75 eleganza.i left as much 1975 in it as I could. It outperformed my friends sprinter based airstream on every count other than gas mileage. Make sure you check the oil pan for timing chain tooth nylon and crusty oil remnants. They will clog the oil pick up and scatter the motor. Best to pull the motor and go through it while the interior is out. I know from experience.

There is one of these not far from me that has been sitting for at least 20 years at a RV campground up against a fence. Has a broken window and grafitti on it. But I'd still like to tow it back to my shop and do what I am seeing on this channel. I'd like a comfortable 'travel car' where we have a fridge, bathroom, lots of comfy seating, and a place to lay down. We have a travel trailer, and as others have said, camping with carpet is a challenge to keep clean. You can get sound-deadening material to lay under some synthetic flooring. Save the shag for accent pieces on the wall or ceiling to tie back to when this was new. But things changed for good reason. I'd also reconsider the gas lines. Use it for the water heater and the fridge, and the heater. Hook up to a twin 20 lb tank set up that you can switch. Those are easy and cheap to refill.
