Ingredients

2 1/2 cups flour
1/2 cup yellow split peas
1 tsp. Instant yeast
1 tsp. baking powder
1 tbsp. roasted ground geera ( cumin )
1 tbsp salt
4 cloves garlic
pepper to taste
2 stems scallions
couple drops yellow food colour

Growing up in Guyana my mum used to make the round bara with a whole in the middle. I believe it was made with urid dhal. However after we left several years later I saw this type of bara being made. It has become the most common type today. I dont think many people remember the original type. Times change. Both are extremely delicious.

Looks amazing. I will definitely substitute the synthetic yellow food coloring for turmeric instead which is dangerous for the body. Turmeric is healthy for the body, lowers inflammation and so much more!! 💛

Really awesome vid and recipe. Haven't had a Bara in ages. Thanks to you I can now make and enjoy it. Tumeric is better to use as a coloring and has better healing qualities to our body than coloring. Tumeric battles cancer, diabetes etc. Cheers RNG... keep these videos coming, I enjoy all of them and look forward to seeing them.

You leff out the poi bagee in the ingredient list in the video description. ;) I've never made bara, I remember my mom making it when I was young but she made it like bake but smaller. I wonder if you can do that recipe too. I will try this one too it looks delicious. Thanks!

I will try your recipe today. I have seen a recipe for Bara one ingredient was Urdi but I can't seem to find that product so I am holding up on that for now

Thank goodness your bara came out round, this is how my mom taught me. Some people bara looks like the map of the world, different shapes and sizes also i am glad you did not put a hole in the center, I know taste matter but also presentation. Good job, looks delish.

Can you use the split peas powder instead of the fresh grind split peas, is there any difference between the two?

Yes you certainly can, they have a slightly different texture when cooked I guess.

Yes you can make it with baking powder but it will not be as soft as with the yeast. It will be soft as soon as you fry it but soon after it will become a bit stiff.

Yes, in the original Indian recipe it has a hole, but most Guyanese don't make the hole in them. also ours taste a lot different.

That's not bara..thats bigandy Bara is more flattened ( roti like ) but small .and it's eaten with sour /chutney/salsa/achar
