You would want an adhesive lined heat shrink so that when you heat it, the adhesive inside forms the seal. Standard heat shrink does not provide a watertight seal.
@CallanChristensen3 ай бұрын
@@Hellahard I think the shrink tubing idea is worth a try, but even without waterproofing adhesive I wonder if transparent heat shrink tubing is clear enough for this to work. Might also have issues preventing the tubing from shrinking wavy or it fogging up if it isn’t vacuum sealed? I’d suggest conformal coating the screen’s PCB and waterproofing the case. The front of the screen should be fine getting wet if water doesn’t get to the edges.

I would definitely recommend clear heat shrink so you can see through it. If you mount the pi and other things inside the car you could have a flatter package on the bumper sticker, with just video and power going to the display. an xt30 connector would be good for power and you could use a male to female HDMI to get the port through the heatshrink. you can get multipole magnets on mcmaster that hold onto sheet metal better. love the build!

This was definitely a passion project since it came in at over $100 fully assembled, but man I'd love to make a version of this that always shows what's playing (albeit via Apple Music instead of Spotify) but also change to other messages on the fly with a board of buttons kept near the driver seat. it's not just criminal you have to worry about - you open yourself up to liability. all it takes is someone to say "I was distracted by X on the car and it caused me to crash and hurt my back" to, at minimum, tie you up with a ton of court costs. your insurance will almost 100% drop you, too, the moment they find you have an "unapproved alteration" on your vehicle, even if it's not related. if you get in an accident with an under/non-insured individual or it's your fault, you may end up footing the full bill and the medical bills simply because you have this thing on your car. all of this depends on your insurance and other things, but you may want to check your fine print to see if you're opening yourself up to liability. (I'm not a lawyer, don't live in MA, and have very little experience with this - just things to check).

I would have expected there to be many of the likes in the span of 8 years ya know i think theres reasoning behind why i havent been seeing any BTW . to help you fight that you can do something like ADD AN IR LED ARRAY ALONG THE TOP OF THE DISPLAY that way, it doesnt interfere with people SEEING the display but if cops try to record you with their on board camera. the IR will over saturate their video camera, leaving them with no admissable evidence into court besides their word. its such an easy thing to do and would offer you ALOT of legal leverage if it DOES actually become an issue

It seams unnecessary complicated when some Bluetooth audio devices can just extract the current song name from your phone and some esp could display this text to an LCD screen easily
@GuyDupont3 ай бұрын
seems that way at first glance but: 1. We don't use the Bluetooth directly for audio, we use Carplay/Android Auto. This setup is source agnostic. 2. This display can't be directly driven by an ESP (although the new P4 might change that), so even if I could use it for audio, I'd still need another piece of hardware just for the display. 3. Much simpler to write a little Particle app to fetch a tiny piece of JSON than ESP firmware to act as a (reliable, good-sounding) audio receiver. 4. Most importantly - I had the Particle board sitting around! I figured, might as well use it. 5. No way to filter out podcasts/audiobooks/other audio if using Bluetooth metadata (though it could be funny to show this stuff too). The idea to use the AVRCP data is a really good one but it doesn't work for my usecase. My setup is definitely less "clean" but it is really quite "simple" IMO!
@GermanMythbuster3 ай бұрын
Why even over the web?! Just buy a Bluetooth Audio Receiver that you can control with the Pi. Bluetooth also transmits Meta-Data aka song Titles. Grab it, Display it. ok you need a AUX input in your car stereo, but most cars have that.
@GuyDupont3 ай бұрын
The short answer is: I already had the Particle board sitting around unused, so it was a no brainer. And that wouldn't work super well in our case because we use Android Auto/Carplay to connect our phones. It's a good and interesting idea though - I know you can use an ESP-32 as a Bluetooth Audio sink, but I dunno if you could have it simultaneously act as a BLE peripheral or WiFi access point to broadcast the data to the bumper sticker. Would cut costs quite a bit if it could work and sound good.

THIS way , if my system noted i was moving fast then abruptly stop, it would begin detecting movement on either side of my car. so instead of having to turn my head to see em, my door panels would gentley glow and pulse , depending on which side they were approaching on. offered my ALOT of benefits simply by knowing that and remaining super chill and motionless, knowledge is power. cop oncve did notice a custom tac display i built and code in my sun visor's edge stickin his head in my window he noticed it and started getting excited and asking questions gave me a chance to talk shop with him and that just completely halted his "mission objective" conclusion. i suggest DO SOmething that gives you advantages against them with your skills buddy even if its to win them over cops LOVE driving fast. its a rush this means they often LOVE discussing cool car related techs such as custom tac readout visors
