Here's an interesting idea: If you play as Kongo, you get Bakongo as your primary culture. Now, the malaria mechanic in the game has an interesting quirk wherein colony speed is only reduced for non-homeland states. For european nations, this is all of africa, however, for Kongo, several states in western africa are marked as their homeland states, meaning that the colonization debuff doesn't apply to them, Of course, since this is severe Malaria territory, you still need to get Quinine before Europeans gobble all of it up to colonize these territories, but surely, someone with enough dedication could do some pretty crazy shit with that.

Does this game include naval warfare? Maybe it happens offscreen in this video, but it seems like armies from other parts of the world just show up magically without naval transport and support.

It does, and I fought like 2 naval battles this entire campaign. If you convoy raid an armies supply lines they will lose supply and take more attrition and more in battles but there is no way to completely stop an army it seems.

It kinda sucks that they aren’t dependent on naval transport for getting to other continents like Europe to the Americas etc and that it plays more like an “ascended”version of Risk instead. I guess they figured nations like the British Empire would be too OP. So basically France or Prussia for example can just march up on London without the ocean being a natural barrier.
