In this brand new documentary, made for Channel 4, Guy follows in the footsteps of the brave young pilots of World War Two to discover if he could have been a fighter pilot in the Battle of Britain. If he makes the grade, he’ll face his toughest test yet: flying a Hawker Hurricane in a dogfight against a Messerschmitt 109. In this clip, Guy trains for his final flight. As a pilot I knowi we are only seeing bits of his flight training, I know it takes time to get things to click in the brain so things become second nature. There is a lot Guy has to coordinate the maneuvers we are seeing in this video. Guy not being happy with his performance is a good sign. I look forward to see where this goes.

@@oliverpalmer1006 the last time I was up as PIC was in a friend's Cessna 172. As for time in type I have flown Cessna 120, 140, 150, 170, 172, 180. Piper PA-18 Super Cub, PA-22 Tri-Pacer. BC12 Taylorcraft. Nothing out of the ordinary. To get back in the air I'll be building a two place homebuilt aircraft.

Looking through my Dads logbook. He crashed out of flying training by pranging a Harvard in Rhodesia 1942. Became an air gunner instead.

I don`t envy your Dad doing either mate. Flying in peace time, is one thing, but when the other guy is trying to shoot you down, that`s a whole different ball game. Those lads had Guts by the shop full. Respect to your Dad Mate.

I had the opportunity to part fly the Harvard in Florida in 2000, I had no training, apart from emergency egress from the aircraft and how to pull the ripcord. I had only flown simulators for the last 5 years prior to that. I had an amazing 30 min flight, the instructor talked me through the aerobics and I managed to squeeze in a wing over, a barrel rolls and a loop. Cost of the experience was just under $400 and they recorded a video for you as a memento.

I was flying a Harvard 2 days ago doing aerobatics and the 'wing over' which is an introduction to aggressive maneuvering. As an instructor I understand that this is not always an easy maneuver to learn as it takes a student out of their comfort zone, but it will 'click' after some time with an understanding and competent instructor. I do not like to comment on other instructors methods usually, but with only this short insight into Guys instructor, I think maybe a little more patience and a better patter he could get on top of this soon. DONT GIVE UP, the number one rule in flying, stay in control and you will have your best chances for success.

One day, Guy will end up dogfighting in light lead-in fighter planes, and most probably take a two seater Typhoon/F-16/(maybe)F-15Es, perhaps even do it solo in an F-35B hahaha. Chances are, Guy may end up flying a SpaceX Crew Dragon for what it's worth!

Strange they did this so low. You'd have thought it'd be safer to climb first, but then if the Harvard's that much of a slug low down I'm guessing it'd be even worse at altitude.
@tSp289
@tSp289 3 жыл бұрын
@Ignatios Nelson Thanks, I'm aware. It was pretty much my point, but since I've never heard of the Harvard before it was a guess. Accounts I've read of test pilot procedures usually start with them climbing, so they have time to get it back under control if they lose it. Just felt a bit dangerous to be flying that brick down so low. Since it's got a 200mph top speed, no supercharger (never mind multi-stage) I'm guessing it'd be stalling a lot at altitude, if it could even get there.

The Harvard is just the RAF version of the T-6 Texan trainer used by USAAF as well I believe.
@aviatorflighttraining
@aviatorflighttraining 3 жыл бұрын
@@tSp289 it does have a single stage supercharger and preformed fairly well up to 10,000 feet. But it is an airplane that was designed to teach you, it requires you to do things well or it will smack you around a bit. I refer to the T-6 series as easy to fly, hard to fly well.

I read the memories of one Polish pilot who fought in the Battle of Britain, who at the time when the German was on his tail and it was really hot was making his Hurricane a flat controlled spin and getting out of a difficult situation. I'm very curious when Guy learns this trick?

It may be the case that Guy's had more flight training than it appears, but I'm pretty sure you need one hand on the throttle during maneuvers like this, especially if flying solo. So its curious.

Someone clearly doesn't understand the flight mechanics of World War Two era aircraft. These are not modern jet fighters with incredibly high wing tear resistance... These things can enter a flat spin incredibly easily and at that point, both of them would be dead. Not to mention this is an early war aircraft, not a supermarine spitfire.

Dodgy artificial horizon in the rear seat. Probably toppled. Wing over..where. Some of these programs are rubbish, would need something like 100 hours solo harvard before flying a Hurricane solo just for insurance.
