Hey man, it's great that you're teaching the young generation the right way of using body filler. This video brought me back to the 70s when they used to call me the bondoman. You're doing it exactly the way we did it back then. The only difference I see is that we used to move the chess grader, or the sanding block, in a cross motion to leave the surface completely level, it's very important if you're doing a whole door or half a hood.

Hey, I used this method on the whole side of my 65 Chevelle, I didn't use the cheese grater, I used 40 grit with a long board, primer filler and blocked it and primed it and blocked it and the end result was laser straight panels! I feel the more you sand that filler with finer grit paper, the more of a chance your gonna put waves in it! Just my opinion! Thanks Man!👍👍

I used these blades for years. But I have found with the easier sanding fillers available now, that they have fallen from the preferred tool status. Also, one has to be careful not to damage or score the filler, therefore making further work. Yes, they have a purpose. But I think it's an individual's choice.😁

Started using the "cheese grater" rasp when they first came out. An old model I have has an adjustable bar that can be extended, you cut the grater to whatever length you want to use. The longer flat ( cg) I'd take off the holder, they are best for larger radius outside curves, VW bug per say, and if you take a cut off wheel to the half round, in the shape of a point V, it's easy to get in hard to reach places, like corners.

Back on the old days (1980's) we dint even know the cheese grater had a holder or tool. I stumbled upon if you clog your grater with bondo you can soak it in water & it will clean up easy . I had a mixing board made out of counter top left over ( cabinmate shop neat by) I would clean off the left over with a razor blade , The plastic applicators clean up better if you peel it off after its cured. If going for a flat skim coat use a metal putty knife.

3:28 when I moved into my first apartment I had never painted a house before, I had painted cars. I literally was using a rasp on the walls to try and get them smooth, treating it like it was a car. My landlord finally saw it and laughed and said you've only painted cars, haven't you... He dunked the roller in the paint and ran it up a section of the wall. I hadn't used the rasp on yet... The filler is your problem. Try gold. Sand it with a file with 36 to shape right before it gets fully hard, just as soon as it doesn't gum the paper. The durablock you had was the best. You were just using it wrong. You have to keep switching directions. Also, you won't have to press hard if you use gold. You will kick yourself if you ever try it. Last fact, a cheese grater is for someone that didn't do their metal work. A hammer and dolly shapes and saves money on materials and produces a better quality job.
