How to build a Wheelchair bicycle Project

As requested, a quick video showing how to modify a second hand bicycle to attach to the back of a wheelchair. Forgive the poor video quality, the point was/is to share the information. Please rate and review, it lets me know that I'm sharing information that folks can use.

Great bit of work! As well as obviously a great way of letting disabled friends come for a bike ride, its not a bad idea for a cheap-n-cheerful cargo trike design. The wheelchair is already designed to take a person's weight so strapping in a couple of Euro crates of shopping shouldn't tax it too much.

Thanks. I guess the idea is to give enough information so that people can do it themselves, OR show the video to your local welding shop to do it for you. Should be about 1 hour of shop time for them to modify the bike frame. Still 1300 dollars less than one of the factory made bike/chair packages.

Hi. Thanks for this great idea and realization. I love it. I may not understand everything but wouldn't it be simpler to have a drop down connection between the fork and the chair (instead of a flat one) to keep the angle and avoid cutting/welding?

I bet there's a way to use the wheelchair brakes and somehow attach a cable to it. Thank you for this video. I have a developmentally disabled client that would love this.

Sounds like a great idea. If you don't mind cutting the frame up on a spiffy new electric bike. If you ahve the time, I don't think it would be difficult to add bicycle style center-pull brakes to the wheelchair wheels also.,

Hi there Lee I absolutly love this & want to put somthing together to use with my clients with special needs. Only thing is I have a dicky knee due to a work injury 😁 Im looking at modifying your idea even further hopeing to use an electric trike bike with pedal assist but I have one big QUESTION do u know if I still need to add steel to straighten head stock if im using a 2 rear wheeled trike bike?? Excellent question. I doubt you'll need to cut and de-rake the neck if you're starting out with a trike. Sorry I took so long to reply. I didn't get notified of a question being asked.

How did you compensate for the 70%+ loss of stopping power when you lost the front brake from this modification?

You slow the hell down since you just lost a lot of braking capability, or spend 1500 dollars on a high end factory unit that has brakes on the wheelchair wheels also. And, just as a mater of accuracy, the 70 percent number is for motorcycles, not bicycles. For bicycles it is still a big deal, but let's be honest, a vast majority of bicycle riders are scared of using their front brakes anyway. Keep the rig in a lower gear, don't go blasting down the road at 40 mph with someone in a wheelchair bolted to the front end.

Not as good as a proper trike. This is mostly to benefit the individual in the wheel chair.

I have one done, Sitting here ready to go that I'd happily sell for 50 bucks. Wheelchair not included, obviously. Fresh tire and tube on it. Since I'm in Eastern South Dakota, shipping is usually the problem

I'd like to have my husband make one of these so we can take our son for a ride, He love to be on the back of the motorcycle with his dad but I think this would be amazing for the three of us to get some exercise and fresh air. I would have flipped the fork instead of welding frame but I'm sure you tried it so I don't even know lol.

Yep, flipping the fork was also my first idea, but it's the angled headstock that is causing the problem. De-raking is the only cure.

How does it turn?

Function or judgment? Functionally, it turns by substituting the bicycles front wheel for a wheel chair, using the existing bicycle headstock. By de-raking the headstock it solves the trail issue created by switching from single track, to multi track. Judgmentally, it is not as light turning as one of the 5000 dollar systems, and you'll probably just want to use the lower 1 or 2 gears of the bike. It is a low cost option for someone who doesn't have thousands of dollars to spend on a factory built unit.
