Building this fully electric wheelchair was super fun, and surprisingly simple. A few bars of metal tied into the already naturally existing supports and holes on the bike makes for a great seat supports. This Off Road wheel chair has a top speed of 20mph and a range of about 20 miles. The bikes I used cost about $1400 each, So after factoring in the $50 dollars worth of metal and random odds and ends, the whole thing cost about $3000 dollars to build. Which is less than half the price and twice the performance of other off road wheelchairs on the market right now.

As an electrical engineer, have you considered putting slim alternators/alternating current generators in the wheels so while she's burning current, she's also building back potentially double the current. If you are able to send me the figure you have for the battery output, RPM, actual range, and wheel size, I'd be happy to do the math for you. Then either you can do the work, or I can build the product (probono of course) so Cambry could have either a much extended range, if not a nearly unlimited range if the mathematics are correct. Zach, please let me know what you think, assuming you haven't already figured this type of process out. I sincerely hope you see this message, for both you (love your channel) and Cambry. This is awesome! Great work! One thought that came to mind for me is.....that looks hard to get into. What if you replaced the seat you made, with a way to connect the wheelchair. Obviously that'd be a bit of a challenging to figure out, but if the wheelchair could be the seat, and then they could unlock the wheel chair and roll away without any help. And if the bike died, they wouldn't be stranded, they'd still have the wheel chair.

Brilliant idea. I’m 80 years old and looking for an off road wheel chair to get me up the hill behind my property to my cabin. I’ve looked at quite a few but they are either way too expensive or probably not powerful enough. Years ago I built a 4 wheeled horse drawn Phaeton with Ackerman type steering with coil spring suspension and wide tyred bicycle wheels. I was thinking of electrifying it until I saw your videos, thank you so much Jerry.

Wow! I have no Idea how I found this but am so grateful!. Im 65 in a manual wheelchair living in Peru. My very expensive wheelchair just shook apart on the dirt roads and cobblestones. Had to have it welded together so its not able to break down for travel anymore. This would give me so much independence ! whoo weeee! Im going to see if my welder wants to tackle it!Because i need to transfer with crutches and cant lift my legs, I would put a Tube that holds my crutches and the front brace would need to open so i could back into the seat. I think i want an " office chair " like seat for more comfort installed with heavy duty springs on top of your flat welded seat. Incredible design! Thanks for sharing the build plans! I subscribed and will let you know how it turns out!. I just bought a donkey to pull a cart thinking that was my only option ! This is WAY better lol

Why you didn't connect the two motors to just one accelerator? And maybe if you turn the brake levers of 180 degrees she should be able to break with more "power"! One other thing, with the 18650 batteries you'll be able to build an another battery pack (connected with the two original batteries) that will fit under the seat to increase the autonomy! @72mardy
@72mardy 5 жыл бұрын
I agree with all these comments. A single throttle for both would be safer and easier to drive....but in saying that it might make tight turns difficult because both powered wheels are pushing at the same time, like with a locked diff in a car. Definitely flip the brake leavers to the bottom of the bars, and connect both front brakes to one and both rear brakes to the other. Or....all brakes to one leaver as I don't think independent front and rear braking would really be needed on a machine like this. Hydraulic brake calipers could be used in conjunction with a simple 4 way distribution block being activated by a motorcycle hydraulic brake leaver so it has enough pressure to operate the 4 mountain bike calipers. I don't think one mountain bike leaver would have enough pressure. And yes...plenty of room for extra batteries 👍 Dual suspension would be so much more comfortable, as many people have said but will be a challenge.mounting the seat section. Cheers.

It would need some sort of differential control, for cornering. This may be a little less user friendly, but it's probably easy enough, to get used to. It could have advantages, to control the traction of each drive wheel separately, in off-road conditions.

We are traveling to Europe next year, for a spinal cord procedure and was hoping to make him something that would help a little, so he's not 100% reliant on the manual chair. Too hard to take a full electric chair (which he only uses for yard work anyway), but not sure what environment we will be encountering while we are there. Thanks for the ideas! This is hugely impressive, I love it! Cambry is gorgeous and I cried when she went up the grass hill in the other video! Find the center of the "rear axle" (I know there isn't one, but the spot half way between the two rear hubs). Mark that spot. You've added two steering 'arms' on the front of the bike for the blue tie-rod to link the two steering assemblies. Cut these off, and angle them so that three things are all in the same line: the center of the bearings in which the forks turn, the center of the hole in which the tie-rod is bolted, and that mark between the back hubs. Make a longer tie-rod. This is 'Ackerman Steering' and it results in the front wheels steering at different rates, the wheel closer to the turn steers more than the wheel farther away, and means that all four wheels ALWAYS having the same center of turn when the bike steers, meaning that the front tires wont try to fight each other when steering. Not only will this make the ride a little better, it'll make the bike a little more stable, and it'll probably also mean that Cambry wont have to 'fight' the steering as much. It'll even slightly improve the bike's efficiency since steering wont put so much drag on the bike. Also, please move the brake levers either 90-degrees out, or 90 degrees in, so she can have either a couple fingers or her thumb on the levers at all times.

oh, and a quick-release on either-end of that tie rod would let her move between the front wheels instead of having to go in over the side

Excellent job. I had been thinking about making an electric wheel chair, but I was looking at it more from taking a wheel chair and adding the hub motors, controllers, batteries, and all. It's brilliant that you came at it from the angle that you did. Your ideas is much stronger and to cool factor is over the top. Really nice job. She must be thrilled.

Nice job! I watched the demo video as well and you should flip the brake lever assemblies for better ergonomics. Also you should ensure run off one bike battery , allowing you to increase the overall distance and then turn both on for all terrain applications Parking brake can be modeled after an older ATV set-up with a brake lever catch. Cheers!

Two linear activators to turn the front forks simultaneously would then allow the front steering coupler to disappear and thus, make it so that the young lady can then ride her wheel chair up to the twin bikes and slide back onto the saddle. Use of the linear activators could free up or rid the handle bars or even have a faux handle bar that could swivel down from the side coming to rest in front of her to feel more like a standard single bike. The handle bar could then be the variable switch activator to activate the linear rams. Use a pair of Lithium Polymer 14.4 v 35c batteries to operate the linear activators so the steering doesn't drain the wheel motor batteries. You could do the same for the disc brakes as well. Let me thank you for helping the young lady experience the freedoms you and I are able to enjoy. You are a fine young man. You have inspired me to begin designing a mount and dismount for folks needing to mow their own lawns via a rider or zero turn. Thank you again, kind Sir.

Now I'd like to take some welding lessons and find someone who needs that kind of transportation.
