We weigh our GVM before we fit out our canopy, and come a lot closer to our maximum GVM rating than we were expecting, not leaving us a lot of weight to finish our build.
But Jason from weigh safe gives us some great advice to help with planning our build.

I don’t have kids so I’ve been able to pull out my rear seat and put my fridge, battery and charging station there. This allows me to put my spare hard up against the front of my canopy. Another way to save weight is to put parabolic leaf springs in and you get the benefit of better handling also.

Great idea, balancing the weight out is so important. And having the fridge in the cab would be handy. I will look into the parabolic springs, thanks mate.😊

Ive seen heaps of canopies with the drawer system weighing more than the contents. Look for plastic shelving and baskets. I use a wardrobe shelving system from Bunnings for my tools and spares. strengthen the weak points with twitching wire.

Yeah i have seen some very heavy fit outs, we are going to have to be very concious with the weights of everything we put in it. Thanks for the tips, i will check them out.

A real eye opener. Such a problem for dual cab owners. The rear axle I s way too close to the back of the cab. Even the weight guy's comment on the poor load reserve of the Landcruuser. 640kg. I got the feeling that this build is not going to work unless huge dollars are spent on weight upgrades. Good luck.

Your right about the design, there is plenty of room for the rear diff to move back. I am looking at gvm upgrade options atm, I believe i can go to 3150 which will give me a bit more breathing space

Hi mate I just watched your vid when you first purchased the Ute. Have you still got the canopy? If so I would be interested. Draws ect as well. On the GVM did you get an upgrade at all. If so from whom. I also have a RC colorado. I’m a little Older than you (70) and I like it’s rude and performance. Cheers.

Hi mate, sold tub, canopy, draws... havent gotten the GVM upgrade yet, waiting to see how heavy my fit out comes to, to see if i need to upgrade vehicles or not.. i hope not though i love the RC for its simplicity aswell. Can get a 10% gvm upgrade max on these older vehicles. Fingers crossed its enough. It is currently in the shop getting the roof rack and canopy latches made up. Project got a bit delayed, i done a week trip up to 5 Rocks

Mine is a manual and drives like a dream. 10% gvm sounds good. Do they also give a 10% GCM? I have not had a tune yet. These engines are good but an extra 80-100 NM would be nice. Thanks for the reply.

A great informative vid ,the guy weighting is 100% correct the axle placement on all utes in this class is too far forward. Load the canopy up hook on van = a bent chassis, we saw 2 utes with bent chassis on a recent trip W.A. Kimberlies and N.T. There is talk in QLD allowing a GCM up grade ,more pain to come I think if the weights aren't keep in check in the canopy and towball weight. Safe travels
@lockedhubs4x4
@lockedhubs4x4 Жыл бұрын
Yeah, its a poor design, we are getting strengthening plates put on the chassis, seen a couple of bent ones aswell, it is going to be a challenge for us, but we can get a gvm upgrade which will help us out. I think a lot of vehicles are on or over there safe limits now, I hope they choose the vehicles able to upgrade gcm wisely.

@lockedhubs4x4 Hoping the chassis strengthing does the trick for you, most of the damaged utes I have seen have had airbags fitted with high pressures. I sold my Hilux because of the chassis concerns and purchased an LC200. No worries with 265kg TBW and a 2,460 atm offroad van in tow seems to work well for us. Safe travels. 👍

I had this problem with the same platform ('09 DMax). After a lot of time spent researching, and shifting what weight I could around the car, I managed to solve the issue. I sold it and bought a new car. The gen 1 Dmax (and Collie) just can't carry weight. There's no GVM upgrade kits for them. It is doable... if you're prepared to spend what the car is worth* getting it engineered yourself. Expect to pay for new suspension components, heavier rear diff/axle, new wheels/tyres, brake upgrade and potentially chassis bracing. I was also warned that the already average ride quality will be even worse. It is an expensive process and I couldn't get a solid answer on what the final GVM figure would be. (I'm remote though, so limited in engineering options... you may have better luck down your way) I could not justify paying an engineer to start the process without knowing where we would get to. If you choose to stick with the old girl, I wish you luck. I will be following with interest. But unless the car has some sentimental value I honestly can't imagine it being worth the cost. The money you will likely spend (especially if you're planning to SAS it) would get you in a newer platform that will take a GVM upgrade... and be a far better car all round. *Hyperbole...maybe... but a small fortune none the less.

I really love the old Collie, i prefer my 4wds to be simple, which is why my last 3 have been GQ's... im personally not too fussed on all the modern bells and whistles... Im pretty confident i can make a cool rig out of it if i plan it out well... but i guess we will see in time.

The more I look at all the add ons that people are chucking on vehicles the more I think that something like an off road Pod style trailer is the way to go, albeit an expensive way to go imo. I have a 18 Pajero Sport that I use for camping but I don't have a fridge, dual battery system, drawers etc etc. I basically use an esky and Front Runner Wolf pack boxes that I put everything in. I do have a steel bull bar on it as well as a roof rack (not heavy) but no other real mods that add weight. I chucked it over the weighbridge where I worked a while back before a trip I was doing and it was only 100kg under max weight. Keeping these things under GVM really isn't that easy considering the amount of gear that most people seem to cart around with them these days.
@lockedhubs4x4
@lockedhubs4x4 Жыл бұрын
Yeah exactly, especially with all the mod cons for camping these days, we can get around 200kg more with gvm upgrade which will help, but i need to do a bit more research with the sas conversion side of things. Wow... the Pajeto doesnt allow for a lot of weight obviously, i bet there are a lot getting around over weight, they are a popular 4x4. When we did SA we saw a lot of modern Pajero's used as tow vehicles.
@oldbloke204
@oldbloke204 Жыл бұрын
@@lockedhubs4x4 The Pajero Sport can carry around 600 kg, from memory, before GVM is hit. This is pretty comparable to other vehicles I have seen. Mine is base spec so higher models may be a bit less. They have a pretty high tow limit but I'm guessing most that you see pulling decent sized vans will be very close to or over GCM. That would apply to plenty of rigs you see getting around imo.

Thanks mate, thank you for watching again😁👍 thats a good idea, we wont be towing for a while, i will be looking at GVM upgrade options this week, hopefully i can get a bit more out of it. I think you said it's a 2009 model car? I have a 2010 ranger, and I couldn't find anyone to do a gvm upgrade, I think you might find it very difficult to go down that path. Only because the age of the vehicle, good luck, if you win, let me know, I'll try my luck aswell

Do your research better and purchase a more suited and capable vehicle, then spend your money on that…
