Back around 2012 - 2014 the "Flood" game mode was really popular, you had a small time window to buy props and make a ship, then would fight to the death. What a great time it was.

you can already make pirate ship wars in Gmod, there's a tool to edit buoyancy. you can use wooden breakable parts and when parts gets destroyed the ship loses buoyancy and ends up sinking

This is insane how one person can simulate water physics on a cpu based game better than most modern day games can.

He's using an old NVidia library that's doing the simulation, the hard work from his side is actually integrating it with GMod. The reason why pretty much no games use this tech is because it's very expensive and the physics isn't 100% stable. GWater is capped at 100k particles and you can see that it isn't enough to even fill up that small area he walled off, sure, you can increase the limit to 1 mil, but only better hardware can handle those values. So if you wanted to use this in an actual game you would be very limited by the scale of the simulation, because either you'd use small, but realistic particle size and be constrained to only using the sim in very small areas, eg. A single pool, or you'd have to blow up the particle size, which would look bad and you'd still only fill up a small pond at best. It's simply not usable for anything cool

@@nocturne6320 it's usable for small bodies of water, so if your game takes place in an urban environment, you could have bathtubs filled, or crates, or you could have a small pipe puzzle. you definitely *can* work with this.

@@clownintraining5944 In short, it's not worth the performance hit. While FleX, the NVidia library GWater uses is not strictly NVidia cards only, it does rely on CUDA (and probably has a different implementation for AMD), which is not available on AMD cards and that could mean that the physics behaves slightly differently, which can be a big deal for gameplay. Another is that physics cannot have a "quality" slider. With graphics, you can add in expensive stuff like raytracing into your game, because if someones hardware cannot run it, they can just disable it with no impact on the gameplay, this is not possible for physics, if some hardware wasn't powerful enough to run the simulation, then the game might not even be playable on that system (especially a bad scenario for console development). And finally the performance. For what small details you can do with this, it's not worth it. Why have a realistic water sim of a duck pond when you could instead use that performance to render at overall higher quality, or fit more stuff on the screen.

@@ProfessionalTyper For me its more about the huge amount of real time water, there are only two others games that come to mind that do this at some capacity and very little... Trine 2 and Worms Revolution, from 2011 and 2012 respectively (Surely there are more, but i personally only know these two) I remember playing these years ago and thinking how cool future games would be, lol poor kid.. if only games had continued to experiment and BEING GOOD :(

Physx development was started in 2004 and was first implemented in a game in 2005! Still very impressive implementation!

it was actually pretty easy since it was mostly just reused code. The hardest part was getting the server Lua instance from the client (to avoid networking / exploitation unlike gwater1), which did take a bit

1:18 also this gave me a idea for a setting that acts like a little event or something that counts down to a tsunami and spawns like a chunk of water near the player in a way idk it’d be kinda cool edit: or like a flood it would spawn water particles in a area that it would detect that it could fill up a room or something

Could there be a thing as varying particles? For example, when you open the gate to let the water flow out, we can see at first that there is a big portion of water and it slowly becomes shallower as it flows. But you made the particle volume bigger (so it fills more area), but at the moment it prevents water in small portions seem unrealistic. The idea is that, I don't know if it's possible and I am sure you already tought about that, to check the portions of water and determine particle volume/particle size depending on the total area water takes. So if you fill a pool, the particles will be bigger because we only see the body surface. But when somebody jumps into the water or throws an object, it detects the impact and watches the actions of the object and makes particles in those areas smaller so we see the impact, water details, foams, etc.. And the other parts of the pool stay same. Again, I don't know anything about the mechanics of this so sorry if I am being rude or anything. Keep up the great work as always!

Hmm. Seeing that water in the map, I wonder if you could do some interaction with it? Maybe spawn GWater when something splashes in to map water, and despawn GWater particles if they come in to contact with map water? It would be pretty cool if addons could somehow interact with the liquid. I'm not sure if you got multiple types working at once, but I could imagine a Spacebuild-like thing with liquid stored virtually in tanks, but being able to pump it out and having it spawn from leaks, needing to suck it up and stuff? That could be interesting, but there's no networking with the flex side of things, is there?

detecting collision is hard. there is a lot of syncing gpu and cpu data around which can take a really long time (when considering playable framerates). With FleX, its *much* easier to treat it as part of the map geometry I don't imagine this mod being used for anything practical, since it requires a binary module, is fully clientside, and very performance heavy. But I suppose it would be interesting to incorporate it into something. We'll see I suppose

@@Meetric1 Does FleX not have different collision types, like voids? Are you able to assign different collision types to different map geometry? Being client-side does make actual functional multiplayer aspects infeasible, but it would still be cool as optional visual flair. I could imagine a mod like I described using ordinary particles in most cases, but if it detects GWater, using fluid instead. Oh, on that note, can the particles have a lifetime at all? Or would it have to be tracked manually per fluid drop? For auto-cleanup of these visual spills.

1. FleX does support different collision types, but you have to implement them yourself, and getting the data from the GPU nearly halves framerate 2. Functional multiplayer isnt actually that terrible now that im able to sync the client and server lua instances via C++. Swimming and reaction forces use this at the moment, and in theory you could do stuff like "kill player" or "ignite player" 3. I'm thinking of doing a lifetime thing eventually, we'll have to see ig

Are you planning to implement dynamic particle scaling, so if a particle is stationary it becomes big and merges with others and if a particle is moving fast it splits into small particles

I've tried compiling for linux, so far with no success. right now, the issue is that the Nvidia FleX (particle engine im using) libraries are having problems linking to the compiled object. unfortunately I'm not sure why, as they *should be* linked via a premake script I'll keep trying. Worst case, it will be open source during release and someone with more experience may be able to get it to compile

What about water particles that the closer you are to them the smaller they get, and the further away they are the bigger. Like LOD to prevent seeing large blobs of water up close. I guess this wouldn't work in multiplayer.

you should make it so gwater2 could be used in adventure maps. for example the room fills will lava that damages you very quickly on contact.

i have an idea for optimization, what if you make a particle bigger if its connected with more so it gets glued and make smaller particles and more particles when theres more movement or smth like that, does that make sense?

im curious if you could make it so the particles are by default big because in large bodies of water it looks good that way, but when you interact with the water the water particles become smaller

lil question, how difficult it will be to implement something similar to how model LOD's works but with water, distant water will be rendered by bigger blobs and spheres, while closer ones by smaller particles?

in this case, its faster to just render the particles via an existing buffer instead of calculating LODs
