fortifarse all tracks are generic in their own way. You don't need to always be listening to weird progressive rock or random metal. The spirit of pop is a lot to build on what was done before, and people shouldnt be so ashamed of that. Yes originality is good but its not always necessary that there be a lot of it, and there are other qualities music can have. Baby don't lie was the most generic in the sens I think the sounds used, the production, the echo, was very very much used... and I just didn't like it, which is beyond it being generic. this type of sound is not what I prefer but very used today - its like too full all the time, its like you loose some variety, its hard to explain. Id almost say it a sound that sounds self important or something. There was not much depth. But I found some interesting things in spark the fire. The intro, the bridge, some of the verses, some sounds, even the chorus were not bad, actually it was good. The problem of that song was not it had nothing special, but it lacked something. In this song, we can hear gwen stefani like melodic input, so to speak. And the emotion of the melody suits the lyrics very well. Because those emotions are real and expressed in a way that does not sound forced in the song, it does not sound what people would call generic - even if it might not be as original as progressive rock of course.

I used to think the video was ridiculous and low budget, but I grew to see how sad and poignant it actually is. And years later, now that I can REALLY relate to the song and the music video, it hurts even more. You can see and feel so many different emotions crossing her face, and none of it is an act. She moves through waves of despair, anger, raw grief, disbelief, helplessness, pleading, bursting into tears. She is desperate, she is withdrawn, she is distraught, she is resolute. She wants to go towards him, but she also wants to retreat into isolation. She wavers between trying to stay strong and breaking down from the pressure. It's the 5 stages of grief in motion. And it ends with her expression looking reserved, disappointed. It really asks him, "Why???" I relate to each expression she emotes so much, because I understand each feeling. I cried watching this today. But I'm glad Gwen is healing

i love this video. i look nothing like Gwen, but it's like looking at my reflection. i'm going through the repercussions of a breakup now, and sometimes i do that thing Dane Cook was talking about where you just stare at the mirror and cry and look at your facial expressions and think this was what my ex lover used to stare at for hours on end. and you're just staring at yourself hoping he/she will end up beside you but they wont. and sometimes you're able to be strong and pull off a brave face, but sometimes you succumb and feel like you're breaking down. knowing that these are real emotions. breakups feel horrible but at least by sharing her pain she's letting us know that we're not alone.

Facing up to hurt and pain, rejection and loss, is scary stuff, so much so that many of us wall off all or part of our feelings and emotions as a coping mechanism. If your walls are up (and you may not even be aware they are), I very much doubt you'll ever fully "get" either this song and/or the video (hence, all the superficial comments, all the false bravado, more often than not manifest in the form of snide or crass humor). When Gwen sings: "Nobody taught you how to love" (a key line in the song, and not coincidentally, one of two moments in the video where she actually mouths the lyrics), this is in line with the concept of tabula rasa. My own notion is that we are all born with a certain innate capacity to love, but certain experiences, e.g. growing up in a broken home or perhaps failed relationships later in life (in my case, probably a combo of both), can cause us to lose part of that capacity. In my twenties, I had great difficulty committing to relationships and it took me the longest time, a lot of collateral damage at the expense of others, and blessedly, the infinite patience of a truly beautiful soul (that of my soul mate) to realize I had set up all these walls and that I hid behind a mask of stoicism to bury some very deep-seated personal insecurities and a very real fear of failure. The breakthrough began with becoming self-aware, and with that I was able to begin chipping away, bit by bit, at those walls and slowly rediscover (or rather re-learn) the capacity to truly love. I greatly admire Gwen and others like yourself for the openness and willingness to be vulnerable and authentic. Others may scoff at the notion, but to be self-aware, in touch and in-tune with that part of ourselves which makes us truly human (some call this the human psyche, others the soul, whatever the semantics may be) makes us beautiful beyond the superficial. And in Gwen's case, it enables and empowers her to make beautiful art and music. p.s. - I've always thought that this video was conceptual in nature, in that the "mirror" in the footage is the camera -- by extension making us or Gwen, or both ways, the mirror.

Problem was that I loved her too much and didn't love myself enough to think I deserved her, which is why I broke things off and regret it a year later now that she's found someone new. you're right tbh.... if i listened to this whilst watching her rollerblade around with more plastic surgery that kardation like in her latest vid - I wouldn't remember , nor like the song. I relate to this in so many ways.. I just love Gwen. Her music seems to resonate my own life. This song has me crying because she really gets it, or I get her about it. I don’t know why I cry, but I think it’s cause I remember for the first time since I hated you, that I used to love you. Betrayal is the hardest trial to overcome. Love you Gwen and thank you for this song.
