My wife and I took this service from Plymouth up to Paddington as a great way to get to Heathrow at a leisurely pace for a 2pm flight a few years back. Just like Dylan found, this sleeper option was a hidden gem; an oasis of old-fashioned good service in a tacky world. Spotlessly clean, comfortable and ridiculously old-fashioned-romantic. We loved it - and wish we had a reason to do it again :-)

As someone who uses the Night Sleeper frequently between Penzance and London Paddington I though it should also point out that the both Paddington and Penzance both have first class lounges located at each station where you can enjoy a shower and tea/coffee amenities. Both are available included in your sleeper birth ticket* so if you should leave London Paddington (after using their lounge and shower) you are also free to enjoy Penzance's lounge and included shower etc. Note that depending on the number of people travelling and demand for the showers you are required to arrange a time slot. As of this point it can be done by arrangement with your carriage attendants for 'arrivals' although I believed for 'departure' its more first-come first-serve. *First class amenities are only available if you book a sleeper birth. They are not available to passengers travelling in the none sleeper section of the train (past the buffet and lounge car towards the front of the train). Although it should be mentioned that those travelling in this section do enjoy a 1st class "normal/day running" coach without the tea/coffee/biscuit freebies (although if you asked nicely I'm sure you will get some). For the COVID era, while the sleeper service itself may sometimes be running and in other not (please check before any bookings or if you have made bookings and GWR are not the fastest company to tell you they may owe you some money due to cancelled trains), while it is in operation a face mask is required while moving to/from your birth, while any none-sleeper section of the train and while ordering at the bar located in the lounge section (NB that the lounge area itself is not available for seating/consumption of food/beverages during the pandemic for your and others protection). You can remove your mask while in the toilets and your sleeping quarters. Also no showers are available for obvious heath reasons! A quick note about ticket prices... the sleeper birth is always a fixed price based on 2 options: Solo (the only available option during the pandemic) and Shared (cheaper but you will share the room with someone. If not specifically travelling with someone else at the time you made the booking you must be the same sex as the other person. Eg, if you booked a shared birth but are travelling alone and are male then you will be paired with another male, similarly if you are female. OFC you may get lucky and have no pairings at all and get the birth to yourself. It should also be noted that your paired person can get on at any stopping station, so you can be woken up at 3am by someone coming into your room. For this reason I always book Solo). Solo (at the time of writing this) is £80 on top of your ticket, keep in mind that train fairs at that time of night are very cheap so £135 one way is fairly decent and cheaper if the train fair ticket was booked in advance (as an advance ticket, read the rules because these tickets are not flexible!), although I doubt - unless you have a lot travel discounts or selecting a shared birth - you will get a fair PLUS a birth for £90. Anyway, enough wall of text! I highly recommend this service if you get the chance to enjoy. For a train (keep that in mind!) its very comfortable and enjoyable. Happy New Year to all.

I had the pleasure of doing the Cornish Riviera sleeper and the Caledonian sleeper to Inverness back-to-back in March 2019 (before the upgraded Caledonian rolling stock) - the Cornish Riviera was by far the better service and looks like it still is!

Dylan, I have to agree with your comparison between refurbished Mark 3 sleepers and the Mark 5s on the Caledonian Sleeper. The Mark 3 looks cosier and the table is much sturdier. The ladder to the upper berth is quite innovatively designed - pity we didn't have a similar design on our sleepers downunder - although I could see this as part of a renovation thought for future upgrades. Enjoying watching both your videos and those of our Canadian friend (DownieLive). Makes up for being stuck at home during Melbourne's second lockdown due to the second wave of COVID19. Keep them coming and stay safe and well yourself in sunny Inverness.

Lots to say here Dylan: No music - excellent, just the ambient soundtrack. Subtitles were informative and not overdone or gimmicky. A forensic examination of facilities on board Praise for the crew and the company seems well deserved. This looks like the future of travel - CO2 a better option. The drive is awful. (we did the overnight - 24 hours from Tampa Fla to New York - cramped but fun. and the car train from Nice to Calais brilliant, though now no more) Seems sleeper trains are catching on, throughout Europe. Both the Great Western Railway, operating out of London Paddington, and the Great Central Railway, operating out of London Marylebone, had generous loading gauges. The Class 165 and 166 "Thames Turbo" commuter trains built by British Rail for suburban work out of Paddington and Marylebone took advantage of this fact, but their wide bodies mean that they lack "go anywhere" availability. Some careful gauging studies had to be undertaken before Class 166 units were cleared to operate along the former Southern Railway route between Cosham and Brighton to ensure they didn't foul the edges of curved station platforms.

You still can, thanks to Great Western Railway! I travelled down from Paddington to Penzance on a Friday in December and the train (two seated carriages, a lounge car and four sleeping carriages) was far from full. As Dylan Bowes demonstrates, there is an intercommunicating door between adjacent compartments which is ideal if four people are travelling together as a family group.

Wow! I'm really enjoying your videos! I'm getting into Model railroading (I know, not too many ladies into model railroading...hehehe), because I have a passion for passenger trains. I like the fact you don't clutter your videos with a bunch of loud, obnoxious music either! These are relaxing and enjoyable! Thanks! I think you've earned another sub my friend! I look forward to watching more! Question: Did the bottom berth turn into seating during the day? I didn't see you sit there, I was curious. I would think it would though, seems it would make sense. Lovely train! I lived in the U.K. when I was younger in the U.S. Air Force and only got up to Scotland once on the Intercity 125 I believe (I could be wrong, but I just remember that Train well). It was enjoyable, but not nearly as nice as this!

Thanks. The lower berth doesen't turn into a seat but, given the late departure time and early arrival time, this isn't really an issue.

I've taken the chunnel from Heathrow to Paris thats only train I've been on from London when me and my mom went last year on vacation. This looks like an awesome trip. Love your videos man.

That was one of the nicest rooms I've seen! And it's still so much cheaper than Amtrak.
@DylansTravelReports4 жыл бұрын
True but a lot shorter distance than Amtrak as well.

Much shorter trips... my last AMTRAK ride was 47 hours... (Chicago to San Francisco) Had a sleeper...whew!... and of course AMTRAK sleeper carriages have showers!

GWR is like the only decent national railway company serving London lol. Southern and South Western can collide head into each other for all I care 🙃

Yep, definitely UK trains, engines that we’re built 60 odd years ago, cartridges built 50 years ago. And with GWR pricing are making them a lot of money.

Luv trains. Dreamy service to Cornwall. Only complaint ---- train ride too short. Maybe they can go via Hereford then back. Arrive about noon, or 1pm.

mill101 yeah, or they could stop in a spare platform somewhere for a few more hours, reading maybe?

So glad the UK has kept their 2 famous night trains. Look forward to taking them someday. A couple of the ones I took on the continent are gone forever!

It's a shame that sleeper trains were cut but they're making a comeback in post lockdown Europe 😁
