The great Benjamin Luxon died the other day, a musical titan equally skilled in a light song like this one or on the Metropolitan opera stage. The voice is uniquely melifulous and endlessly varied in tone‐colour and phrasing. Thank goodness we have his recordings to remind us of his tremendous vocal gifts...

If Dame Gwyneth was in charge of the fleet Britannia would still rule the waves. One mighty ' Ho Jo To Ho' and the enemy would be vanquished and in submission. Incidentally the words of this song can't be so easy to memorise as I once sang it as a duet with a soprano who noted down her verses on tiny pieces of white paper stuck on the back of an artificial flower she was holding.

Composed by Thomas Arne: When Britain first, at heaven's command, Arose from out the azure main, Arose, arose from out the azure main! This was the charter, The charter of the land, And Guardian Angels sang this strain: Rule, Britannia! Britannia, rule the waves! Britons never, never, never shall be slaves. Rule, Britannia! Britannia, rule the waves! Britons never, never, never shall be slaves. Still more majestic shalt thou rise, More dreadful from each foreign stroke, As the loud blast that tears the skies Serves but to root thy native oak. Rule, Britannia! Britannia, rule the waves! Britons never, never, never shall be slaves. Thee haughty tyrants ne'er shall tame; All their attempts to bend thee down All their attempts to bend thee down Will but arouse, arouse thy generous flame, But work their woe and thy renown. Rule, Britannia! Britannia, rule the waves! Britons never, never, never shall be slaves. The Muses, still with freedom found, Shall to thy happy coasts repair, Shall to thy happy coasts repair. Oh, blest isle! with matchless beauty crowned, And manly hearts to guard the fair. Rule, Britannia! Britannia, rule the waves! Britons never, never, never shall be slaves.
