Lexus GX460 PCV Valve remove and replace

Finally tackling a job that is perceived to be one of the most difficult only to discover it was one of the easiest removal and installation maintenance jobs I've done on the GX460. The PCV valve and ventilation hose ordered from Bell Lexus of Arizona. Receipt is below.

2017 GX460 3rd Owner. 121,847 Miles. Vehicle seems well maintained prior to me overall. PCV Valve had some visual sludge and the ball inside was still moving around, although, no where near as good as the new valve. I use Penzoil Ultra Platinum 5w-30 and I change the oil between 5-8k miles depending on how hard the miles were. PCV Valve was still good to go! I got the part for $10, and this took me about 25 minutes. Great value for the peace of mind! Next is to lube the driveshafts! Thanks GXBOB for another excellent GX maintenance video! Cheers

Hi Gx Bob - I have a GX 460 2012 about 64,800 miles. I keep getting a P2714 error code. We replaced the transmission solenoid and the error code went away. After 6 months, the engine light, 4LO, and trac off display returned with same code. Any ideas how to fix this? Dealer was asking 10k to replace transmission.

@@GXBOB what I mean is getting the lower pieces of foam out of the way so I can access and remove/reinstall the PCV. I really don't care about replacing the foam, believe it's just for sound deadening; I am lifted with 33" all terrain tires, could care less about a little more engine noise.

Well done video! Approximately how many miles do these PCV valves? Have a ‘14 with 91k and the Lexus dealer is recommending the service. Of course they don’t say “why,” whether it’s bad or it’s a mileage based thing...

Roughly 100k is around when you should consider replacing it. Lots of factors on why sludge build up can clog your PCV hence why different trucks clog sooner than others. So typically the average number is 100k to do most of your maintenance that is not prescribed in your Lexus handbook. Same with EGR valve. I had a first generation with 167k miles that never failed me but this newer GX sent a CEL at 80k miles already.

Hey Rusty. So some factors come into play. Do you have an unlimited resource of cash coming out of your cahoot? Are you on a budget? Do you care about offroading or is your truck going to the local liquor store and back only? Does this truck going to accommodate your family or is it just for one person mostly? If it were up to me, i would definitely take the Sport Package with Premium plus and captains chairs. Premium plus gives me power 3rd row seats (convenience factor) and the sound system (a must for long trips). Second row Captain's chairs is definitely worth investing in as it offers convenience and steers away from the minivan feel. Sports trim only because the outdated exterior design needs the extra trim to look and set itself different from other GX's. (Especially the smoked tail lights) If you're able to do a lot of these mods yourself and find them on the aftermarket sites then save yourself a few thousand and just keep the Premium Plus with captain chairs. Skip the sports package. My 2 cents.

She likes the new dash of the 2022 but we’re not dead set on it. Reliability is the #1 priority. So if there’s another year you recommend, we’re open to that also. I’ve been a Toyota fan all my life but she wanted a new Yukon. Well, 2 years later the transmission went out. So she’s finally starting to listen to me hahaha. I’m very mechanically inclined. I do all of my own maintenance. Except rebuilding transmissions lol. Thanks again for your reply and the videos!!!!

@@motomarcel1 I like the new dash also but thats not going to make your Lexus any more reliable than a 2014. Its good that you mentioned you're mechanically inclined because there are so much information and self help videos on the GX nowadays (not when i first started, there was none). Especially the clublexus forums for shared knowledge too. So you have to balance out how much work you want to do with how much money you have to spend because they coincide with each other due to age and.....how much love the previous owner gave their truck before they handed it over to their new owners. For personal choice, i would definitely take the 2008/2009 as my favorite to buy and work on. You'll be lucky if you find one for kelley blue book price. I would skip the second generation 2010-2013 (the front end killed it for me). If you like newer than take the 2016-2019 and switch out the front grille yourself. Reason why i skipped the 2014/2015 is because i never buy the first years of a model change, even if the changes are minimal.

Minh o Minh....electrical is probably one of the most hardest to do since we don't know exactly why your fuse popped. Even if u replaced the fuse, it'll eventually pop again because you didn't find the reason why. Replacing the fuse only puts a band aid on the problem. I would, in my opinion, tap your usb power line into another ignition or accessory source within your car. Perhaps your cigarette lighter....

I would look into your Secondary Air Injection Pump as your culprit. I have a video on preventive maintenance for that but it seems that its too late for you. There are many articles on it and Toyota knows about the issue. I had it happen twice on my GX and the dealership replaced it for free. That’s a tough one because the symptoms of a failing pcv share the same symptoms as other emission related parts issues. Here is a basic list of them. Engine misfires at idle. Increased oil consumption. Hard engine start. Rough engine idle. Possibly black smoke. Oil fouled spark plugs. Easiest one is Presence of engine oil in hose leading to your pcv. Like most maintenance items, it’s just better to get ahead of it before you see the symptoms.

@@willbill2209 I don’t mess with a gimmick that requires an extra stress on my maintenance routine. The amount of oil it catches over the lifetime of the vehicle doesn’t do any more damage than the Toyota engineers designed it to handle. Of course, this is just an opinion. But if you search the forums you’ll also note mixed opinions on the subject matter.

Your instruction made quick work of this. 2015 GX w/ 99k miles, my rpms were bouncing a bit when idling and changing the pcv valve seems to have fixed the issue. Thanks for the helpful videos!

My best guess is the foam is there for noise dampening since other Lexus and Toyotas do not have this foam. All the hoses and parts buried under the foam are rated for heat environment so i wouldn't worry too much about lack of foam. Regardless, whatever you take out, just shove back in. Trust me, the cavity is so snug and compact, the broken pieces of foam will stay put.

Hi Mohammed, I've switched out to passive suspensions on 3 of my GX's in the past because i didn't want to deal with the useless air suspension. I have shown the switch in my past videos on my 2008 GX470. Its super easy to do and very inexpensive. 2 coils and 2 shocks kit. The ride is so much better after i made the switch.

The foam on the PCV hoses and valve are used as insulation to prevent any moisture from freezing since condensation will sometimes develop.

@@GXBOB My 14 GX460 Lux has 94,500 miles, the only repair I have done was the courtesy lights door switch replacement. Very useful video indeed, I plan on cleaning my EGR valve and replacing the PCV valve at 100K miles. Thanks Bob for all of the helpful videos you have put on KZbin.

i received quite a few data on ClubLexus forums. Moderator Acrad provided the spec for the PCV. At the same time, remember the threads are plastic. Don't want to go crazy on the torque wrench either.
