My pet peeve is this distain and miss labeling of “gym bros”. I think there is a movement of people that hate on them for being loud, egotistical, rude, take up space, give unwanted advice, constantly filming obnoxious things, etc. I would actually argue that that isnt a gym bro, that might just be an asshole or a rude person. To me a true gym bro is passionate about what they do, helpful when asked for advice, supportive to the regular community at their gym, welcomes new people in their space, are attentive to their environment, and just in general a good person at the gym. When I see a sort of loud group of “gym bros” I see a group of people getting really hyped about what they love. We are always told to keep that child like energy. even adults are told dont ever loose that or ask why do people loose it. Then when we see someone get really hyped about their passion we label them as doing something wrong. Contrary to allowing kids and supporting them to get really excited about something they love and expressing it. Be a gym bro just dont be an asshole. Lift heavy be kind i guess 😂😂. Love what you do man!

My biggest annoycan is people who “superset” or “circuit train” during peak times at the gym. The gym I train at is fairly small and during peak it gets busy. This one guy was using a squat rack to do pull ups, a bench and 3 sets of dumbbells (on the other side of the gym) 1 of the only 2 bench presses in the whole gym and the back extension machine. Eventually the staff had a word and told him he couldn’t rise 5 plus pieces of equipment at one time during peak, as it wasn’t fair on other patrons. Luckily he seemingly found a new gym soon after

My biggest "gym pet peeve" is that I workout of a commercial gym... thankfully I'm there when things are relatively empty, but when I used to train in the evening, things would be quite busy, and sometimes all 4 squat racks would be taken.... But sometimes it'd be taken by someone deadlifting in front of the rack.... So I'd simply ask if they didn't mind move a touch back to the plenty of open floor space behind so I could squat, and they'd say "no, I'm using it".... which, clearly they're not, they're just deadlifting in front of the squat rack with the bar/weights on the ground... and I'm not talking about those multi purposed plywood setups in combo with a rack, I'm just talking about empty floor space and a rack (which clearly they weren't using the rack).

I could tell them relative to other people in their population it’s good but even then what’s the utility? Especially beyond the parameters of a true competitive setting. I’m very much in the same line of thinking as you- we should only be worried about maxing out our personal potential. If that happens to mean you’re stronger than others similar to you, great. If not, who cares you’re probably happier with yourself having worked hard for an accomplishment.

My biggest peeve is people not being safe when safety should be #1 when lifting heavy. So many gym fails are due to inadequate spotter, safety bar height, ego lifting, etc. Chest press for example, safety bars used correctly, an adequate spotter, dumbbells, another chest machine of some kind; if one isn't available go to the next one. There is no excuse for injuries and near death scenarios that are all too common due to the lack of safety. I get people don't have all of these safety measures available to them but you'll find a lot of awkward situations can be avoided by just dropping the weight a bit and learning how to bail correctly. This comment isn't a cure all.

The interesting thing about BMI is it kind of still works if you're thinking about your heart's ability to supply the body with blood relative to your size. Obviously it can't cover variables like aerobic health and genetic predispositions but if you think about purely what the average man's heart size is with the average amount of cardiovascular health you may be able to get a good picture of how you're doing and what you need. More or less, if your BMI seems high but you don't feel like a fatty it might be a good idea to maintain decent aerobic fitness so your heart doesn't become laboured by your inactivity. Some people are, after all, muscular and some just have large frames. Your heart isn't just bigger and more capable just because you've got wide shoulders and a big ass even though you feel like you look good. A scrawny person of equal height can be considerable smaller and their heart may take more abuse from their laziness

You touched on all things I consider as pet peeves of the gym/strength sports. As someone who has been battling obesity most of my life (I am around the 33% body fat with a 40 BMI) I do have some muscle from the last 23 years of strongman and powerlifting. Some of the powerlifting idles were those who were really big pushing insane weights with equipment. However, raw lifters like Ed Cohen or more recent ones like Efferding and even Dan Green look fantastic and are strong as fuck. The one thing that is missing from the list (I am 40 and have been lifting since I was 15) is the lack of lifting knowledge. When I started KZbin wasn't even a thing yet and I remember going to local meets and watching strongman on tv and being in awe of the raw power people have. I wanted that. I had a subscription to Power magazine and tried my best to get strong. Unfortunately, being a big kid I gravitated to bigger/fatter lifters.

"Comparison is the thief of joy" I've been working out 10 months and my coach has been working out 10 years. All I'll get from comparing myself to her is misery because she's been lifting so much longer than I have, but I will absolutely look at where I am today and where I started from and be proud of the improvement I've made.

Throwing dumbells away after dumbell bench press
@rimantasandriukaitis27303 ай бұрын
I have solved that problem. Just tell the person to use lighter weights since he cannot handle the heavier ones. And do it loudly so everyone around can hear. Works like a glove. Haven't seen some of those people around the gym since that day. Big win.
@drae69843 ай бұрын
I'd rather (gently) throw the dumbbells on the (softened) ground while noone is standing next to me instead of risking injury. I have no strength left after doing a set to failure. Setting up for a set with 50kg+ dumbbells is already difficult in itself, but returning them with no strength left is just kinda too risky for me. I'll risk annoying some people if it means I won't injure myself lol

A big pet peeve of mine is people putting baby plates on the leg press or hack squat machine racks so that you have to remove 10kg, 5kg and even 2.5kg plates to get to the 20kg plates that one should be using. The small plates are racked in another area of the gym around the squat racks. Whenever I see them on the leg press or hack squat machine racks I throw them all over the floor.

For a little while there was a guy at my gym who would jump rope in the walk way between machines as a super set I guess. I literally turned my head while in my own space and felt the wind from the jump rope whip by my face. I was pretty pissed. If you want to jump rope go outside or find open space don’t squeeze up next to people and put them at risk of being hit in the face because you didn’t respect their personal space. Whipping somebody in the face with a jump rope is a great way to start a fight if that’s your goal, but it’s a terrible inside activity if there isn’t enough space and you aren’t looking for problems from strangers.

My pet peeve is powerlifting based when people are working in on a bench say. If there's 3-4 people on same bench, and it's your turn and you still have to set up your camera/wrist wraps/chalk, and do your 40 second preparation then it slows the groove down so much You need to be able to go fast, and be proactive in who's going next etc

To be fair to the folk asking if their lift is good/bad - most strength sports (including Strongman) is about comparing your lifts to other people's lifts, so it's kind of understandable.

Great video, in powerlifting the excuses for missing lifts are unbelievable. The answer 95% of the time is poor programming or lack of strength but it's always "misgroove" or some other nonsense
@ragingmoderate67913 ай бұрын
The only time I ask about my progress I always add in the parameters. "Is my progress okay? I started 20 months ago my max deadlift was 265. Now it is 395, is that decent progress? Do I need to change anything with my program." It's never to guage myself against others just looking for someone else's opinion on whether or not my program is working to a good standard.
