Many people don't realize what a game changer her floor routine was. She was the first to do a full in and end with a double back on a floor WITHOUT springs. She was also the first gymnast to use a double back dismount on beam. On top of being a powerful tumbler, she was a gorgeous dancer. Such a tragedy she broke her neck and lived the rest of life pretty much in isolation. RIP, Elena, your contributions to gymnastics will never be forgotten👼

Sharon C And Unfortunately Dangerous...A lot of her moves are now banned...the Thomas Salto that broke her neck, gymnasts are Not allowed to stand on the high bar anymore, etc. Victim of the Soviet Medal machine. She was undoubtedly one of the greatest gymnasts of all time, I find it so sad that no one has ever made a movie about her life , think about the sports stars who have had movies about their careers, IE Eddie Edwards and Steve Prefontaine and nobody has thought about her story ??, For me it's definitely the saddest story in sport , tells you that we all need someone there to look after us when things are hard , sadly Elena losing her parents so young she had nobody to protect her during that sad time in 1979-1980 when she was pushed to do things she wasn't ready for after her broken leg . I agree, the saddest gymnastic story ever. She didn’t deserve to be pushed when she knew her leg wasn’t healed. She knew she could break her neck doing the Thomas Salto and voiced that to her coach. Nobody listened to her and that’s exactly what happened. Very very heartbreaking ❤️‍🩹

I watched her in the 1977 Prague European Championship and in Oviedo and it is amazing how much she improved her performance mainly in the balance beam. I think she looked relaxer and happier back in 1977 i didn't see Klimenko at all during those events only Tourischeva was with her. She was so good and I am really sad she didn't attend to Moscow she really deserved an Olympic Medal .

That floor exercise should have earned her a 10. When I think of the way 10s we’re just handed out a few years later I am a bit miffed that she was never awarded one. She landed the full in double perfectly, in addition to a double back to dismount. She muscled those tumbling passes, the floor and the vault weren’t springy like they are now. She interpreted her music beautifully, today’s gymnasts lack this. There’s such a drastic difference between the previous world champion, Ludmilla Tourischeva and Elena Mukhina. So much changed in those four years.

Actually, Nadia Comăneci got the perfect 10 score in the 1976 Olympics in Montreal which is 2 years before this performance. Nadia had impeccable technique. It is a sad tragedy what happened to Elena - so young and so much pressure to perform dangerous gymnastic moves and routines.

In my opinion this performance was the high watermark of artistic gymnastics. The perfect combination of artistry, athleticism, grace and skill. Apart from a slightly shaky vault it was a flawless performance and beautiful to watch also. prince extortion Yeah, like Say What has commented - she died of complications of being quadriplegic. Sadly, her quadriplegia was caused by snapping her neck in 1979, during training. Despite her status as one of the best gymnasts of all time, her coach put her under a stupid amount of pressure, to add the 'Thomas Salzo' move to her routine. It is a very dangerous move, which is now banned. At the time, few female gymnasts could achieve it - and Elena herself complained to her coach, how much danger she was in. Regardless, the Soviet sports authorities continued to pressure the hell out of her. And then sadly, the inevitable happened during training (whilst practising the move). She broke her neck, and became permanently paralysed.

I always felt that she deserved a ten for the floor exercise in the all around. She won a silver in the balance beam final behind Nadia that should have been gold, her ballet training really shows. Can’t watch this without being sad. She was ahead of her time. It would be years before some of the standards she set would be passed up. People were doing double tucks off beam for decades after this. That’s how hard it was. It was a perfectly acceptable dismount for generations. I miss truly artistic gymnastics. Elena was so strong, but still had beautiful lines, every move and every pose was deliberate. Truly one of the greats, and one of the greatest tragedies.

I remember in an interview Elena mentioned one of her favorite gymnasts was Olga Korbut and I can see it the more I watch her. Not just because her bar routine but her overall grace and the way she carries herself on the floor. It’s beautiful. I noticed she even has the same floor music as Olga did during her Olympic routine. Watching them both perform gives me so much joy & goosebumps lol

Rest in peace beautiful Lena you were and still are one of the best gymnasts the world has ever seen and you're sorely missed. I hope now your free and able again and are somersaulting over the clouds and flipping down the rainbows with the gentile grace you showed in life. This was a tragedy that should never of happened at all and I do think had she not broken her leg and then been made to train whilst very much recovering still as well as doing a move that really only men can get the sheer height to be able to complete it she would of come first in most if not all the events she took part in. These girls truly were gymnasts of a different class to todays who have every advantage with the new rules and user friendly equipment! Today they have lost the art of movement they are muscular so don;t have the smooth flow of a ballerina that girls of this era had and that is quite sad really.

I completely agree with what you have written so eloquently about Elena. Especially about her exquisite flow of movement, so rare and precious. I don't see this quality in gymnasts of today and indeed in gymnasts of any era. She was unique. May she be resting in peace.

It's very sad I think something was wrong since her broken leg I mean it's normal in this sport to have injures but a broken leg in training and later the broken neck I think she was under so much pressure poor girl.

Audre Chan she was injured while practicing a dangerous element she was pressured to do called the Thomas salto and underrotated it. Maybe her leg had something to do with it but muchina herself stated she knew the move was dangerous and that injury was inevitable and felt that she would break her neck doing this move.

Leading she's not telling stories Do you think the Soviet s were just let a major world champion who was able to challenge Nadia get up and leave? They were still sour about Nadia's victory . Who could say no to trainers or secret police? The KGB could make very unpleasant for her if they wanted and she only had her grandmother. I am sure this poor girl would have quit if she could. Her face in photos seems to say u no longer want ti be in sport

It was the Soviet Union. Her trainer was part of the hyper masculine system that put country above young girls’ health and demanded Olympic medals above all else to prove that the USSR was better than Democratic countries. I’m not saying the US is perfect because we got Nassar after all. This sort of evil exists everywhere.

She has not good results because of her health’s problems. It was bad for Soviet send to participate girl with problems, because they have a lot of another athletes with better results

She said later in interviews she couldn’t wait to lay down and read a book...poor thing what she had to give up...communism killed her...forcing her to train on a broken leg. Olympics Soviets won without her in 1980...HOW sad is that? She was a wise woman but as a gal had no one to protect her... She almost always looked tired and worn out. RIP Elena, I won’t forget you
