In Sydney, Australia the local equivalent of the United States' "Hell's Angels" motor cycle cult are called "Bikies". Last week one of their groups acquired a new member.
His name was "Bimbo" Stanley Simmonds. He went through the initiations involved in becoming a member of the "Gypsy Jokers" and joined the gang in mass "zooms" out of Sydney on their high-speed motor bikes.
"Bimbo" painted his new bike -- his first -- in the cult colours and his friends said that he was proud of his new allegiance.
A few days after initiation "Bimbo's" bike came to a sudden halt on the highway -- but an articulated truck behind him did not stop. "Bimbo" was crushed and the "Gypsy Jokers" went into mourning.
A crowd of sad "bikies" from several groups around Sydney attended "Bimbo's" funeral service and burial at the Liverpool cemetery on Monday (21 April 1975).
"Bimbo" was buried in the traditional "bikie" way. His friends rode in formation behind the hearse carrying his body from the church to the cemetery. There the "Gypsy Jokers'" leaders drank from a wine flagon after "clinking" earrings in a ritual salute to their departed member.
The flagon was buried with "Bimbo" to provide sustenance (after the style of Egyptian kings) for his long journey through eternity.
Then the "Gypsy Jokers" left for a night-long wake at a secret location -- closely followed by police motor-cyclists, concerned lest their grief should disturb the general tranquillity of Sydney suburbia.
