Soloing Over A Gypsy Jazz Blues Progression
I got a question about how to solo over a gypsy jazz blues progression and here's some pointers which you'll find useful.
To clarify a 'Gypsy Jazz' blues is slightly different from a 'Jazz Blues' and a 'Blues Blues'
It's important to understand this difference before you start soloing over the progression.
Django Reinhardt composed and played tunes like 'Blues Clair' & 'Swing De Paris' which follow this progression.
Like soloing over any progression it's first vital to understand the chord changes and memorise them. These will be going along in your head as you create your solos.
Gypsy Jazz Blues
1. The first chord in a gypsy jazz blues is C major unlike in a jazz blues when it's C7.
2. The basic 12 bar progression
C/// F7/// C/// Gm7/C7/
F7/// F7/// C/// C/E/Eb/
Dm7/// G7/// C/// Dm7/G7/
Soloing Over Gypsy Jazz Blues
1. Think C major for C
2. Then think C minor for F7
3. Have a good lick for the 2-5-1 (Dm7-G7-C)
Have fun and take it slow & easy!
cheers,
Robin

To paraphrase: "Think tonic minor for the IV7 chord. Great tip! Same tip applies to first chord of Limehouse Blues... think Gm for the C7

Man, you've got it all, like Elvis! Great way to get started, like a lot of players, I hate to admit that I'm stuck in the I-IV-V progression, it's true you can spend a lifetime there, and there's so many great riffs, but there's something to be said for learning something else too.

Thanks Robin , nice tip about thinking as the 2nd chord (F7) as a Cmin . Never thought about it that way and already having tried different inversions of cmin have found some fresh new voicings!

One of the greatest things of your lessons is that you make think. I was wondering, how come C minor is a substitute for F. At first I couldn't see the logic. Then I played the F scale and bang! Got it. It contains Bb and Eb. Now I got the why. It sounded good but I have to understand the gist of it. So now I know why, in C and the F, the 4rth chord I can use Cm. Great lesson, enormous gratitude Robin. Abe Cherem

ok but it would help if you would explain why the C minor works. There is a pretty easy explanation. C minor has a Eb, so does FMaj. Maybe it's just me, but I love knowing. Even so, a nice video.

Yes exactly the keynote is the Eb which is the minor 3rd of Cm and the 7th of F7. Check some of the more recent vids for simple theory explanations. I’m here to help cheers!

@@GypsyJazzSecrets at 1:38 you do a I to V turnaround that is amazing, I am a little confused by the exact chords and timing. I think this little segment may be something conceptually important :) I have been following you for awhile and I really enjoy the lessons and your positive attitude. I cannot thank you enough!
