Since turning pro in 2019 Regan Duffy has been a revelation in the Australian Motocross scene. He won the MXD series in his first year and after missing 2020 due to the pandemic he stepped up to the 450 class in only his second season as a pro. He was in the title for all of 2021 until the series was called off. Regans dream run as a professional took a terrible turn in October 2021 though with a second turn crash at his local state title race at Bunburry. Regan died twice in the helicopter on the way to the hospital and spent a month in hospital in critical condition. Less than 6 months later, and against all odd, Regan is back on a full sized bike and training for his return to racing!

Riding on your toes has been around since the 70's. Bob Hannha always talked about. David Bailey always rode that way in the 80's. Because that's how Gary Bailey taught him and everyone else to ride. Great videos by Gary Bailey right here on You Tube. One in particular with him try to get Sebastian Tortelli, to ride on his toes. I know footage of early motocross racing isn't that easy to find. But it's definitely worth your time to find it. You'll be surprised how many techniques that were used way back then, by the top riders , that people today are claiming to be new.

Right, nobody developed technique until you were 14 years old, but none of you guys can ride a 2-stroke that took more technique to go fast on than a lazy-boy thumper, (that first extended careers of the slightly less technically talented near the end of their careers.). The sport will not grow. You are delusional. The FIM can't fill a MXGP gate now, (will probably go to a 20 rider gate soon to "fix the problem"), and we now have about 43-48 racers trying to qualify for the heat races of 40 riders. Just watch the entry list son,--you are seeing delusion. James never had a problem making a main event, and you are not qualified to speak for him. Your not even qualified to speak for your self. You live in delusion of self grandeur that can't make a main event. It is your choice. My tip is, "figure out reality", instead of trying to make it up. That way, you will have a means of correcting yourself when you find you were wrong about something. Reality has a way of kicking our butts when we ignore it or try to make it up, and basically, that is the foundational reason why you are not making main events IMO. Wish you the best though. Keep thinking. Doug in Michigan.

In 2010 I went to MTF and from then on I started using that technique, "Elbows up, balls of your feet." Then I started to watch and see if the pros were doing it and that's when I realized that James always had his feet turned outward, getting squirrelly in the whoops. I would always point this out to my friends but I didn't think anyone knew or cared enough to agree that this was the reason he would go down so much. But if you watch Villipoto, his toes are always pointed in. I really liked his style on 450s, cuz he was so stable. I'm glad ya'll brought this up. Also, I was never a guy to burn through clutches either. Even on a 2-stroke. Cuz if the bike is coming out from under me, then why would I wanna raise the RPMs? Just get off the throttle. And if I was bogging I would just downshift or dump the clutch. I don't understand what these kids are doing nowadays. Great podcast.

i never raced at a serious level but i was taught to ride on my toes/ball of my feet, toes inward so your knees naturally squeeze more, head forward over the bars. @@nolanbennett6617 I think this is how guys like Lechien and JMB got so good. At least later in their careers, they did not hardly cross train, (and Lechien did not ride much near his end, and would still win on his good days, like the 1988 MXofN on the CR500, after partying with local chicks in his hotel room. It's almost hero stuff to me, lol). When they got tired, they figured they were riding wrong, and adjusted their riding so they would not get tired. I think they actually got ultra smooth, using very little energy,---by figuring out how to ride while "out of shape", so to speak. That means that they did ride a lot more than listening to guys like rob beams also.

I grew up racing motocross heavily at Dade City. 1984-1988 (pre-teen), then again 1996-2000 in my early 20’s The owner Randy Yoho had a riding school there. These techniques, riding on the toes, knees back, flat back, head over the bars, no clutch… they all come from that riding school. I’m not sure I’ve seen or heard of any formal training before that which entailed all the modern elements. This is the track where Ricky and James cut their teeth. I think Randy was essentially taking Gary Bailey’s techniques and tweaking them based on how the bikes and tracks were evolving. It’s cool to look back and know that i got to be there for some of MX’s important historical eras.

Then the modern bikes, (since the 4-stroke height) probably fit you well. Me at 5'9", I had to remove 1" off the 2019 YZ250 2-stroke seat, (they got as tall as the 4-strokes, which is the direction of dysfunction.), and .75" off the suspension so I could touch the ground well. I am a little heavier today than 20 years ago, so I knew I would need stiffer suspension springs for aggressive sand whooped out trail riding, but that bike was the worst set up bike out of the box that I ever owned, (out of 8 of them). That is the reason why this vid starts out, "It's an advantage for bigger riders today." Well, it might be an advantage to me also, thanks to what is left of the free market, if I start a company that shortens suspension for the masses. Corner speed will improve, and a berm, usually on the outside of the corner, will not be mandatory anymore. :)

@@ML-mq7zq What???!!??? Dirt bikes are sized. They have been getting that way since the 70's, with the introduction of the mini bikes,---to racing classes from 50cc to 500cc bikes, (about 6 or 7 different sizes from youth to adult), and they use different size frames too. But the sizes today cover this. If you are 2.5ft tall to 5"4" tall, you are covered for mini bikes. If you are 5'4" to 5'11" tall, every adult bike is too big for you today, (if you can't touch the ground with both toes. Poor Alex Martin.). If you are 5'11" to 6'2", the bikes may be a good fit. Many taller guys got a taller seat, and that was a few guys. But there is not an adult bike today that fits anybody under 5'11" properly. That is a lot of people. More than half of the adults. For those who say, "You get used to it", I say,---we should not get used to dysfunction.

We have always been taught and practiced riding on the ball of your feet as much as possible, only coming down for shifting and braking, (But I have seen a old pic of Magoo on a rear drum brake Maico, stomping on the brake pedal with about 4" of pedal travel with the arch of his foot as if he were standing on a foot peg, as he was setting up for a corner.). If you want to feel the real importance of the balls of your feet on the pegs, go do some challenging trail riding where a tree root can suck your foot, toes first, around the front and under your foot peg. That hurts like hell, even if you don't break your foot. That can happen anytime your pegs are close to the ground, especially if the overhanging hanging toes are pointing to the ground, (which you may not realize, sitting or standing, on the arches of your feet.)

Road racing uses the same balls of your feet on the pegs Big fast 130+ mph sweepers your squeezing the tank with your knees your pushing your foot into the peg. It makes the contact patch on the tire grip more feel it through the pegs. I used to take my KX 500 there's lot of gravel roads around here. Standing on the pegs get the bike sliding around corners. You want to sit on the seat stick your leg out to the low side. I don't know how many times the front end was washing out around a corner. I'd dynamite my low side foot in the dirt hand full throttle.. instead of seeing a white flash before your head hits the dirt. You save it. On to the next corner. Next level shit if you want be fast. Motocross is a crap shoot. Rutted doubles you hit a million times the next pass rear hits the rut wrong turns into a kicker ass end swapping your casing the bike instead landing on the back side.getting slammed White Flash. Waking up Wholly shit there 30 mF coming threw here get the fuck off the.track. But that's why we do it.

A crab claw boot like that will probably protect my foot if I am on my arches, if my toes catch something on the ground, (rock, bump, berm lip, tree root, etc.) and suck my flipper under my peg, (ouch---a lot. Even if not broken.). But I use more of an Adventure boot that has the protection of the 80's best MX boots, so I can feel the bike, so I will keep the balls of my feet on the pegs as much as possible. I want to feel the bike, not pain. :) I have the TCX Baja boot, (very light too compared to my FOX Comps), and will not be doing big landings. Best feeling/most comfortable boot I ever owned by far. Over all, I hope to experience less pain. It is so nice to be able to feel the bike again, for the most control of it. :)

I have just tried bush riding like jett / sexton / ryan hughes teachings and wow had no soreness, but my old style consists off sitting up on the tank drifting in and out of every flat corner I can find ( low geared 250f pinging) and I see that style used effectively when needed with anderson when he big dicks eli. But james got me riding so I just copied his throttle but 250f villopoto is one of the best ever for style also

Being short doesn't have many advantages that's for sure. Big guys rule all major sports now even in positions where the guys used to be small. I can't believe it took this long for big guys to start dominating in moto. I don't know why people are talking all about riding on your "toes" right now. It was long known that you should ride on the balls of your feet. It's not new. What am I missing?

Nah bro chase sexton crashes every race Also being bigger means more weight The strength aspect helps but I disagree This is racing not basketball, being over six feet is just extra weight and movement you have to execute. Plus sexton, mookie, and tomac are 5'9 to 5'11 which is not a 'big guy' this is average size Big guys over 6 feet are at a disadvantage in this sport

I use to burn a clutch out every two weeks on my CR85 107cc modified and CR85expert(1" taller wheels) modified 112cc. I use to burn a clutch out every week on my CR125cc and 3 weeks on my CR250. I raced James on 85cc a few times when he was on Team Green and he definitely used the clutch. You did not run an 85cc or 125cc 2 stroke and be that fast without the clutch, sorry but thats not happening.

why the fuck do they make the rear brake levers so long? it's not like you need the leverage. they sell a brake lever tip that will bring it back but it didn't fit my ride. i ended up drilling holes in my lever to mount the tip back almost 2 inches. i hate having to switch my foot to hit the brake. fucking stupid

I’m 6”2 and came from a DH background to MX, my initial impression was the bikes are just too short to stand up properly at my height. Fine you can raise the bars, lower the pegs by a couple of mm, but it barely helps. Imagine riding a size medium DH bike flat out when you need an XL - it’s just so far off.
