a million years ago (1976) I did a clinic with world 125 champ, Gaston Rahier... at the start of the day, we lined up on the start, our engines off and he briefed us with... "we do all our first laps today whilst standing up on the pegs... no one is allowed to sit down on their seat..not ever...if you sit down, you go home"... So we all wobbled and hacked around until we got the hang of it, kinda, sort of. Then we all watched as he did it for a demo...wow..unreal!!!...flat chat thru every corner, no matter how tight, standing all the way.... he gripped the tank with his knees and was smooth and solid, working the power band on his 2 stroke all the way thru the gears. A world champ knows a thing or 2. That and quite a few other things were gold that day.

Good points. I remember flagging a Canadian national mx race many years ago. Ross Pederson (40x National Champion), picked this inside line in practise. He would pivot, hug this tight inside line. No one else would consider it, rail the outside. Ross stuck to that inside line complete race, formed a rut after 5-10 laps. Near the end of the first moto, top 10 guys were all following his tight lines. Ross won both Moto.

I watched this video when it came out. Buddy of mine recently did a class of yours. We spoke about the technique. I raced a hare scramble this past weekend. As I allowed faster riders to go around, I would sometimes catch them in corners. I’m talking… I’m a D rider. Catching A riders (for a moment) after a few corners while they were sitting down-I was standing. I think it’s more tiring, but I felt faster than sitting. Props to this technique. And times when I got off line,off balance, I could correct it so quick. I was able to absorb corner bumps with ease! Really turned me into a corner monster. I mostly ride single track so it’s more natural for me to be on my feet. Slow corners I just counterweighted more. Which allows me to hold that line or pick the bike up with more throttle and quickly take a wider line or give less throttle and do a tighter line.

@Aj Catanzaro I just watched back the bit where you ask “Why do we put our inside foot out” and I don't think there was a clear answer as to why we would need to put that foot out. Can you clear that up? I'm genuinely interested to know. Anticipation of sliding out? Clearance to allow the bike more lean angle?
@JP-ec9rl3 жыл бұрын
I've been riding since I was 4 years old in 1980. I've never been a 'foot down' rider. A dirt bike hooks up better and has a lower center of gravity when you take your ass off of the seat and plant your weight on the pegs, down low on the chassis. Also, we didn't really have suspension in the good ole days so we used our knees as suspension. Probably why mine are shot! I used to ride fairly aggressively and without much gear and "knock on wood" never broke a bone. I'm getting too old to push stupid jumps these days but still love both dirt and mountain roads! Keep this great sport going! Teach your kids the joy of motorcycles and they will never have money for drugs!

I always thought that putting your foot out on the inside of a corner was to keep your feet from dragging and getting ripped off the pegs in deep ruts or soft terrain like sand and mud. Otherwise, keep your feet on the pegs. Is that a valid reason? Or is it better to just keep your feet on the pegs anyway and let them drag with the pegs? Great video, I have been riding most of my life, but never really worked on cornering and it's a big weakness I'm trying to fix.

It has a lot to do with the turn but any turn with camber or deep ruts youre going to want to keep your foot out to maintain a balance point of your lean and gets your foot out of the way of dragging when your peg dips as you lean.. love the content, but aldon baker has trained all the top guys and they all ride with their foot beside the front fender on your sharp turns. For a quick turn that doesn't require much lean probably best to stay on but if you're tipping the bike you definitely want that foot up all your weight on the rear tire and leaned over is asking for a loop out. Ive always been taught stand when braking for the turn sit as youre entering, upper body locked lower body forward and inside foot at the front fender you listen to this guy and try and rail a sharp turn with your feet on the pegs i guarantee you will break your foot if you don't high side first.

Guys don’t take this tip.. if you watch his pro video he puts his foot down in every corner. It’s because of the track conditions. Which should show you that it’s completely situational and you’ll literally know when you can keep your feet on. If you don’t already know then you probably can’t even balance on a bike and shouldn’t be riding anyways. The only time you should leave your feet on the pegs is if you’re going outside on a very wide turn. Other than that it’ll always be faster to drop a gear before the turn and then grab a gear on the way out while squaring up. Standing up is meant to give the bike a lot more range of motion but when you’re turning , your energy all goes one way anyways so it’s literally pointless in most occasions lmao.

I think you have some good points and it is kind of weird how many mistakes "top pro's" make. Anyway, I also think it depends on what type of corner, how tight, what kind of track conditions, turn has a burm or not, etc. Suggestion, space out your students more. What I see happening is a lot of your students focusing on the rider in front of them, because they are too close, which is preventing them from proper form. They should be standing up way before getting to the turn... too many of them are sitting (and sitting in the wrong position). I enjoy your videos. Thanks.
@AjCatanzaro3 жыл бұрын
Spacing at this track was extremely difficult because there was mud off the side of the track everywhere so we were really limited on where we could cut the track. The specific corner shown in this video was the worst and everyone was almost on top of each other. Thanks!!

One thing I'd notice when I ride was how weighting my feet could control the bike. I'd even mess with it on straights, weighting one foot, then the other, and it'd surprise me how weighting my feet could relieve my arms of some of the work. I rarely hear anyone talk about that, other than weighting an outside foot in a corner or using your feet on the pegs to help pull acceleration force off your arms. I was always curious whether top pro's used weighting their feet more everywhere on the track for other reasons? Maybe nuance adjustments of the bike setting up for a rut?

Hey AJ, can you elaborate more on why/how the front leg out does not help the front tire bite. Whats confusing to me about that is for ever I worked on this technique, finally have it half way down and am finding that it makes a big difference in confidence and front end stability. I was always taught that when the leg starts to move away from the axle/tire area it works like an anchor, pulling the bike in that direction. Also wondering, if feet remain on pegs through corners, should I be in neutral position on the seat, or try and get butt up near tank, head over bars? Thanks for the vids!
@AjCatanzaro3 жыл бұрын
Your butt moving forward on seat is what would weight the front tire for bite. Your foot isn’t going to make any significant weight difference, just going to be at risk of dabbing the ground. I don’t have an issue with foot up, but very few riders have I ever seen do it the proper way. I do notice that when I keep both feet on the pegs that I can sit slightly more neutral on seat. (Still closer for front though).

on a dirt track it's maybe best not to put your foot out ( I don't know, I have never riden on it ), but when you look at supermoto drifts, they all do it, so I guess it depends on how much traction the bike has on the type of terrain. If you know you're about to drift, maybe it's best to put the foot out to help you balance and keep on sliding and to be prepared when the front looses traction and washes out...
