Stankdog and Jase talk about the upcoming revolution in dirtbikes as we move away from the modern 2-stroke and 4-strokes dirtbikes and into the electric era!
//
Gared Steinke races f*cking dirtbikes... 2-Stroke dirt bikes to be exact. He is a cult figure in motocross and one of the most universally loved guys on two wheels. I have always wanted to have Gared on the podcast and I am pumped we were able to make it happen. If you don't want to rip a 125 after listening to this podcast we can't be friends.

Batteries and energy density are the limiting factor. In a pro National...top riders are using up about a full tank. 1.7 gallons = 200,000 Btu. But a race engine is only about 33-35% efficient in a BTU to mechanical output basis....probably 30% by the time transmission and chain drag is taken into account. So in mechanical output capability, you are looking at 60,000 BTU output work capacity for a tank of gas. Converting that to KJ (the more commonly used metric energy/work unit) gives 63,300 KiloJoules of mechanical power output potential in a gas tank. A gallon of gas weighs 6.3#, so 1.7 gallons = 10.7# = 4.85 KG Lets assume the energy source carrying structure - the tank - would be equal to the housing of a battery, and just compare the energy density of the fuel sources. So now you can figure the energy density of your fossil fuel "energy source"...the fuel in your tank. 63,300 KJ vs 4.85 KG mass = 13,051 KJ (Mechanical Output) per KG of fuel. This compares closely to that published here: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Energy_density Remember that I took efficiency into account. The Wiki page is showing theoretical chemical energy potential from gasoline combustion. So 13,051 / .3 = 43,505 in chemical potential energy. But then divide by 3.6 to convert KJ to Watt*hour and you have 12,084....vs 12,888 claimed by Wikipedia. So my numbers are in the range of correctness. Always double check to make sure an answer roughly makes sense. So, what is the state of the art in battery energy density? www.cei.washington.edu/education/science-of-solar/battery-technology/ The highest energy density claimed today is 265 Wh/kg. 1 Wh (Watt*hour) - 3.6 KJ. So you are looking at a state of the art energy density of 954 KJ per KG! Even with 100% electrical to mechanical efficiency to get the same amount of energy needed to ride a pro-national at pro race pace you are going to need a power unit (battery) that weighs 63,300 KJ / (954 KJ/KG) = 66 KG, or 145 pounds. The way I see it we need a MASSIVE MASSIVE revolution in electrical energy storage to make EMX bikes really work for competitive riding. Yes the electrical motor will weight less than an IC motor, but not 130# less.....

I think alot of the hate towards electric dirt bikes comes from the assumption that they're going to replace petrol dirt bikes. to me they seem like a great secondary bike that you can ride around your backyard without pissing off everyone within a 1km radius. I'm a rider and racer and I don't care for the noise. So hyped for an e-dirtbike once battery range is sorted. If I can ride an enduro on one charge at race pace, count me in. I have 1.5 acres in a somewhat crowded area. I'm backed up to woods. Right now, nobody minds but nobody would even know if I were on an e-dirtbike. Just to add... E-bikes are probably technically safer except for the battery. Failures might be more rare than an ICE engine but might be more dangerous for the rider if it's a battery failure. Also, electric motors with transmissions are available. Maybe it turns out that most or even all riders won't want a transmission, but I bet most people will want a mechanical clutch. There's a reason Electric Motion and GasGas put mechanical clutches on their electric trials bikes.

The last part about how tech could be further applied in MX like what has happened in Motogp. The novelty of this is attractive at first, the idea of being able to do new things but do you really want the outcome of a race decided by which teams trailer of 30 computer programmers has done the best job of tailoring the electronics to a track? We have the current world champion and Suzuki spending this year trying to get the adjustable rear suspension working correctly and being uncompetitive. The most advanced F1 cars ran in the early 90s they had traction control, ABS and active suspension like motogp today. Seriously all hale the FW14b, what they did with that car and its tech, was crazy, especially for the time. But as a fan any step further in the direction of setup and machinery rendering a world class rider uncompetitive is IMO a wrong move. A side effect of this is drastically raising cost for the teams because once one makes this step the others have to in order to compete. All of the addition people equipment etc.. is very, very expensive and MX is not the most healthy these days.
@ericcarney5028
@ericcarney5028 2 жыл бұрын
Agreed.... technology like this keeps the Williams team from ever competing against a Merc in F1 and forget about any other teams entering F1 due to cost. If MX Privateers can’t afford to compete with the factory teams now... this kind of tech would completely destroy the privateer & ruin MX completely.

There is a difference between the current range of electric kids minibikes vs the Alta and other electric production bikes. There are a handful of second hand Alta bikes in Australia but it is worth understanding why Alta didn't work and why manafacturers aren't supporting the concept. Alta had the best chance and when they went under they were absorbed by Harley/BRP which binned it. The Harley Livewire was developed before Alta acquisition. Very unfortunate as they were ahead of their time with a great production design and business model. What it did show was the inability to launch a new brand into the marketplace.

So many people hate electric, but when their loud old unreliable bikes are getting smoked by silent electric bikes that never need to be rebuilt, everything will change. I have only 2-stokes now, but can't wait for electric to take over.

From the competition perspective instead of trying to kill off 4 strokes like they did 2 strokes, ebikes should get their own class. Guarantee the audience/viewership will be remain focused on the ICE bikes

What about the KTM Freeride E-XC? Anyone riding those? I’ve ridden the Sur Ron and it’s damn fun. More like a mountain bike/moto type thing.

I know the Freeride has a 40 mile range and the thing weighs as much an DRZ400! I own a tricked out Sur Ron=money pit. Offroad mountain trail riding=15-18 miles. LAME.

They will loose some fans, but i believe electric will grow the sport bigger than it’s ever been. Electric bikes give a sense of safety to them and more people are more likely to give dirt bikes a try. Combine that with them being easier to ride having no clutch or gears to operate. I’ve seen kids ride faster when they get on electric. The noise can scare them and give them a sense they are going too fast.

I think everyone is missing the point that going dirtbike camping will no longer be a thing as you would need multiple generators humming through the night etc. Bikes are already too fast so they are faster(more difficult) and if you run out of battery in the middle of the bush your kind of fucked, your buddy can't just bring you a tin full fuel to fill up no, you have to stay there for hours to get a little charge in those batteries

It’ll happen. Energy density will get there. Add AI and electronically tuned suspension….. perfect settings for every part of the track. It’ll be better faster cheaper eventually. Won’t be long, just talk to your bike and adjust on the fly….

Regardless of weather electric is faster or not, I will always no matter what use petrol. If motocross goes electric very few people will turn up to watch and the sport will die out quickly. So yes it might be the latest tech, take a lot of work and time to make it work. but that doesn't mean it helps the sport so personally I'll steer well clear of the electric stuff cause it's just not my thing.

E-Motorcycles are a killer for the industry as a whole. It will take time for the transition to go full circle for the bad that will happen first to compensate the change later on. Sales drives racing, and that stands very true on the parts side. Take a moment to think of all the gas powered motor components that will slowly disappear. Don’t get us wrong there is still gear, tires, and chassis tuning but the average Powersports dealer is in trouble in CA.

Motocross and supercross fans are too hardcore to switch over. No premix? No 4 stroke thunder? No thanks. But, there is a simple solution. I am not going to lie. I work in the automotive industry and recently drove a Tesla P90. The torque was effing insane. I couldn't imagine having 100% of torque applied to 0 rpm's. Instant torque. I think it would change SUPERCROSS forever. Motocross. The motors don't even last a full moto. Then take too long to charge to race the 2nd. Yeah sure if you can afford an extra motor that costs thousands of dollars. (25,000 for a tesla) I am very curious to see how this goes.

Harley didnt buy alta but they had a deal to help develop the livewire but they dropped the deal. I think it was part of what killed alta. I think they were leveraged and the HD deal would have saved them sadly.

As much as I hate to say it I think electric dirt bikes will be the future. Obviously the old school 2-smoker and the new 4 strokes are sweet but think how nice electric bikes would be for riding regulations. More tracks because of less noise complaints and so on. No oil changes is a plus too.

Problem is: 1. Sound. We like to hear the sound and what is going on with the bike 2. Weight 3. Distance. Outside of supercross or MX track it could be a problem. Many of us ride on track and trails/desert. 4. Fans like sound as part of the experience (see 1). This is why no one shows up to Formula E races while Formula 1 and Indycar get so many fans. It just isn’t that exciting to not hear anything. At some point it is gonna happen, I just hope it isn’t any time soon

It kills me when people blast something they've never experienced or used themselves. In this case e dirtbikes. Also many can't imagine having fun riding a dirtbike if they can't hear the engine. Ridiculous, go check out some of AJ Catanzaros videos. So I guess none of you folks ride mountain bikes?

Electric bikes are a great idea for certain people and places they ride...I really hope it doesn't end up electric bikes for everyone especially in racing...and the fact ur saying someone with a computer can control the how a bike is ridden on the track is a recipe to get more people hurt in the sport...these guys grow up riding...they know how to ride the bikes ...dont let computers get involved in their ability...it will end bad for the riders and the sport
