Two major things happened during the MX sport in the USA, and both drastically increased bike prices, because they were both intrusions on the free market of MX. 1) The 1986 production rule, only in the USA. The FIM (only in Europe at the time, but was always the boss of the AMA), was sick of USA winning the MXofN since 1981, so they got Yamaha to drop their works bikes in 1985, (again, only for the USA, Not Europe), and Yamaha was the leverage to have the production rule put in place,---for the USA only. A 1984 YZ250 costs about $1,400, (already had 12" of wheel travel with up-side down forks breaking out, exhaust power valves, water cooling, disk brakes, single shock linkage rear suspension, and my 2019 YZ250 is about the same with a aluminum frame.), and a 1988 CR250 costs $3,200 new. The price doubled in 2 years, because of the production rule. 2) The 4-strokes were not a free market idea, but an idea pushed on the industry, through the FIM/AMA, by environmental groups and government groups, (far from free market), and the price doubled again. Yamaha was the first to race one with Doug Henry on the pegs in 1997. Both times, Yamaha was at the tip of the spear, and I find it ironic that Yamaha is the only Japanese manufacture still making a 125 and 250cc 2-stroke. Wanna bet the cost of a new YZ250 2-stroke is really $6,500, ($7,500 is what they sell for), and for every YZ 250 sold, $1,000 of that profit goes into their 4-stroke program? One thing is for sure. Because of the FIM, the market share has shrunk to 1/10th of the bikes sold in the USA compared to the sales before the 1986 production rule. The FIM/AMA need some good free market competition with objective reasoning, ---or this sport dies eventually.
@alanjm12342 жыл бұрын
The YZs first came out with USD forks in 1989. I had one. Jacky Martens won the MX world championship on a 4 stroke Husqvarna in 1993, which was the first win for a four stroke since Jeff Smith won in 1965.

I started riding my first time last year at 38 on a 2011 KTM XCW. Had never ridden a bike in my life; didn't understand power band, sucked at clutching. Put a few hours on the bike and pretty much immediately went and broke my tibia and fibula hitting a rock and got a nice metal rod and screw in the leg (sep 2020). Poster boy of what NOT to do. Been riding past few weeks just taking it slow; messing with powerband springs and figuring out what I like and don't like and learning to clutch. I've ridden a friends 4 stroke since the accident, but I'm gonna stick to the 2 stroke and learn to ride properly. Yes I'm an idiot - was my 4th bone break, so wasn't anything new. I have a built YZ 125 making 42 hp on VP C12. To say they have less power would be talking stock power out of the box. With the built engine in the light weight 125 i have a far better power to weight ratio than even a 450. I can take them on holeshots even and have several times racing open class. The best part is 2 laps in the four stroke guys are getting arm pump and tired while im still just flicking the light weight machine. I usually get a good start with it and then stick with the leaders for a few laps and by the last laps when they are tired i put the pressure on forcing their mistakes. Two strokes are easy winners if you build them right and learn how to ride them correctly.

Barley any mechanic visits needed, cheaper to maintain, and quite fun. You can have your stock seat lowered about 1". I had "JB Sport Trim", (Nicole Guild in Gowen Michigan, 616-994-4767), cut mine and put the stock cover back on. I made a cardboard template, (flush to the bottom of the seat, showing what I wanted cut off at the top), so she could see what I wanted cut, and she did a perfect job for $80.00. I gave here $100.00. That is the least you will pay, to have any part lowered on your bike, and them most for the money by far. If you have the suspension lowered a bit, (I went 6% of my travel on both ends too), do not send your suspension to PR2 in PA. I have to redo my shock myself, because they did not know a simple calculation for the spacer thiskness in the shock.

I am not a dirt bike rider, never had the occasion. But in 1994 I bought a Yamaha RD350R (the last version of the legend). I still own and enjoy her. 2 stroke for life: on road or off road...it doesn't matter. They are the most fun.

Had kx65,kx85,rm125, than i had a yz450...yes it was an awesome bike and alot of fun to ride, but i couldnt stand the engine braking, the heavy weight, the fact that i simply couldnt rebuild the engine.. so sold it! Now i got a yz250 and man, thats just so much fun to ride...sounds and smells awesome, and with a few pro circuit parts its just simply as fast as a 450 in my opinion! Right now i rebuild it to a reverse restyle Version.. old 2002 plastics and airbox, it looks sick and pretty oldschool for a '19 bike. :)

CC to CC, the 2 strokes still make slightly more power than the new 4 strokes. The 250 2 strokes make just shy of 10 HP more than the new 250 4 strokes on average. But if you're talking 250 2 stroke vs 450 4 stroke, the new 450s blow the 250 2 strokes out of the water, especially low in the rev range. They used to be competitive, but now the 450s make easily 10-15 more HP than a 250 2 stroke.

2 strokes are way better for trail because they don't run as hot as a 4 stroke. that's all i do is trail and 2 strokes are by far the way to go, even thou the wr 450 is a narlly trail bike 2 strokes are still better.

@@barakbertoch6690 i agree. In your opinion, would a TI 150 be a decent bike for a 6ft 230lb man who doesn’t care about log hopping, hill climbing or rock climbing? I just ride average south Texas trails
@barakbertoch66903 жыл бұрын
@@BigDaveTALKS given the fact that the TI 150 was made for tackling trails, it is all around a good bike and I personally love huskys. so I wouldn't say no but in my own mind more power more fun but also more difficult, but if all your doing is the easier end of trail riding, then a 150 will be the smarter thing to invest in.

You shouldn't engine brake a 2t anyways, the top end gets lubed by the oil in the fuel. When you engine brake it is only getting the amount of fuel it would get at idle, but it is still spinning at 3k+ rpms and not getting the oil it needs. It wears out the top end faster when you engine brake.
@callummacleod19213 жыл бұрын
@@cadencramer2747 Sorry mate, i have to disagree with you there. The oil also pools in the crankcase and continues to do its job at zero throttle. While prolonged periods of engine braking can be a problem, ie long hill decents, I personally have never had a problem over 20+ years of riding and racing 2T's.
@cadencramer27473 жыл бұрын
@@callummacleod1921 Yeah I was mostly thinking long descents. The trails around me are pretty much up or down, not much flat ground, so I usually just pull in the clutch and freewheel down the mountain.
