Gyro Manchester Zone Circuit /High Peak District

An anti-clockwise circuit on a glorious autumn day around the boundary of the Manchester Manchester CTR, across the moors of the High Peak District then tracking the M62 south of Rochdale and Bolton, remaining north west of Barton then down the LLC to return to Ashcroft.

Nice flight Stu. I came across the Peak District on Friday routed Rufforth->Halfpenny Green->Rufforth and love it up there, the scenery and the colours of the landscape are amazing as is the prevalence of quarrying and the huge scars it leaves. We're so blessed to live in this area and to have cooperative and friendly ATC. Looking forward to more videos - I'm going to start filming some of my flights this year too :-)

The colours are especially beautiful in autumn Jason, when the purples and oranges predominate. Did you pass over the Derwent reservoirs on your trip?

@@StuWithAView Absolutely, the colours are sensational. Southwest bound passed abeam Carsington Water and Darley Moor. Northeastbound abeam Alton Towers and Carlton Moor then onto Chatsworth and Hathersage I could see the Derwent reservoirs to my left before over High Bradfield and the Ewden valley routing NE back to York.

The Peak District is quite unique; rather bleak but beautiful in its own way.

@@StuWithAView the only common thing in all gyro videos is the air rushing past us, and the gorgeous view of whatever is under us. For me there is never a boring moment in the gyro's cockpit. Keep those videos coming and have fun filming them... :)

Stu, I also fly a MT-03 (from Kirkbride, Cumbria) and, like many others, greatly enjoy your videos. My question is this: I have noticed that when you take off from Ashcroft your altimeter is set at 140' but when you have landed away, and then take off again, it is set at 0. Why is this? NOT a criticism - just a curiosity query!

Hi Nutty. I trained at Kirkbride; fantastic place. Say hi to Chris 😊. And wow, you are paying attention! I set QNH on take off as I’m into busy airspace immediately, just below the LLC and Liverpool and Manchester zones; when landing I set estimated QFE (QNH - 5 mbar) once in the circuit.

@@aviatorsteve5649 Hi Steve, if you're travelling cross country then the norm should be to set local QNH or the regional pressure setting prior to takeoff and ideally before first contact with ATC.

@@StuWithAView I will pass on your best to CJ when I am next at KB and, yes, it is a fab place to learn at and fly from. OF course your explanation makes complete sense once pointed out. I always contact 'Scottish' en route and get my QNH then(that's how I was taught at Carlisle when training on an Ikarus C42!) but perhaps I'll try your way next time I am away somewhere.
