Gyrocopter Liverpool Waterfront

A flight from 30 December 2019 on a perfect winter's day across the Dee estuary to enter the Liverpool zone at the Wallasey VOR before proceeding to orbit over the magnificent Liverpool waterfront. Special thanks to the superb Liverpool ATC who are always professional and accommodating, even to slow gyrocopters flying through their final approach path on very busy days.

At home now sheltering in place due to Covid19 issues. Another month to go. When I need to get outside I take my BMW K1300GT motorcycle for a ride on the empty country roads. Quite cold here and I would normally not ride at 35 degrees F. Times being what they are we take the challenge and layer up, put the heated grips on high and the saddle too. I love riding the country roads relaxed and in no hurry. As it is still winter there are few smells and things are brown and gray. Still the freedom and unity with my machine makes up some for that aesthetic shortfall. I love watching you fly. Wish I could achieve that God’s eye view. You make it possible and I thank you for that. I feel Ashcroft field is like a home away from home, beautiful and green now. Another 3 weeks and it will be so here in Minnesota. Can’t wait. You’ve made my time sitting in the house much more interesting. Thank you. And, you be safe in these challenging times.

Bruce, born in Liverpool but lived in Minneapolis from 1980 to 2009, then moved to Atlanta area due to my job moving down there. Miss Minnesota very much. Used to drive an MG Midget around the bluffs along the Mississippi frequently during the warmer months, and would use my Honda in the winter because I needed that fix to recharge my batteries just like you. Stu, another wonderful video. I grew up in south Liverpool near the Liverpool Cricket Ground so it was terrific to see the city and the whole region positively glowing in that beautiful light. Have heard so many good things about LPL ATC being so accommodating - this video demonstrates that very clearly. Kudos to them. Liverpool looks lovely from the air Stu, and yes ATC were fantastic for you as they have been for me when I used to fly from Barton. So missing not being able to fly at the moment so this has been great, especially love the sound the rotors make and really miss that! When did you last fly? I managed to go to Wickenby in formation with another Sport 2017 a few days before lockdown so feel blessed that I made the most of that flight. I'm hoping you have more content in the pipeline. Hope you and your family keep safe!

4 March was last flight for me Jason; over Liverpool again to fly over the top of the Prince of Wales aircraft carrier 😊 Then gyro was out of action awaiting some post service extra work which completed the week before this all kicked off. I was going to fly on Sunday 22, day before lockdown, until I realised it was Mother’s Day and I had duties elsewhere 🙈 Oh yes; plenty of videos in the pipeline - more than 20 awaiting editing time. But work is crazy busy right now so I have even less time than usual. Stay safe and let’s hope we’re back in the skies soon.

I think I’m going to go nuts if I spend much more time earth-bound. Our airport and flying club are both closed due to the lock-down. Your videos are always a welcome fix when I cannot get airborne myself.

New camera - GoPro Max. It shoots in 360 and allows me to make a 1080p video from that 360 footage, so I can choose two view points and pan between them.

Stu, you seem to have great comms. Do you use the panel mounted radio or a handheld? I have a Flycom helmet, upgraded by them to a top spec but still have awful comms in the gyro. The squealing and howling once I hit the PTT is unbearable. All radio settings have been adjusted. Any tips that I could try?

I use my panel mounted ATR833. I experimented with an underbody aerial but switched back to the nose mount as it seemed to pick up less interference being further from the engine. I’ve got two matched Flycom helmets; I tried mixing and matching brands but it definitely works better now I have two the same. Finally I made my own audio splitter so I can record a direct feed from the radio/intercom. Gyro comms are notoriously tricky and I’ve had my issues in the past; but things have settled down now and I can’t put my finger on precisely why. Sorry that’s not much help!

Question: If the crosswind is from the left, why do you line up on the left? If the autogiro is directionally stable, lining up on the left will result in less runway being available for correction.
