In this video we go through 3 prototypes of a gyroscopic Linear Propulsion device and testing.
Sorry for the shoddy video, we didn't have a dedicated cameraman on hand when this was shot.

I once thought this sort of thing might work but I realised gyroscopes produce torques not linear forces.

In my opinion, it's the gimbal. A gyroscopes function is defined by it's gimbal. In this case you have tethered the torque vector, so no external work will be done. It is confined within the structure. What you're looking for lies in the shift in the torque vector, like the oars on a boat. Hit me up I'm there!

it seems to be moving like a swing set does, it moves with the movement of the distribution of weight. linear is difficult

I suppose you could do the same without gyro spinning as a control run to see if there is propulsion with gyros spinning and without.

Do you run the gyros like drone motors? Two going clockwise diagonal from each other and two going counter-clockwise also diagonal from each other.

I like what you are doing. You can get some levitation, but your gyros are facing the wrong directions and you have to have some oppose others. Keep trying. Good luck.

Add a position controller to the arms. On the forward stroke program the position controller to max out acceleration to swing the arms back hard. On the back stroke use a bit of calculus to return to the home position with the least change in acceleration (an S-curve). In essence you'll be paddling through the air. You can play with the position, velocity, acceleration, and jerk curves until you get movement in the desired direction. Look up "How to reduce jerk in linear motion systems" for visuals on what I'm speaking about.

@@FalconSpace It's not me you're after but the right components. A lot of the giants in the automation industry sell position controllers and servos. I see you've already done something similar to what I'm talking about with prototype 4. You can hear the motors amp up and move quickly on the forward stroke, and return nice and smooth on the back. Just think, in outer space you could have three gyros at right angles to each other to rotate your ship to whatever orientation you want. Then your two gyro arms just paddle you along in the direction you want to go. Heck even on earth this could be desirable as a means to move a boat through a habitat with protected species. No propellers or water jets to disturb them.

Great demo of the gyroscope propulsion device, i have exactly the same "Super Precision Gyroscopes set with the Gimbals Kit". What I found when experimenting with gyroscope behaviour was with old server hard drive I had disassembled. Then I would rebuild them with extra drive platters added to the drive giving more weight. So when the drive is powered on and you hold the drive in your hand you immediately fight against the forces. You can hold the drive in such a way in your hand that you can manipulate to some extend but you would need to tightened your grip due to the forces fighting against your hand and you start to feel an uplifting force upwards when you turn your entire wrist near or close to 180 degrees.. I'll need to make a video to show my findings..

Have you drawn a free body diagram...? How is this supposed to hover..? By oscillating the two opposing sides fast? Even if that can get it to hover momentarily this will not be fast, unless there is some insane power draw and very heavy flywheels

Not sure what your trying to achieve, we have gyros on satellites already, they can adjust the height and keep the satellite pointed in the right direction, and just need desaturating every now and again.

You're working with too many axes at the same time so that one's precession causes a ripple effect of 90-degree angle reactions in the other gyros. And this is not propulsion, but a simple reaction wheel as used by a satellite for momentum control. Work with two gyros-only for propulsion both combined in a single rotational axis. -Help from Honeywell Space...

unfortunately guys the forward momentum your creating is the same force you experience on a swing set. i think the answer might be in the type of material used and frequency. cheers

I can help design. I know the exact mechanics on how to achieve a linear thrust through space. Gyroscopic forces alone do nothing. They are however used as a tool. When joined with others forces, then vertical acceleration away from gravity is possible. I need assistance or I could assist you. Better yet we can assist each other. I have tried with what I have and I believe I have successfully demonstrated all forces simultaneously. I will attempt a link to this in the next comment in case of spam filters.

almost looks like what I would imagine trying to learn how to balance and ride a unicycle in a bathtub instead of open flat area to allow for more room to get used to the process and then use that to control in a tighter area or something. Are the gyros needing to be so small or could you maybe use larger slower moving ones (larger a disc the less RPM needed to have the same circumference distance will pass a given point, is my thought.) also kinda wondering if larger but lighter material would still work as well because of the volume having its own effect over purely mass based directional control.
