WWII USAF Gyroscope Spin Up and Turntable Test

We spin up Ed Thelen's Sperry C-5 military-grade direction indicator gyro. Design is from 1949 and it still works wonders. We also repair and demonstrate the self-leveling feature. Finally, we mount it on a high precision Ideal Aerosmith gyro turntable for testing.
[2024 edit] This video is dedicated to the fond memory of Ed Thelen. Ed left us peacefully on Sept. 14, 2024, having kept his contagious laugh, humor, and insatiable curiosity for engineering until the ripe age of 93. His engineering legacy still lives in his encyclopedic web sites about the Nike missiles ( ed-thelen.org ) and his IBM 1401 restoration website ( ibm-1401.info ). Always generous, he even donated the gyro to the channel after this video! May he rest in peace in restorer's, engineer's, humorist's and good-all-around-people’s paradise.
