Science fiction short story originally published in The Strand Magazine (November 1898) - and later in Twelve Stories and a Dream (1903), Tales of the Unexpected (1924), Weird Tales magazine (November 1925) and many other collections and anthologies.
The story's main characters are a pair of casual paranormal researchers who are experimenting with the idea of astral projection.
One night, one of them inadvertently succeeds in projecting his spirit from his body, which is then taken possession of by a malevolent entity in his absence.
His partner receives a vivid sensation of him calling out for help and rushes to his residence, only to find him absent and the place in shambles.
The researcher continues to search for his partner and learns that he has perpetrated a series of violent incidents around London. He seeks the aid of a medium, who channels his partner's spirit and finds that he has fallen down a well and subsequently been abandoned by the possessing entity.
They locate the well and rescue him, after which he recounts the story of his possession.

I appreciate the upload and the effort of the speaker. I am suprised though, that while recording, they didn't tell the speaker, he shouldn't have (almost) every sentence sound the same, with a lifting up of the voice at the end of the sentence. Wow, it gets really redunant, to an obnoxious degree. I am sorry for my negativity, but felt it needed to be stated.

Same here. I realize the story is about fantastical events, but he doesn't have to read as if he's astounded by every sentence. It grated terribly on my nerves.

It's a fair point. The ancient art of story telling has been homed over millennia, and the points you make are very valid. Despite that fact, KZbin is full of people reading who do not apply these important aspects, like sentence delivery variation. I sometimes despair at popular channels which received 50,000 views and more per story, in which I cannot bare to listen to because they follow the same inflection, over and over again. With all respect intended, if anyone is considering joining the ranks of online readers, please - please, consider the importance of respecting your listeners ear (and hope for relaxation) by not essentially committing adding to mediocrity and ear torture. :)

Hmm... interesting. The reader is obviously scholarly, of excellent verbosity, and of course obviously has a dignified British accent. The man, in short, both has and displays intellect. This is something displeasing to many in this comments section. Can the obvious be stated any more clearly than by their own comments? As I remarked: hmm... interesting.

Verbosity? Is that really what you meant; using an excess of words? The reader only has the choice to read the words provided, so it is hardly being verbose.

@@TheBlackDogChronicles Verbosity, or verbiage, is not necessarily in all cases carrying a negative connotation. It can be a positive interpretation, as in the context of my statement, complimenting the seeming excess of words as something pleasant and in appreciation of. The commoner's perception of verbosity as always a negative is of course, all too common. That's why it's called common, plain, without merit, lacking in substance, or in other words just ordinary and unspectacular. What poet, linguist, or connoisseur of language would count verbosity as a negative? What expert, what artist, what superior palate of language??? Pish posh.
