Back in grad school some of my friends/professors did stuff with sounding rockets. Mainly to study the auroras. And one of my friends hung out at Wallops for like a month or two at one point. Cool stuff. I was busy x-raying lightning at the time, so no rockets for me.

On the topic of sounding rockets: IIRC, they were (originally) measuring the extent (and properties, probably) of the atmosphere, not space. The name stuck with it even as function evolved.

My friend and I have had the exact same idea for a podcast that came about the exact same way! Brady totally beat us to the punch. We both have been avid podcast listeners and wanted to start out own podcast. Every time we get together we pitch new ideas that sometimes are actually good but sometimes are way too much work (sort of The Worst Idea Of All Time-esque) then a few months back we came to the conclusion: what if we made a podcast about our quest to find the perfect idea for what our podcast should be about. We even made a couple unreleased episodes. Haha can't believe someone else had the same idea.

You have to think about NASA and Apollo like the Lewis and Clark. SpaceX is building the "covered wagons" to send the settlers west. We live in a solar system of unexplored wonder that without private space we will simply never be able to get out and explore.

I think the reason why I like SpaceX so much is because even though right now all they're doing is making space cheaper, the cheaper space gets the more cool things we can do in space, and that is what I'm really excited about.

Here is something I've just thought about the inevitable mining of asteroids: Say that you are mining, for example, copper. Say that in 50 years we have depleted our copper reserves on earth by 95%, and that copper prices have gone up by 8x as a conservative estimate, most likely more. You begin mining an asteroid that you know will boost our copper reserves by 5% (so that will bring it up to 10% of 2067 reserves of copper compared to today) you build the equipment and resources required, you start mining, you extract the first extraterrestrial copper ore. Now. What is going to be more expensive, the copper ore on earth, or the extraterrestrial copper ore? Of course, the extraterrestrial ore will be much more expensive at first. Not only has it got the title of "the first batch of ore mined from an asteroid ever in human history", it also will be much more expensive because of the sheerly huge expected costs to make the equipment to send to the asteroid, set it up, mine the asteroid using electricity (most likely using generators, not sure solar panels would be strong enough but who knows in 50 years) and then sending the ore back safely. These cause a huge increase in the cost of the ore at first, but obviously there is an extra supply of copper, so companies buy the ore. This temporary increased price of copper ore will drive up the price of items that require copper, say wiring for computers, etc., making their prices extortionately high for consumers and companies. Of course, in the long run, it should get cheaper, especially since its the rule of "If theres one, there's many", the companies will expand to even more asteroids, and will find cheaper ways to deal with the logistics of sending extraterrestrial ores back to Earth, which should lower the costs. Plus there is also the depletion of earth ores which should increase extraterrestrial ore sales, simply because there is a more abundant supply and the earth ores will be ridiculously expensive. Just had the thought about it, will be interesting to see how things go in the future.

Wait... this is the eclispe episode? I thought youtube was half a year behind...
@lwardrop24537 жыл бұрын
I have been pondering this, the excitement about this year's solar eclipse may have been due to the great, uninterrupted distance it travelled over, considering that it travelled over a track where political conflicts or boundaries would not interrupt the flight of the measuring equipment.
@Shardok427 жыл бұрын
The "Great American Eclipse" was referred to as the eclipse of the century because it is only visible to one country, which would be nothing if not for the shear size of the country it travels across. This is one of the big 5 countries after all it was going across. Totality was only visible in salty water or along a few thousand miles of land all in a single country. That is why they referred to it as the eclipse of the century for that one metric alone because of course if we can find a metric to define it as such we will.

Four years to change a bell is ridiculous. I don't have strong feelings about Big Ben itself one way or another, but from a logistics perspective, that length of time seems completely excessive for the breadth of the operation. But hey...what if they fly the old bell into space, and then it can become a part of both UK history AND space history?

This is a somewhat grim thought, but do you think an astronaut's organs would be also be worth more on the black market, because it had been in space? You were talking about mundane items suddenly being worth thousands or tens of thousands of dollars because they went into space. I mean, consider the appeal that your new heart had been to the moon.

About the "banana republic" episode being flagged my guess would be it's about the title itself. I don't how it sounds in English but in French, "république bananière" is used to defined under-developed countries in a pretty rude way, racist even from the PoV of some. I myself raised an eyebrow reading it, but again I get no idea how it turns to sound in English.

I had a problem with a video, from a reasonably large channel. They had clips from movies, I think it was a top ten list. My issue was they showed a clip from a rated R film where someone was shot in the head and there was blood splatter on the wall behind them, and you saw the bullet hole in their head when it was made. I reported the video several times over a few months, but the video is still there, unchanged, it doesn't even require you to log in to see it. Even to this day it is the best example I have seen of the system failing us. How many kids could watch that video, how many advertisements have shown on a bloody video like that. Or am I just a prude and graphic murder is no longer considered offensive. Well, I was eating at the time and it made me feel sick. They accuse clean videos of filth, and they let filth just sit there, forever.

I am becoming more and more of the opinion that "copyright" should literally mean that you cant copy and paste anything from any source if you are not the copyright holder. However, a picture from a video is acceptable if you are criticizing it, but actual video footage, no. If you went to a movie theater with a camera and said "no copyright infringement intended, I am just going to upload it to KZbin and talk about it." Would anyone let that happen? You don't own the footage, keep your hands off.

I think the main numberfile didn't get hit because there are more people watching, and likely the algorithm takes into account, out of the total amount of views, how many dislikes/flags there are. So maybe since there are less views on your second channel, the ratio of flags to total of people who didn't complain is different? Idk, I'm not a math person :p

It's possible that the KZbin manual review process is broken. But honestly I think it is more likely that this is just another step in KZbin's transition to exclusively favoring content from large corporations over individuals and small producers. I suspect they are trying to avoid admitting that their advertisers don't want to spend money on all these thinky videos, they really only want to advertise on the latest Taylor Swift video. I think this is just going to keep getting worse.
